12 SEMINARS Seminars in Ethnomusicology and Sound Studies All seminars will take place at pm in the St John s College Barn (near where St Giles meets Banbury Road). There will be a wine reception after each talk. Free admission open to the public. Michaelmas Term 2017 Thursday 12 October 2017 (Week 1) Luis-Manuel Garcia (University of Birmingham) The Call: Interpellation and the Ethical Turn in Electronic Dance Music Recently, electronic dance music (EDM) discourse in cities around the globe has shown an increasing interest in rediscovering the genre s roots in subaltern communities. In this paper I track the call to ethical action in EDM communities in Berlin, attending to the various forms the call takes as nightlife organisers summon dancer-listeners to political engagement. Such appeals manifest as musical invocations, sonic conjurations, verbal appellations, and visual demonstrations. I use Althusser s notion of interpellation to highlight the coercive ideological force of the call as well as its impact on subjectivity. This paper provides an account of this emerging appellative practice, which seeks to reshape audiences by hailing them as political subjects. Luis-Manuel Garcia is Lecturer in Ethnomusicology and Popular Music Studies in the Department of Music at the University of Birmingham. His principal research is on electronic dance music scenes (e.g. house, techno, etc.), with a special focus on issues of affect, sexuality, tourism, and the creative industries. Thursday 19 October 2017 (Week 2) Mark Katz (University of North Carolina) Music as Technology In this lecture I argue that technology does not stand apart from music, influencing it from the outside, but is a part of music, integral to every aspect of musical activity and musical life. Technology has been a part of human music-making since at least the Paleolithic Age. In fact, history has no record of a pre-technological age of music. Humans are, and have always been, creatures of technology and of music. If we want to understand how music is made and experienced, if we want to know how music travels and how it gains meaning in human societies, we must investigate its relationship - ancient and inextricable - with technology. Mark Katz, Ph.D., is the Ruel W. Tyson Jr. Distinguished Professor of the Humanities and the Director of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A scholar of music technology, popular music, and musical diplomacy, he is the author of Capturing Sound: How Technology has Changed Music and Groove Music: The Art and Culture of the Hip-Hop DJ.
