7 The UHD Appoach How do you get motivated to put in the time needed? With ou imited eheasa time and eveyone s busy schedues, individua pactice time is vey impotant. Each of you needs to find the motivation to pactice eveyday. What is it that wi push you to get bette eveyday? OVE This is the best motivation you can have. Many goups (not just dumines) have found when eveyone tuy oves each othe, that ove fo each othe wi be a vey stong and effective motivato. ove wi make you sacifice pesona goy and comfot fo goup and team goas. Get to the point whee the eason you want to pay we is so you don t make the othes in you section ook bad. Have pide fo yousef and fo you feow pecussionists. Some of the best fiends you eve make wi be in this dumine. If ove fo each othe becomes you motivation this yea, then we wi have a vey good season. EPESENT Think about this. Wheneve we pay, I want you to show that emotion at a times. Gone ae the days when the dumine stands, pays ike obots and goes though the motions. 9 How to Pactice Pactice does not make pefect, pefect pactice makes pefect. -Vince ombadi Pactice as fast as you can pay each piece pefecty. Once you have found the tempo that you can pay pefecty at, epeat 20 times befoe going faste and then epeat the pocess. Pay in Tempo Pecussionists ae usuay the keepes of time in the band. In ode to have a steady intena puse you can count on, AWAYS pactice with a metonome. Thee s an app fo that, as we as numeous websites. Most music payed on the adio is payed with a metonome, so that can be used in a pinch as we. Piow Tak The fastest way to buid chops is to pay on a suface that gives you no ebound. The best thing I have found is a piow. Paying on a piow eveyday wi incease you chops moe than if you just used a pactice pad. Set Goas, Keep a Jouna Fo each pactice session, have a goa. To maximize you pactice time, set daiy goas, weeky goas and ong-tem goas. At each session, wite down what you woked on and at what tempos. This wi keep you oganized and maximize the effectiveness of you pactice sessions.

Stick paths shoud be pependicua to the paying suface with the fat pat of the bead o maet stiking the dumhead. Sound Quaity Ty to get the most sound out of the dum at any dynamic eve as efficienty as possibe. Be as eaxed as possibe when paying. Thee shoud be vey itte tension in the body whie paying. Pay with weight and et the sticks do the wok. A matue sound quaity is achieved with pope pepaation and an emotiona connection to the music being made. epetition and a commitment to the music wi make you sound awesome Attitude Be quiet, attentive, focused, and diven. Be as pepaed as possibe mentay and physicay fo evey eheasa and pefomance. Evey singe note you pay shoud be payed to the best of you abiity.

Face of detemination and eyes up, open, and away Feet Position 1st position is when you hees ae togethe and the inside of you foot is 45 degees fom whee you hees meet, ike shown in the diagam. This is what you feet shoud ook ike fo set position. 2nd position (tuned out) is when you hees and feet ae shoude width apat but sti keeping the 45 degees fom the cente ike fist position. An exampe is in the diagam beow.

12 Making Time Time is maked whee the ea haf of the foot eaves the gound (2 inches fom the hee) and the patfom of the foot emains on the gound. The foot stikes the gound on the downbeat. Fo 4/4 time, the eft foot stikes the gound on beats 1 and, whie the ight foot stikes the gound on beats 2 and 4. Thee is minima to no movement of the uppe haf of the body, whie you knees in you owe haf shoud move natuay. These haves shoud be isoated and movement of one shoud not affect the othe.

13 UHD Snae Technique ight Hand Gip The pam of the ight hand wi be facing the foo at set position. The thumb wi be paced on the eft side of the dumstick opposite of the index finge. The thumb and the index finge wi seve as you fucum at a times. The midde, ing and pinky finges wi stay fim and eaxed on the stick. eft Hand Gip et the dumstick est between the thumb and the index finge and aso est on the cutice of the ing finge. Cose the thumb by pessing it against the midde phaanx of the index finge. The midde finge and pinky wi seve as suppot to the index and inge finge and shoud neve sepaate fom each othe whie paying.

14 Motion ight Hand The basic egato stoke motion of the ight hand esembes a knocking type of motion whee the wist is being used to deive the paying stoke. The am and hand stay eaxed as the am is used as weight behind the stoke. Afte the stoke is payed, the wist woud be used to absob the ebound and/o snap the stick back down to the dumhead. As diffeent udiments come into pay, the use of the wist stays consistent, but the am and use of hands may incease o decease depending on both udiments and dynamics incopoated. eft Hand The basic egato stoke motion of the eft hand incopoates stong wist tun and foce fom the thumb and index finge. The am pays as a suppot to dive the wist tun towad the dumhead. The dumstick shoud stay consist with a staight up and down motion mioing the ight hand dumstick. Same as the ight hand, when diffeent udiments and dynamics come into pay, the am and hand shoud stay eaxed and suppot the motion of the wist. Paying Position At set position, the sticks wi be in and paae to the gound. Keep the dum sticks hoveed about an inch above the im of the dum cosest to you. Keep both ams eaxed and have ams in the same position as the paying position. Aways keep the body eaxed and stong as it keeps us eady fo any type of movement and to snap back into paying position. Fo best quaity sound, aways have the beads of the dumstick stike the cente of the snae dum to pu out the sounds fom the dumhead and the guts. In ode to achieve an idea positioning ove the dum, wok fom the beads of the stick backwads up to the shoudes. The shoudes shoud be vey eaxed to avoid tansfeing tension whie sti maintaining coect postue.

