Society Donates $100,000 to Sculpture Preservation of Mount Rushmore By Diana Nielsen Saathoff, Executive Director The latest gift to the National Park Service by the Mount Rushmore Society is a great example of YOUR donations at work. During the February Society board meeting, Society President Judy Allen and Society Executive Director Diana Saathoff presented Mount Rushmore National Memorial Superintendent Cheryl Schreier with a $100,000 sculpture preservation gift. This is the third of five $100,000 gifts that the Society will give to the park to be used specifically for sculpture preservation at the Memorial. The funds are a result of an initial $214,000 bequest from the Betty Nelson, Yankton, SD, estate. The Mount Rushmore Society contributed an additional $200,000 and has managed the fund for its ultimate donation to the National Park Service (NPS). The NPS will use this next installment for new training apparatus to be installed in the interior of the Amphitheater building. It will also provide training and certification for the park s Rope Access Team on site. The Ropes Access Team (as viewed below) assists with the preservation and maintenance of the sculpture. Annual Meeting Highlights Friend of Faces Awards By Judy Allen, President The perseverance, motivation and enduring dedication of the Society board of directors was recognized at the 2016 Annual Meeting with the Corporate Friend of the Faces Award. This board had taken on impressive fundraising for the monument and ultimately was requested by the National Park Service to finance, construct and operate the Mount Rushmore parking facility. The board signed an approximately $17 million mortgage to fulfill the request. The facility increased parking spaces from approximately 400 to 1200 by Through continuous hard work and commitment by Presidential Parking Inc., staff and the Society board, the mortgage was paid off in The income from the parking facility has funded the operations of the Society to better support fundraising and marketing for Mount Rushmore. Members of the board were: Kirk Dean, Tom Lane, Sharon Lee, Leroy Ketel, Ray Aldrich, Eddie Clay, Morris Hallock, Carolyn Mollers, Paul Reinke, Jim Bell, Johnny Brockelsby, Jim Borglum, Shirley Fauth, Lloyd Keszler, Jim Kuehn, Bev Locke, Jim Nelson, John Samuelsen, Richard Schleusener, Richard Tobias and Fred Whiting. 4 Celebrating the 75th Mount Rushmore Society Hosts Many Ways for YOU to Celebrate This Year By Ruth Samuelsen, 75th Anniversary Committee Chair The Mount Rushmore Society has been working on many ways that YOU, our members, donors and visitors to the Black Hills can celebrate a significant anniversary in Mount Rushmore history. We supported our partners with 4 Top Photo: Macy s Day Parade Float. Bottom Photo: Parade of Roses Float. the South Dakota Department of Tourism in promoting South Dakota during the Macy s Day Parade last Thanksgiving and the Rose Bowl Parade on January 1. Tens of millions of people were able to see and hear about why South Dakota (and Mount Rushmore!) is the place to visit this summer. In addition, Society volunteers, like YOU, decorated a Christmas tree right outside Governor Daugaard s office during the 2015 Christmas at the Capitol event. More than 20,000 people toured the Capitol during the 2015 Christmas season. We are on tap to decorate the premier 40-foot tree during the 2016 Christmas in the Capitol. Let us know if you are interested in helping with this event. To help spread the word about the 75th to our tourism partners across the state, Society board members and staff sponsored the opening reception of the Governor s Conference on Tourism in January. More than 500 tourism representatives and South More than 500 South Dakota tourism partners and legislators gathered to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the completion of Mount Rushmore during the Rocking 75 Years South Dakota Tourism Conference Opening Reception sponsored the Society. Dakota legislators celebrated the year with food, beverages and the everpopular Mount Rushmore photo booth. To continue the message of visiting Mount Rushmore this year, the Society sponsored the Sutton Rodeo during the 2016 Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo. Yee haw!

