I've typically stuck to the obvious and more direct benefits, but there are a couple that DO deserve your attention because they combine education AND opportunities. The Road Rally is coming up November 6th-9th, 2008 in Los Angeles. They re open to a wide variety of approaches here, but the sound should fit within the range of the artists listed as references. They would prefer male vocals only. Lyrically, you might want to submit material with a universal point of view in order to have the potential to fit with ease into a number of different storylines/settings. Staying away from specific locations, names, times, etc. can allow for more possibilities in terms of Film/TV placements. Excellent performances are absolutely essential. A marketable image, amazing songs and a career that s already on its way will also be some major factors here. Touring experience is a huge plus and you should also have a fan base that s growing progressively with your efforts. While the focus will still be on marketability and accessibility, this label wants to hear something new and different. They are looking for songs to add to their catalog of diverse, independent music that will be pitched to the key decision makers in various areas including Film/TV/Advertising/Video Games/etc. They gave an extensive list of song references to show what quality and style they re looking for: Lazy Eye by Silversun Pickups, Discipline by NIN, Susan s House by the Eels, Naive by The Kooks and Brighter Discontent by The Submarines. They are primarily looking for songs with vocals, but will accept instrumentals if they fall along the lines of Tomoyasu Hotei s Battle Without Honor or Humanity or Kinky s Mas. They aren t looking for soundalikes of any of these songs - they want to hear original material with fresh/modern hooks and tons of commercial viability. They offer an exclusive one-year licensing deal, on a per song basis. The artist/writer has the option to renew or opt out at the end of the one-year period. You ll need to own your publishing rights in full and to have signed work-for-hire agreements with any musicians who played on your recordings - full clearances and master/sync rights. Country/Folk Listings (also see Country, Film/TV, Instrumental listings, etc.): BLUEGRASS COVERS OF POPULAR SONGS (non-bluegrass; i.e. Foo Fighters or Kelly Clarkson or Rolling Stones, etc.) are sought after by a wellestablished Independent Label who specializes in creating Bluegrass tribute albums to popular bands/artists. One of their latest is called Bleed It Out: The Bluegrass Tribute to Foo Fighters, to give you an idea of what they re looking for. They want cover arrangements of popular songs that are filled with great finger-pickin and authentic bluegrass chops. You can choose any song you d like to cover, but it s recommended that it be one that has been quite popular and recognizable. Previous tribute albums have been of Metallica/The Shins/Kelly Clarkson/etc., so the choice of material is pretty wide open in terms of style. COUNTRY BANDS a la Wilco, The Jayhawks, I See Hawks in L.A, etc. This label/publisher caters to independent musicians, and has domestic and international presence in Europe, Australia, and Japan. They primarily focus on Film/TV licensing, advertising, video game placements, and compilation CDs. Broadcast quality is needed, but excellent home recordings will work well. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than August 6, TAXI #S080806AC Blues Listings: CONTEMPORARY & TRADITIONAL BLUES SONGS in the range of Johnny Lang, Susan Tedeschi, Robert Cray, Taj Mahal, Bonnie Raitt, etc. are wanted by a Global Music Licensing company who is building their catalog to promote toward a variety of worldwide licensing opportunities. Male or female vocals are just fine and excellent performances are vital. While they d love to find several songs by the same artist, they re open to single tracks as well. This company offers a non-exclusive agreement and you must completely own your Master and Sync rights, in order to submit to this listing. This company is also extensively experienced in creative marketing and promotions, both with events and the production/distribution of a variety of CD projects. Artists/writers who are selected for their catalog will certainly benefit from the aggressive promotion of the material they represent. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD. 3 Christmas Listings: CHRISTMAS SONGS IN ANY STYLE are wanted by an established Independent Music Publisher. This Publisher has tons of Film/TV placements and has signed dozens of TAXI writers. He s open to traditional Christmas songs or current/contemporary Christmas songs, but he s specifically looking for unique arrangements - not exact replicas of the original version. For instance, if God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is traditionally recorded with an organ, you might want to submit an acoustic guitar version. The possibilities are wide open here, but he really wants to find some very unique approaches to familiar Christmas songs. He would prefer songs with vocals, but will consider instrumentals as well. If your arrangement is an instrumental, it s strongly recommended that it sound quite unique to the original version of the song you ve chosen. Stylistically, there are no limitations here - just be creative! Excellent performances are necessary and the recordings must be broadcast quality. The President of this company will be screening the submissions himself. This company splits the license fee with you 40/60 [that 60% is for you] and doesn t take any publishing. Think along the lines of songs that would be pitched toward Nicole Mullen, Point Of Grace, Wes King, Steven Curtis Chapman, Susan Ashton, Michael W. Smith, etc. Songs with overt Christian references are fine, but it s recommended that a balance between conversational and religious/spiritual tones is there. In