Volume 17, Issue 4 Winter From the Director s Desk V ermilion County financial institutions, businesses and public libraries are already planning activities for Money Smart Week 2013 to be held April 20 through 27. Last year s events covered a variety of financial-related issues, from gardening to investing, and from college scholarships to planning for the later years of life. If you re a regular library user, you ve already realized the tremendous financial benefit you and your family have by using the library s collection of books, magazines, DVDs, music CDs, recorded books, the Internet, meeting rooms and more for free. But you probably have discovered many other money-saving tips in other areas of your life. From January 3 through March 30, we ll have forms in the library for you to share your most successful cost-saving measures that you take every day to get through these tough financial times. We ll compile the tips and unveil them during Money Smart Week. It s another way the library can help you find new ideas that may make life easier for you and your family. Be watching for a Money Smart Week calendar of events at the library and Vermilion County locations so you won t miss out on discovering ways you and your children can save money and spend it wisely! Nolan, Library Director Intercultural Exchange on the Silk Roads of Afro-Eurasia series Travel On the Road to Samarkand Mar. 4 In 1974, a great army of 8,000 individually-crafted terra cotta sculptures was uncovered near Changan, China, guarding the nearby tomb of the first emperor of a united China, Qin Shi Huangdi (221 BCE). On Monday, March 4, Dr. John Flattery will take you on a journey On the Road to Samarkand for the fourth in an annual series of programs relating to the Silk Roads. The free program will be held in the first floor What s Inside Meeting Room of the Library beginning at 6:30 p.m. You ll meet Qin Shi Huangdi; follow the Chinese armies of conquest as they traveled westward; visit the secret tombs of Indo-Europeans in the oases of Xinjiang; and meet the Loulan Beauty, the mummified corpse of a woman with striking Caucasian features and wellpreserved blonde hair. Dr. Flattery has lived in the Republic of China, traveled five times to Mainland China, traced the Silk Road from Kashgar to the border of Iran, and followed Zhang Qian s route from Xi an (or Changan), China, west to the Fergana Valley in Central Asia. He is an educator, Canon of Smyrna, and a Colonel (ret.) in the Air Force. 2 Library programs keep kids and teens engaged The Children s Department will be offering programs every day of Winter Break from December 26 through January 2. Kids can learn about Hanukkah and Kwanzaa; play Wii games for exercise and fun; read books; make crafts and, on Saturdays, they can sign up to read to a therapy dog. Call the Children s Department ( ) for details so you don t miss out! The Teen Space on the second floor will offer board games, Kinect games, supervised Internet access, and books during its regular hours: Mondays - 2:30-4:30 PM Tuesdays AM Wednesdays - 3:30-5:30 PM Thursdays - 2:30-4:30 PM. Attention 5th Graders! If you want to learn more about computers, digital cameras, scanners, and wireless keyboards, contribute to our blog, and more, join Project Next Generation! Funding for this grant project was awarded from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Secretary of State/ Illinois State Library under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). Monday Matinee travels to China Jan. 21 On Monday, January 21, at 2 PM, the Danville Public Library Outreach Department s free Monday Matinee monthly series will present The Painted Veil, the 2006 film based on the novel of the same name by W. Somerset Maugham and filmed in China. Refreshments will be available at 1:30 PM. The film begins at 2:00 PM. 3 January, February programs celebrate African-American music & history On Monday, February 4, from 7 to 9 PM, the Library will explore Blues and Gospel music as part of a film/discussion series titled America s Music: A Film History of Our Popular Music from Blues to Bluegrass to Broadway, presented by Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, IL. Our library is one of six public libraries in East Central Illinois chosen to host programming as part of the series which explores six uniquely American genres of music: blues and gospel, Broadway, jazz, bluegrass and country, rock n roll, and Latino and hip hop. The Blues and Gospel program will include film clips from Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues: Episode 1, Feel Like Going Home and Say Amen, Somebody. Dr. Michael Loudon of EIU will introduce the films and lead the discussion. In addition, a short performance of blues music is planned. The program is free and all are welcome! The program was made possible by Eastern Illinois University College of Arts and Humanities, Booth Library, Ruth and Vaughn Jaenike Access to the Arts Outreach Program, National Endowment for the Humanities, Tribeca Film Institute, American Library Association, Tribeca Flashpoint and the Coles County Arts Council. In addition to Dr. Loudon s program, the Danville Public Library will host Two Views of the Blues: A Photographic Exhibit of Great Blues Musicians by local photographers David Nolan and Jack Van Camp. The Blues musicians performed at the Blind Pig in Champaign and elsewhere in the 1990 s such as Li l Ed Williams, Big Time Sarah, Johnny Clyde Copeland, Five Blind Boys from Alabama, Robert Lockwood, Jr., Billy Branch, Champion Jack Dupree, and Big Daddy Kinsey. January 31, 6:30 PM David Gracon, a communications studies professor at EIU, will present his documentary Walls of Sound: A Look Inside the House of Records, a fiercelyindependent record store based in Eugene, OR, in the first floor Meeting Room. The film explores how the House of Records has survived since opening in Greg Wilson, owner of Chart Records, 131 N. Vermilion Street in Downtown Danville, will join the discussion and share his views on the industry. February 1 3 & 8 10 Live performance of To Kill A Mockingbird by the Red Mask Players at the Kathryn Randolph Theater, 601 N. Vermilion St., Danville, including a local gospel group. Marcie has extensive experience with the technology. She ll give you a demonstration on setup, usage, tips and tricks, and how to add library materials to your device. 