6 Mount Rushmore Bookstores Publishes Historical Writings By Debbie Ketel Speas, Communications Director What began as an idea generated by a few volunteers and National Park Service representatives has now developed into a publication that is sure to be a must-have for any Mount Rushmore historian. During a publications meeting of the Mount Rushmore Bookstores, the possibility of publishing past writings of Mount Rushmore visionaries was discussed writings that give a first-person account of the challenges and successes of carving a mountain. As a result of this collaboration, the Mount Rushmore Bookstores has published In Their Own Words: The Carving of Mount Rushmore, a 52- page soft-cover book on sale now for $ This publication is a compilation of articles written by some of the early supporters of Mount Rushmore. Their original writings appeared in publications published by the Mount Rushmore Society from the 1930s to the 1960s to explain how and why Mount Rushmore was carved, as well as to promote the Black Hills and membership in the organization. The articles reflect the opinions and passions of each writer, providing a unique historical account of the carving that was finished 75 years ago. The book includes background on each writer, including Doane Robinson, Gutzon Borglum, Peter Norbeck, William Williamson, Mary Borglum, President Calvin Coolidge, Lincoln Borglum and more. It also features historical photos and a timeline of the major events in the carving of Mount Rushmore. IN THEIR OWN WORDS THE CARVING OF MOUNT RUSHMORE MOUNT RUSHMORE BOOKSTORES The book can be purchased at the Mount Rushmore Bookstores and online at mountrushmoresociety.com. The Mount Rushmore Memories Airport proudly carries our original publications, like our Mount Rushmore children s books and limited-edition Christmas ornament collection (shown above). We also carry local Native American products such as jewelry, vases, dolls and more. News From the Mount Rushmore Memories Airport Store By Anna Raue, Retail Manager Business at the Mount Rushmore Memories Airport Store has taken flight and we are off to a busy travel season. As the weather improves and the summer season approaches, we are seeing an increase in flights and a boost in sales. This leads us to believe that it is going to be a great summer. 6 New inventory is arriving daily, and our frequent travelers stop in just to see what fun new items we have to offer. We are proud to feature our original Mount Rushmore publications as well as local Native American artists and products in our store. We carry beautiful handmade items such as jewelry, notecards and pottery, to name a few. Visitors who stop in to find a souvenir from South Dakota do not leave disappointed. Come and see us the next time you are travelling!
7 On the Move in D.C. By Gary Keller, Development Director Just in time to catch the beginning of the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C., President Judy Allen, Executive Director Diana Saathoff and Development Director Gary Keller once again made the annual trek to attend the National Park Friends Alliance Conference and make a trip to Capitol Hill to confer with South Dakota s Congressional Representatives, March Saathoff is on the steering committee for the Alliance, which is an affiliation group comprised of National Park Foundation, Public Lands Alliance (formerly Association of Partners in Public Lands) and friends groups from around the country like the Mount Rushmore Society. The conference centered primarily on the National Park Service s (NPS) long-awaited revision of Director s Order #21, the bureau's principal policy to guide NPS engagement in public-private partnerships and provide guidance on the acceptance of private sector support for organizations such as the Mount Rushmore Society. The Society delegation heard from NPS Director Jon Jarvis and Deputy Director Peggy O Dell, among others. In addition, the Society group met collectively with South Dakota Senators John Thune, Mike Rounds and Congresswoman Kristi Noem at their regularly scheduled Constituent Coffee. We then followed up with a private audience with Senator Thune and his Senior Policy Advisor Lynn Tjeerdsma to discuss issues specific to Mount Rushmore and elaborate on the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the completion of Mount Rushmore. The desired goal of this annual trip is to stay current on issues impacting how the Society raises funds for Society Development Director Gary Keller, Senator Mike Rounds, Senator John Thune, Society President Judy Allen, Society Executive Director Diana Saathoff and Congresswoman Kristi Noem pose for a picture during the Constituent Coffee. projects and programs that benefit, as well as to keep our Congressional representatives informed as to our concerns and activities back home. All in all, the time was well spent, as the Society continues to craft our plans and activities for the benefit of Society members, donors and the State of South Dakota at-large. Black Hills Home Show Sales Break Record It was another banner year at the Black Hills Home Show in March. In partnership with Xanterra Parks & Resorts, we sold 950 packets, which included a 2016 parking pass and two free tickets for a Monumental breakfast at Carvers Cafe, for only $8. This was up 300 passes over last year, and our best year ever selling to the local community! We thank all the volunteers and staff who helped in the booth. This outreach effort to the local community has been tremendously rewarding over the years. Thank you for stopping by our booth at the Home Show and supporting Mount Rushmore! Not only are we preparing for the extra people from the Black Hills area to visit this year, but we are looking forward to a successful tourist season. We are busy re-striping parking spots and doing the typical maintenance to welcome all the visitors to the Black Hills during this special anniversary year! 7