other words, it may not be the best idea to simply quote scripture for this one. A more personal interpretation and a very real & human experience might make for a more unique and solid pitch. Musically, the tone should be contemporary with big hooks and emotional/powerful lyrics. All tempos will be considered for this listing. Songs with great stories in a unique voice will certainly stand out here, along with really powerful melodies and hooks. They re not looking for anything but outstanding, different and undeniably great. While they d like to move a bit beyond where this artist has been in his previous projects, be careful that the material still stays firmly rooted in what can be heard on mainstream Country radio and what this artist represents to his audience. While they are looking for songs that are a bit more mature lyrically than what this artist has recorded before, the songs still need to be definitively Hank. Great hooks with attitude and energy could definitely rise to the top here! Think of capturing a great outlaw voice in the lyric stories and remember to keep it conversational. This young, female artist will be going into the studio soon and needs great songs that are along the lines of She s In Love With The Boy or any number of things that you might hear Taylor Swift sing. She s young and she s new on the scene, getting ready to record her debut after getting her initial exposure on American Idol. Lyrically, the tone should be light but not childish. Fun, adventure, dreams, romance, etc are all topics that might be good to explore for this one. Solid hooks with catchy choruses are key - heavy on the pop! They ve already cut six sides and are still looking for the rest! They re open to all tempos, but they re really looking for the great uptempo hit - similar to Redneck Yacht Club. A touching mid tempo song like That s What I Love About Sunday could also be a great pitch for this one. Unique lyric stories and great imagery can always make a huge difference! Her debut single went to radio in February, but they re still looking for a few more songs to complete the project. This artist is soulful like Bonnie Raitt, with a wide range and a rich voice. Lyrics that talk about everyday living and real people are what they re looking for here. Stories that ring true along with a bit of attitude could make for a good combination. All tempos will be considered for this one, but uptempos are preferable. Because there is a tight timeline for this project and the need is ASAP, we ll need to run this without critiques. This trio has a new female singer and has undergone some changes, but they re still known as a bar rockin, hard-core honky tonk band who loves dancin and drinkin. The songs can be rowdy and you can push the envelope lyrically, but keep in mind that they ll still be looking for songs with tender messages and poignant stories as well. All tempos will be considered for this one - they just need hits! Lyric stories with great imagery and cut-to-the-chase hooks will certainly stand out for this one. They need standout lyric stories and great melodic hooks. This duo writes a lot of their own material, but they really need a couple of undeniable radio singles. These two aren t over the top rowdy, but a little bit of edge lyrically would be recommended. A fine balance between youthful Southern charm(these guys come from Eastern Kentucky) and boys out having a good time could be something to aim for. 4 Country Listings continued: CONTEMPORARY COUNTRY/POP CROSSOVER SONGS in the range of Rascal Flatts, LeAnn Rimes, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Faith Hill, etc. are needed by a Nashville producer who is still looking for several more songs for a few projects. Since he s primarily concerned with the core song being outstanding and has both male and female artists, you can submit male or female vocals/lyrics. He needs great radio singles and is searching for at least five additional songs. Great lyric stories, catchy melodic hooks and a current tone are all essential here. They d love to find several songs with the same kind of energy and tone as Born To Fly. As usual, the bottom line is that they need hit songs! Great melodic hooks and lyrics with a twist & engaging imagery could really push your song into the spotlight here. They re just starting to look, so all tempos will be considered at this point. This new male artist is influenced by the likes of George Jones, Merle Haggard and Keith Whitley. He s young and has developed his own style and sound, but the traditions of country music run at the core of his artistry. The producer is looking for songs that reflect solid, traditional country music along with a tip of the hat to the age of this artist (early 20s). Great melodic hooks and lyric stories that bend and twist in all the right ways could make a strong pitch for this artist. Lyrically, the core perspectives shouldn t be too mature as he is a young man - but the traditional tales of family/love/romance/values/etc. are just fine. This artist has a big range and so the producers want to hear wide, sweeping melodies that will feature her vocal ability. As usual, hit songs are the overall request - radio singles with breakout, stand alone hooks that will set this new artist apart. Lyrics with a youthful tone blended with the perspective of a young woman could be especially right for this artist. Songs about having fun, living life, chasing dreams, etc. are equally as important as the ones about heartbreak, romance, love and loss. All tempos will be considered for this one. A strong leaning toward a Pop-heavy melodic hook might be a great direction to move in here. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD, include lyrics. Stories that are engaging, with monster hooks and twists, could make all the difference here. Mid - to up-tempo songs preferred, though ballads may be considered if the song is really solid.