4 Back by Popular Demand I Love Libraries Campaign With the days quickly growing colder, what could be better than curling up with a cup of hot chocolate by the fireplace and getting lost in a good book? February is Library Lovers' Month, a month-long celebration of libraries. It is a time for everyone to recognize the important role libraries play in the cultural and economic success of local communities and the nation as a whole. In the current economic climate, Danville Public Library is more popular than ever with some days reaching over 1,000 visitors. Whether families depend on our library for bestselling books, DVDs, audio books, magazines, entertaining and enriching programs, children's storytimes or access to computers and the Internet, the Danville Public Library is the heart of our community. During the month of February, Danville area residents like you, are encouraged to show how much they love their local public library. To celebrate, I Love Libraries hearts will be available for a $1.00 donation at the Checkout Desk. You can sign your name, the name of your favorite author, the name of a library staff member or the name of your special Valentine on the heart. The hearts will be prominently displayed in the Library throughout the month. All proceeds from the I Love Libraries campaign support the literacy programs and community outreach services of the library through the Danville Library Foundation. Over the years, the Foundation has been blessed to receive very generous gifts from the estates of a lot of wonderful people. Many of these bequests have been set aside, endowed, and the interest earned supports programs and services at the Danville Public Library. Gifts such as these are referred to as planned gifts. Planned gifts hold a tremendous amount of fundraising potential for a Foundation. They allow ordinary people to make extraordinary gifts. 5 From the Executive Director s Desk I f you are a YouTube fan, you may have been one of the over 585,000 viewers to watch a music video posted by Ocoee Middle School in Florida. School representatives asked the popular Hip-hop music group Black Eyed Peas for permission to use their music to I Got a Feeling as the inspiration for their new song called, Gotta Keep Reading. In the first line of the song, the lyrics tell us, Gotta keep reading... cause this book s gonna be a good book. This past year at the Danville Library Foundation has been a good book, filled with much excitement, many interesting story lines, and a great ending. As I close the cover on 2012, I pause to reflect on the abundant good fortune the past twelve months have given and I am excited to begin Chapter One of All the while, I am ever mindful of the extreme kindness and generosity of you our donors, board members, special committee members, library staff, friends and community volunteers. We needed you and you were there! In 2012, your charitable contributions made it possible for the community to Keep on reading and experience so much more! You made it possible for 970 students to come to the library and participate in the Books Your Library program and for over 175 children to be actively engaged in the eight-week long Summer Reading Program. This year, you helped us to expand the Summer Reading Program to include a Children s Teaching Garden with funding for plants and materials and a Grow N' Fit exercise component with the purchase of Xbox Kinect and fitness videos. The garden provided an opportunity for children to learn everything from caring for plants to harvesting produce and cooking tasty, healthy dishes. Grow N' Fit taught children about ways to become healthier and have fun. You also assisted us in providing the children with participation incentives such as free books and T-shirts designed by one of their peers. In addition, you helped us in hosting our Monday Matinees and Great Books to Great Films series, our high-powered magnifier program for the vision impaired, The Journey into Dyslexia program, and our annual lecture on the Intercultural Exchange on the Silk Roads of Afro- Eurasia. Thanks to you, new public use Internet computers were acquired and new audio-visual technology was purchased for the 2 nd Floor Conference Room. As in past years, you enabled us to purchase hundreds of books, in various formats, including print, e-books, Talking Books and Large Print. You helped us to purchase audio-visual materials such as DVDs, Blu-Ray discs and recorded music. All of these materials benefited our area children, teens, adults, elderly and disabled. Of course, there was the superb From Page to Stage Vol. II: The Spark of Creation concert that you supported through your sponsorship, donation, attendance or volunteerism. This event, attended by nearly 800 people, was truly exceptional and will help us to fund initiatives in For all you do and all of the lives you have enriched, we offer our sincere gratitude. So, what will happen in the new book of 2013? As the lyrics of Ocoee Middle School's song tell us, "Gotta keep reading. Cause this book's gonna be a good, good book to read." May 2013 be yet another great book filled with surprises, stories of hope, faith and generosity. Best wishes for a new year filled with good health, peace, prosperity and much happiness.
