Parkway Calabasas, Suite 200, Calabasas, CA Please call if you have problems or questions **************************************************************************************************************** Dear Passengers, Forty hours before Diane Warren was supposed to receive her Lifetime Achievement Award at this year s TAXI Road Rally, I got a call telling me that she was horribly sick and under strict orders from her doctor not to speak. Not a word! I literally felt like I was going to pass out cold. I knew that people were flying in from all over the world to share in the moment, and to hear Diane s keynote interview. A few weeks before, I had forwarded her a heartfelt from a lovely woman who recently lost her husband to Lou Gehrig s disease. She had lost her home, was scared to death of flying, but she was flying to Los Angeles just to hear Diane her hero! My world stopped, and all I could think of was how incredibly disappointed that woman would be. Not to mention the other 2,800 people who had registered for the Rally. I reached out to Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Kenny Loggins, Natasha Bedingfield, and many other possible replacements. Although some were willing to help, none of their schedules lined up with the opening slot. And then it hit me! Months in advance of the Rally, I was secretly planning to honor my friend, and legendary songwriting coach John Braheny, with a Lifetime Achievement Award on the last day of the Rally as a total surprise. I hadn t even told John s wife! I was just going to ask him to join me in the ballroom near the end of the event, and spring it on him. The twist in this story is that John had been diagnosed with prostate cancer prior to the Rally, and because he is undergoing chemotherapy, John was not able to attend the Rally this year! I reached out to John, and told him about the surprise, and asked him if he would be able to accept his award via Skype, and do an interview during the time we were supposed to be honoring Diane and interviewing her. He graciously agreed! And then, as if by a miracle, I received word that Diane Warren wanted to come to the Rally because she didn t want to let anybody down, especially the lady who had lost her husband. She could come to accept the award, as long as she didn t speak and use her vocal chords. In other words, no interview. Her friend Marcia read us a few words from Diane. In the end, it was the most magical of Road Rally moments, ever! Diane came and delighted the audience by being a real trooper and honoring her commitment. And when she left the stage, we went live via Skype with John and did an incredible interview with him during the remaining time. There was not a dry eye in the house, including mine! Especially mine!! The love and admiration in the ballroom that morning was off the chart. And the best part was that John told us the story of Diane s first steps in songwriting when she was merely fifteen years old. It all tied together so wonderfully the people in that ballroom will never forget Road Rally 2012! I d like to extend my heartfelt personal thanks to Diane for not disappointing our members and guests especially the lady who came against all odds just to see her. You were our lucky charm last Friday morning Rita. As for John he s continuing his fight, and all of us at TAXI send him our love and prayers as he continues to heal. I know that many of you reading this know John personally and want to join us in wishing him well. Please don t send him any personal s or call him (his request)! Post your warm wishes on his Facebook page, and give him the space he needs to continue his healing. Thank you for respecting that! The entire Road Rally turned out great this year. I want to thank my incredible staff, our panelists, teachers, mentors, volunteers, and sponsors for making sure that the best event of its kind also remains the only one that is free. And thank you to all of you who came from all over the world to learn, share, and grow. Your generosity to fellow attendees and commitment to your craft are exactly what we experienced courtesy of Diane Warren and John Braheny this past weekend.
