Parkway Calabasas, Suite 200, Calabasas, CA Please call if you have problems or questions Dear Passengers, Which Music Library is Best for You? I got a call from a TAXI member on Friday of last week. He asked if I could suggest which music library would be best for him. He wanted to Exploit the best avenue out there. He didn t really understand that there are many different types of music libraries out there, and they re not all created equal! How to Find the Answer There are a couple of websites that rate an array of music different libraries, but as we ve all figured out by now: Ratings given from songwriters and composers are largely subjective and based on whether or not the library accepted his or her music, or not! Oftentimes, the lower quality bar, the higher ratings. Low Bar or High Yield? Do you really want to be signed to a library that has a lower quality bar and takes virtually any music that isn t terrible? Of course not! You want to be in the better, higher-end libraries. Why? They tend to have more personal relationships, which often result in better opportunities for the music in their catalog and higher sync fees as well! I like to call those, High Yield Opportunities. The Case for Both Types of Libraries I know some very successful TAXI members who only put their music in Non-Exclusive libraries some with a pretty low bar and they rarely get paid an upfront sync fee. They re in so many catalogs that their music gets used very frequently. But in most cases, the performance income per show is pretty low. Then again, if the shows are played multiple times a day in countries all over the world, the cumulative result can add up to some big dollars. Quantity over quality? Maybe! I know other musicians who only put their music in Exclusive catalogs because they like getting upfront sync fees, which is something that tends to happen more frequently with Exclusive companies. But, nailing down a montage placement at the end of a Grey s Anatomy episode is not something that s going to happen as frequently as getting instrumental cues in a bunch of reality shows. It really comes down to the number of slots that need placements. Some people chose the path of least resistance, and I can t say that s a bad idea! I also know plenty of musicians that put their music in both Exclusive and Non-Exclusive libraries. They tend to put their songs in Exclusive catalogs, and their instrumental cues in Non-Exclusive catalogs and several of them to boot! They like to cover all the bases. Here s Where it Gets Weird Many musicians I see posting on Internet forums look like they put far more research and effort into choosing which gear they re going to buy than they do choosing which music libraries they want to have pitching their music! The music you make can be thought of as an investment that pays dividends in the future. And just like the retirement money you invest, you want to build a mixed portfolio. In other words, you probably shouldn t put all your eggs in one basket by committing the following, fatal mistake. The My Publisher Mistake Musicians love to be validated, and rightfully so. But is that need for validation enough to make what I think is a rookie mistake that can rob you of income for decades to come? It must be, because I hear this telltale phrase used by more composers and artists than not: My publisher. Musicians often fall in love with the first company that says, I love you. It s so validating they can hardly be blamed. Especially if they ve already been rejected by a few high-yield companies. 1

2 But, does acceptance by that I love you company, mean your music is in the right catalog? Some libraries do a great job of getting placements in feature films. Others tend to hit more home runs in reality TV. And yet others might have lots of relationships with ad agencies or trailer houses. Rarely will you find a music library that hits homeruns with all of the above. Just because they love your music and offer you a deal doesn t mean they ll get you lots of placements! That seems like a big price to pay just so you can talk about my publisher with your family and friends. I know it sounds impressive... I get it! But getting the right music in the right catalogs so it can earn real income would sound much more impressive. My Opinion If you re offered a deal with a music library, don t rush to put all your eggs in their basket. If they love you, somebody else will as well. It may take some time and a bunch of pitches to find other companies for your music, but my advice is to put your investment into several catalogs. Spread your bets and hedge your bets! If one company goes in the ditch for a while, others will likely pick up the slack. The Best Advice As any experienced TAXI member would tell you: Write, Submit, Forget, and Repeat. In other words, don t get hung up on any one pitch, just keep writing and submitting. Forget that you pitched it, and move on move forward! At the end of the day, delay has a cost, just like putting too many eggs in one basket! Talk to you soon, Michael P.S. Great song structure will help you on this pitch! Your production and overall demo presentation should be strong for this pitch! Please submit one to three Songs online or per CD, include lyrics. Give them well-crafted, Down-to-Mid-Tempo Songs that would be on playlists with artists like (but not limited to): Celine Dion: Leona Lewis: Sarah McLachlan: Please submit melodically compelling songs with relatable lyrics, and an outstanding vocal performance. Songs should have a big, soaring chorus that sounds like a believable A/C cut. Even though Celine Dion and Sarah McLachlan are among the references, you d be smart to avoid sounding dated. If you ve got an existing song with dated synth sounds, you might want to freshen them up with something more modern. Lyric themes can vary, but should be something commonly heard in the A/C world. Relationship songs are a good default, but you don t need to limit yourself to just those. Universal lyrics that avoid specific names, places, dates, times, profanity, or detailed storylines are needed for this pitch. Broadcast quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine). You d be wise to have a solid, super confident vocal performance to get the Publisher and Artist excited about cutting your song. That said, if they hear a really compelling Ballad, they ll go for it. Quoting the source: Looking for emotional, compelling, story-based Country Songs having to do with a couple breaking up and the main character wanting/hoping/praying to get back together with his or her partner. Perhaps their relationship is a lost cause, but that won't stop the main character from pouring his or her heart out in song. Themes could also be about someone who's brokenhearted after a break up and a new love interest comes on the scene, as in Keith Urban's hot new duet, The Fighter. The publisher is NOT interested in angry or depressing breakup tunes, or drinking-to-forget themes, but rather songs with some type of silver lining. Since these are common, universal themes, it's important that the lyrics offer fresh perspectives and emotional stories that capture the listener's attention, starting with the very first line. Melodies need to be current, tightly structured, and feature stand-alone, super compelling hit choruses that come in by 1:00 minute into the tune. Please limit verses to 2 or 3 max, with tight structures like ABABCB or AABABCB that feature clear sectional contrast. It's recommended that you listen to recent hits by the artists mentioned to get a general vibe of tunes that could work for the listing. Great info, right?!! Couldn t have said it better ourselves!
