This year we are celebrating our 30th festival with a bumper collection of concerts, including superb Welsh choral singing, scintillating jazz, the finest classical music, and talks, interviews and masterclasses. Musicians from all over the Julius Drake world will be arriving to sing and play in the beautiful Tabernacle, a concert hall that we can proudly boast has one of the finest acoustics in Britain and Europe. Just to mention some of the highlights of the week: a great Welsh tradition, Cymanfa Ganu, congregational singing in four part harmony; the wonderful male voice choir, Cantorion Gogledd Cymru; Songs about us, the family lunchtime concert which is completely free for all; a return visit by the great bass-baritone, Sir Willard White, in a programme that includes selections from the American Songbook and who also gives the Festival Masterclass, open for all to attend and learn from, when he works with gifted young singers from the British conservatories; the brilliant Budapest Café Orchestra; one of the finest British string quartets, the Navarra, making their Festival debut; The Singing Cellist, a late night hour of side splitting fun and satire; the barn storming duo of Russian violinist, Alexander Sitkovetsky and Ukranian violist, Maxim Rysanov; Pascal Rogé, doyen of French pianists, talking to Christopher Cook, and performing a ravishing programme of French piano masterpieces; the Ferio Saxophone Quartet by candlelight, bewitching us with the sound of four saxophones playing in harmony; an all Mozart programme from the rather special young Italian pianist Saskia Giorgini, this year s winner at the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg; and our Festival Finale, the extraordinary wind quintet from the Netherlands, Calefax, who present a winning programme of much-loved classics. The Machynlleth Festival continues the tradition by opening with its own Cymanfa Ganu. Also included in the programme are Mozart's special and unique Adagio in B minor and a world premiere from Camden Reeves, currently professor of composition at Manchester University. They are joined by TRIO, a new singing experience from the heart of Snowdonia, featuring the great young voices of Bedwyr Gwyn Parri, Emyr Wyn Gibson and Steffan Lloyd Owen. This talk will challenge these views by examining how Wales and India interacted during the creation of the British Indian Empire between 1750 and Illustrated talk in English. The first half of their concert includes a Haydn masterpiece and a quartet by the celebrated Latvian composer, Peter Vasks. The Ferio Saxophone Quartet is one of the finest in the world and they offer a ravishing late night programme of music from Purcell to Piazzola. This year the young Italian pianist Saskia Giorgini joins us for a programme devoted to the immortal music of Mozart. Marco Borggreve Thursday 25 / 6:30pm Hungary London The Budapest Cafe Orchestra in Conversation The members of the Budapest Cafe Orchestra talk about the music they play and its roots that reach deep into Central Europe. Friday 26 / 6:30pm Fire and Ice - Baltic Composers We have been long familiar with great choral tradition in those countries that border the Baltic. And if we add Finland to their number then Sibelius has always been appreciated in Britain. But it's only during the past thirty years that the music by a generation of composers who grew up in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia has caught our ears. Music that was effectively composed during two occupations for a half of the last century: by Germany and the Soviet Union. Saturday 27 / 3pm Interview Pascal Rogé In conversation with Christopher Cook, one of the most admired of contemporary pianists talks about his career and the music that he plays. Sunday 28 / 6:30pm The Lull before the Storm European music from For a golden quarter of a century before the Great War European music embraced Romanticism to create the lush style that we know as Late Romanticism. If Wagner was their prophet, many European composers took the Master's musical revolution onwards and upwards to ever more vertiginous chromatic heights. Others, notably in France decried him as a false prophet and struck out on their own. And then came those fatal pistol shots in Sarajevo. The ripe Late Romantic Autumn turned to Winter
