Parkway Calabasas, Suite 200, Calabasas, CA Please call if you have problems or questions Dear Passengers, I don't agree with whoever it was that said You can't steal second base if you keep one foot on first. If first base is your home and family and second base is that feeling you get when millions of people enjoy your music, then making money with Film and TV placements might feel like stealing home plate while keeping one foot on first. You don't need to leave your family or home. You don't need to live in a music city like LA, NY, or Nashville. You don't need to spend twelve hours a day online marketing your CD. Mostly, you just get to make music. People laughed at me when I started TAXI because we were helping Indie artists get their songs licensed in movies and TV shows. They laughed at me again a couple of years ago when I wrote an article called Retire Like a Rock Star. In it, I doled out a prescription for making smaller amounts of money than most real rock stars make, but with a plan to make it over a longer period of time. I'm a firm believer that the future will foster the growth of a Musician Middle Class. With the economy in the dumper, that plan is sounding pretty good right about now. Here's the deal with Film and TV music. It's a hell of a lot easier to get a song placed in a TV show than it is to get a record deal. TV shows often want hip, cool, contemporary music, and they also look for things like Comedy, Horrific, Heavy Metal, Hip-Hop, Rock, Country, Orchestral and just about every other genre of instrumental music you can think of. They also have needs for songs with lyrics that record labels would consider dated. Sound like the Doobies? Not twenty-something? You probably won't get a record deal, but you might be perfect for That 70 s Show or a feature film that takes place in the 70 s. You'd also be surprised how many solo instrumentals (think acoustic guitar, piano, banjo, harp, etc.) that get used. They might not make you a fortune over night, but they add up over time. I wonder how many of TAXI members have listened to me as I've repeated that mantra over the years and are now beginning to get checks from their placements? For those who started years ago, that income could come in handy as the economy heads South and building a financial safety net becomes more important than ever. This recession isn't our first and it won't be our last. Many of you reading this may be worried about your job. I'm pretty sure if you started today, you'd begin building a catalog for the next recession. And maybe, just maybe, you might even make a little bit of money before this one ends. AAA/Alternative /Modern Rock Listings (also see Americana, Contemporary Christian, Film/TV, Rock, Singer/Songwriter listings, etc.): DANCE ROCK ARTISTS (think MGMT, Black Kids, Danger Radio, etc.) are sought after by the host of an established Radio Show highlighting outstanding Indie Artists in the U.S. This show has already featured dozens of TAXI artists and they ve all enjoyed exposure to over 10 million listeners and really solid promotion on the company website - each artist typically gets thousands of new hits, just from being featured on this popular show. This show is the #1 CHR (Current Hit Radio) Radio Broadcast Network in Europe and Germany. The music must be from U.S.-based artists/bands who write and perform their own music and the material must be radio-ready and current. You must also have a full-length, completed CD project and an active website, in order to submit. This opportunity is fantastic for an artist trying to get invaluable radio promotion and far-reaching exposure. This show ONLY accepts submissions via TAXI. They want teen artists 16 years old and under. Vocal talent is a huge plus and submissions that showcase your musicianship are required. He is looking for bands that have already established at least a loyal local to regional following. Artists will be signed to a 360 deal including Record/Publishing/Touring. Lyrics need to sound authentic to the language and tone of the tween market. Mid to uptempo songs will get the most attention, as will songs with high quality recording. They specifically asked us to not send songs with corny lyrics! All of these songs referenced are thoughtful and reflective with beautiful underlying melodies. Examples they give range from College radio acts such as Fleet Foxes, Ben Iver, Okkerville River and Blitzen Trapper to acts with proven track records like The Old 97 s, Butch Walker, The Shins, Ryan Adams, The Jayhawks and Uncle Tupelo to Classic acts such as Gram Parsons, The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield. On top of that, they are asking for us to only send them artists whose careers are already in motion and just need a little extra push to take them to the top. That means you must have a strong history of DIY marketing, touring experience, and a growing fan base in order to be forwarded for this listing. Your bio must include references to stage/touring/sales history as well as links to performances or an active website. Additionally, the better quality of your demo, the better chance you have for being chosen for further consideration by this very picky label. Memorable hooks and great lyrical stories are needed. This artist is in her late teens (she first charted when she was just 12), so adult topics such as divorce, drinking, cheating, etc. aren t appropriate. All tempos are OK, but up-tempos are always preferred - they are looking for hits! Please submit 1-3 songs online or per CD, include lyrics. They have been in the studio recording and are still looking for hit songs, radio smashes with great harmony potential. Nothing less will be considered or forwarded on to the company. The label is looking to work with and develop new talent for overseas markets and is willing to see past rough demos for any "diamonds in the rough". They are looking for artists who are really strong singers (and don't necessarily write their own songs) as well as singer songwriters who do write their own material. They will be most interested in artists with very unique vocals and a marketable image for commercial appeal.