15 UHD Quad Technique Gip You thumb and index finge connect appoximatey 1/ fom the bottom of the stick. You thumb wi un paae with the stick. Make sue thee ae no gaps between the foefinge and the thumb. The est of the finges ae wapped natuay aound the stick. Keep these finges on the stick at a times. The butt of the stick shoud be visibe out of the back of you hand. Ams shoud be natuay daped down without esting against the body. Avoid pushing the ebow up as it ceates unnecessay tension in the uppe body. The hand shoud be otated sighty outwad in eationship to the dum. The hand shoud not be competey fat to the dum [Geman gip], no otated competey vetica [Fench Gip], as these tend to hinde use of finge motion and wist motion espectivey.

16 Motion Movement shoud be 60 wist, 0 am, and 10 finges. You shoud stat with you wist foowed by you am then you finges at the top of the stoke. Then you shoud push the stick into the dum and imagine you ae pushing with you pointe finge knucke. Then et the stick ebound fo itsef, as opposed to picking the stick up. Do not et the stick connect with the pam of you hand unti you ae eady to stop the stick because this wi stop the enegy of the stick and stop the natua ebound. Paying Position In ode to achieve an idea positioning ove the dum, wok fom the beads of the stick backwads up to the shoudes. Geneay, dum height is detemined by the eft foeam being SIGHTY anged downwad, but wi be adjusted on a case-by-case basis this wi affect you positioning on both ight and eft ams. The shoudes shoud be vey eaxed to avoid tansating tension whie sti maintaining coect postue ( soft shoudes ). Fom the shoudes to the bead shoud be downhi at a times. Paying aeas ae 1-2 away fom bottom of the 1 st and 2 nd dums and on the top-eft/ight cone of the d and 4 th dums. This paying aea has sevea advantages: - Off-cente paying aows the dum to esonate moe, simia to a timpani technique. A fu esonant sound pojects bette on the fied and heps cut though the ensembe - Paying cose-in aows fo easie paying, educing the distance between the dums Sticks out to the 1 and 2 dums THEN to the dums witten in the music. When moving veticay acoss the dum, imagine you ae paying in a staight ine as opposed puing you ams back to pay on the owe dums. Movement between the dums ae initiated at the ebow NOT THE WIST. When paying scapes the wist ony moves veticay (egato stoke) and does not move hoizontay fom dum to dum

18 UHD Bass Technique Gip Just ike the snae and teno, technique begins at the fucum, between the fist ine on the index finge and the thumb on both hands. Finges shoud wap about the stick fimy but not tighty. Thee shoud be itte to no space between the thumb and the hand. The butt of the stick shoud potude about a ½ inch fom the bottom of you hand. The fu ength of the maet wi give maximum veocity fo maximum esonance, voume, and conto. Motion Movement shoud come 50 fom wist, 0 fom finges, and 20 fom am. This distibution may change with udimenta and dynamic changes, but geneay fo egato eights, this wi be it. The wist wi make a doo knocking motion, NOT a doo-knob tuning motion. This wi give moe conto and geate powe in paying. The stick shoud be making a pathway pefecty pependicua to the dum. Immediatey afte contact between the maet and the dumhead, the bead of the maet shoud snap back into paying position, simiay to if an eastic ubbe band wee to be attached to the head of the dum and the bead of the stick. This means that the ebound of the hit must be contoed.

19 Paying Position Ams wi be paae to the gound with the thumbs upwad. The dum shoud be adjusted so that when the maet is 0 above the hoizonta, the bead of the maet is ight in the cente of the dum. Depending on the dum size and the individua s am ength, the individua may need to push o pu thei ebows fowad o back. Make sue the esting maet does not foat out whie the othe is paying. Thee shoud be a sight inwad ange fom the ebow to the bead of the maet in ode to pevent this and keep a cean unifomed ook. When not paying, the bead of the maet shoud be a 1/2 inch away fom the head. Muffed notes ae ceated by keeping the fucum whie appying pessue to the head with the bottom finges, amost aways on the eft hand. Since bass payes mach facing the goa posts on the fied, head shoud be tuned 45 towads the font and eyes shoud be ooking at the 90 ange hoizontay and 10 above hoizonta. Set Position Fom the paying position, bing the ams up veticay unti it is as high as possibe whie sti being eaxed at the shoudes. With pope gip, the hands wi be on the im of the dum, with the maets veticay up and pependicua to the gound. Hands wi est on im without gabbing it. Set Position im Cicks

20 im cicks im cicks wi be hit on the im save on eithe side of the dum depending on the music. Use the shaft aea about haf an inch to an inch beow the bead of the maet to stike the im save. Edge paying Edge paying shoud be in the hoizonta cente and about the top 1/6 th of the dumhead veticay. In context Technique in the bassine does not change down the ine. The ony thing that may be diffeent is whee the ebows ae hoizonta. Othe than that, gip, hand/am pacement, and movement shoud a be the same. The body shoud fee eaxed and shoud not fee uncomfotabe o any tension. A good, confident postue is key to paying in any maching dumine.
