1 Happy Holidays! Protect. Preserve. Inspire Photo by Chad Coppess Vol 2, 2018 The Partner Update Mount Rushmore National Memorial The Mount Rushmore Society is dedicated to the preservation, promotion and enhancement of Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the values it represents through a partnership with the National Park Service. WE HAVE MOVED! By Diana Nielsen Saathoff, CEO After 88 years as an organization, the Mount Rushmore Society has purchased its own building at 830 Main Street, Rapid City, SD. Those familiar with downtown Rapid City know that this building was built in the 1930s as an addition to Rapid City Motor Company at 826 Main Street. In most recent years, the building was used as a restaurant. With the architectural help of Fennell Design, Inc. and Co-op Architecture and the construction expertise of Ainsworth- Benning, we now have a beautiful, permanent office space to fulfill the mission of the Society. With a Main Street presence, future plans are in the works to open a gift shop in the front of the building. We will sell our popular, selfpublished books currently being sold at the Mount Rushmore Bookstores at the park. We also plan to sell gift items with a Black Hills flair. Visitor information will be available to orient visitors to all they can see and do in the area. In addition, the building hosts a 2,000 squarefoot event space with a projector screen and services suitable for catering. Stay tuned for more information about how your community group can utilize this space. We are setting our sights to offer educational programming about Mount Rushmore this coming summer. Feel free to stop down and visit our new space at anytime! From the President 2 Donor Spotlights 3-4 Support Your Park 5 NPS Spotlight 6 Events 7 Retail Stores 7

2 Who We Are: Mount Rushmore Society President: Tim Raben CEO: Diana Nielsen Saathoff COO: Debbie Ketel Speas Director of Finance: Lynn R. Bauter Director of Philanthropy: Stephanie Pariza Director of Retail: Anna Raue Mount Rushmore Superintendent Cheryl Schreier accepts a $100,000 check from Mount Rushmore Society President Tim Raben to use for sculpture preservation. $100,000 Sculpture Preservation Gift By Tim Raben, Society President Member & Donor Stewardship Coordinator: Patty Neumiller Mount Rushmore Bookstores Retail Manager: Laura Jones Finance Assistant: Chris Redden During our Mount Rushmore Society board retreat held in September, Society CEO Diana Saathoff and I presented Mount Rushmore National Memorial Superintendent Cheryl Schreier with a $100,000 sculpture preservation gift. This is the last installment of five $100,000 gifts that the Society pledged to the park to be used specifically for sculpture preservation at the Memorial. The funds were a result of an initial $214,000 bequest from the Betty Nelson, Yankton, SD, estate. The Society contributed an additional $200,000 and has managed the fund for its ultimate donation to the National Park Service. The National Park Service will use this next installment to replace some of the aging fiberoptic components of the Rock Block Monitoring System, explains Schreier. The Rock Block Monitoring System was first put in place more than 20 years ago to monitor changes within the sculpture due to weather and time. This component update is needed to incorporate the latest fiber optic technology. Although this project has been fully funded, there are always ways to continue supporting Mount Rushmore by donating to the Society. Contact Stephanie Pariza at stephanie@ mtrushmore.org or for more information on the ways that you can support the park. 4 Mount Rushmore Society Hosts President Andrew Jackson By Debbie Ketel Speas, COO The Society s annual fundraising dinner was held on October 13 with re-enactor Bob Gleason of American Historical Theatre as Andrew Jackson. On October 12, Jackson also had the opportunity to speak at Westhills Village Retirement Community. He was interviewed by several news outlets about President Jackson s successes and personality. Proceeds from the annual fundraiser will go toward the Monumental Movie Campaign to replace the movies currently being shown during the Evening Lighting Ceremony and daily in the Lincoln Borglum Museum. Attendees participated in a chance drawing of various items. The event could not have happened without the partnership and generosity of Xanterra Parks & Resorts, as they prepare the fabulous meal, sponsor the social hour and always donate a national park package to the event. This year, Marnie and Doug Herrmann won the Glacier National Park package as thanks for their pledge to the Monumental Movie Campaign. Special thanks goes out to all our sponsors listed on this page. Pariza comes to the Society from Houston, TX, where she most recently served as the development director for Discovery Green Conservancy, a 12-acre park located in downtown Houston designed as an engaging and active place with programming for all ages. In addition, Pariza has over 15 years of nonprofit experience, serving in various roles with Houston s Opera in the Heights, Houston Grand Opera, Memorial Hermann Foundation and the University of Houston Law Center. She also served as director of the National Opera Center in New York City, NY. Pariza s focus for the coming year will be spearheading the fundraising for the Monumental Movie Campaign for Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The campaign is a $2 million project to replace the two outdated, educational films shown at the park and to upgrade the equipment necessary for projection. The goal is to have funds in place within the next months. Find out how you can contribute to the Monumental Movie Campaign by contacting Pariza directly at or stephanie@mtrushmore.org. 5

