4 SHERMANTHEATRE.CO.UK WELCOME CROESO Croeso i Theatr y Sherman. I am delighted to welcome you to our programme, which includes some extraordinary work on both our beautiful stages. We have new plays and bold new productions of classic texts made for you, our audience. We are proud to share the first co-production between Sherman Theatre and Theatr Clwyd, marking a significant step for both these Welsh venues. This all-female version of Lord of the Flies, directed by award-winning Northern Irish director Emma Jordan, will be a revelatory reading of this story. We are honoured and delighted to produce Fel Anifail, by the late Meic Povey. This extraordinary Welsh language play is rooted in Welsh identity, our connection to the land and what matters to us at the end of the road. This will be directed by young director Jac Ifan Moore, who has been nurtured through the Sherman artist development programme. When Meic and I spoke about this play it was clear how much it meant to him; I am proud to show this writer s work both to a new audience, and an audience who already love his work. Later in the season, our first Company in Residence, Cwmni Pluen, will present Mags bilingual physical theatre made by one of Wales most exciting young companies. We also launch our new programme to showcase Welsh theatre, Get It While It s Hot. This is an opportunity for you to catch the freshest, hottest, newest talent in our Studio. At Christmas, we will share a bold, fun, warm and crazy Alice in Wonderland on our main stage for our family audiences. This is a beloved story, and I can t wait to direct it. As with all our Christmas shows, this will feature amazing design, live music and be a theatre experience which has become a special Christmas treat for Cardiff audiences. In our Studio, our former Associate Director Gethin Evans will create a new, bilingual version of Little Red Riding Hood / Yr Hugan Fach Goch for our younger audiences, full of fun and magic. With a varied programme of exciting guest artists, this season is a mix of the new and the classic, with a Sherman spin that makes it special. Thank you to our audiences, friends, partners and supporters who have joined us on this special journey. In January 2018 Sherman Theatre became the first in Wales to win the Regional Theatre of the Year title at The Stage Awards, recognising the Sherman as the most exciting theatre in the UK, outside of London. In April 2018 Rachel O Riordan s production of Killology by Gary Owen won the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Affiliate Theatre. This was a co-production with London s Royal Court Theatre. Mae 2018 wedi profi i fod yn flwyddyn ryfeddol i Theatr y Sherman hyd yn hyn. Of their friends who have gone before them, their children who are no longer around and the secrets they have kept. Those secrets conceal the ghosts of the past. Who was to blame? What exactly happened on that fateful day? All will become clear when their time comes to leave this world. This is a chance to see an intimate and poignant drama by the late Meic Povey, one of the most important playwrights Wales has ever produced, in a new and necessary production by Sherman Theatre. 33 SHERMANTHEATRE.CO.UK JMK/SHERMAN DIRECTORS GROUP GRW^ P CYFARWYDDWYR JMK/SHERMAN In partnership with the JMK Trust and funded by The Carne Trust our JMK/Sherman Directors programme develops the theatre makers of the future through workshops, discussions and paid development opportunities. Throughout 2018 a group of emerging directors are working under the guidance of director Adele Thomas to ensure Wales is home to some of the best young directing talent. The Sherman has shown great faith in us by providing opportunities to compete for assistant and directing work. Sherman Theatre is passionate about providing a platform for Welsh and Wales based writers, ensuring the future of the arts in this country goes from strength to strength. The programme is generously supported by The Carne Trust. One thing which has been helpful is access to people, thought, events. Through our ground breaking communities and engagement projects and our warm, welcoming attitude, Sherman Theatre proves theatre is for everyone. This autumn the generous five years of funding of Sherman 5 from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation will come to an end. Over the last five years, Sherman 5 has supported over 12,500 attendances from people facing barriers or disadvantage. The project has made a real difference to the lives of members. We asked some Sherman 5 members what the scheme has meant to them. I ve swapped alcohol addiction for an addiction to theatre. Dwi wedi cyfnewid dibyniaeth at alcohol am ddibyniaeth at y theatr.