6 Spotlight on National Park Service Team Member Blaine Kortemeyer Deputy Chief of Interpretation and Education Blaine Kortemeyer is a long-time ranger with Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Prior to coming to the Black Hills, he worked as a seasonal park ranger in Colorado at Curecanti National Recreation Area, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and at Canyonlands National Park in Utah. Blaine s first permanent position was in Alabama at Russell Cave National Monument. Mount Rushmore National Memorial brought him and his family home in the spring of 2001 where he started as a front-line interpreter. He and his wife, Joey, are both from eastern South Dakota. So,they felt it was very important to call South Dakota d home as they raised their children. Alex is now 20. AJ is 16, and daughter Kellyn is 14. My family is a blessing, explains Kortemeyer. If it wasn t for my bride of 24 years, I might not be a park ranger. She helped give me the drive that I needed during the early years of my career, when permanent jobs seemed elusive. Blaine continues to be inspired by the Memorial every day and is a great ambassador for South Dakota s main tourist attraction. He says, If you haven t been to the mountain in a while, come spend some quality time soon! Just as important Mount Rushmore National Memorial TOP THINGS TO DO IN 2019 While we are undergoing a remodeling project to the Mount Rushmore grounds, there are still the following wonderful things to see and do at the Memorial. Find updates on this project at View the sculpture from the Carvers Marketplace and Borglum View Terrace. Visit the historic Sculptor s Studio. Attend the Evening Lighting Ceremony, held nightly throughout the summer. Rent a Mount Rushmore Self-Guided Tour. Participate in ranger-led tours. Visit the Gift Shop, Mount Rushmore Bookstores and Carvers Marketplace. Deputy Chief of Interpretation and Education Blaine Kortemeyer as spending some quality time with the mountain, is quality time with your families... and quality time with our extended family, the visitors of this great Memorial. Our visitors inspire me every day. The National Park Service has announced an extensive remodeling project at the park during 2019/2020. The South Dakota Tourism Industry, the Society and the NPS are diligently working on messaging that stresses that the park WILL be OPEN during the remodeling. Stay tuned for more information on their progress in improving the visitor experience for the future! Photo by Rodger Slott 6

7 Support Mount Rushmore With Your Annual Membership Thank you for supporting Mount Rushmore with your resources throughout the year by donations, sponsorships, partnerships and time. Another way to support the park is contributing as an annual member of the Mount Rushmore Society. Last year, we changed up our membership program. One of the most exciting changes to our program is the addition of the $25 Veteran membership to honor those who have served or currently serving in the military. Veterans receive a special commemorative gold pin. Thanks to the efforts of our sales staff, more than 500 veterans were honored with a Veterans Pin. All other members receive a special commemorative silver pin. Annual memberships are good one year from purchase. To make a membership gift or to renew your membership, go online at mountrushmoresociety. com or stop by. Mount Rushmore Memories News Mount Rushmore Bookstores News The Mount Rushmore Bookstores administrative staff recently moved back into their offices, named Residence II, at Mount Rushmore. The staff had relocated to Keystone for the summer during the park s Sculptor s Studio and Residence II historic restoration project. As a result of this project, the Bookstores will open up an expanded store in the Sculptor s Studio in May, The larger Sculptor s Studio store will provide all the great educational items that visitors look for in their trip to the park, as well as greater visitor services, including public restrooms. As always, our popular Mount Rushmore Bookstores items may be found online at www. mountrushmoresociety.com.
