I the followig pages, the librarias who have built ad ow maage these collectios provide isight ito the value ad sigificace of the treasures i their charge.

Origially, collectios cosisted of books ad periodicals. Today, all sorts of ew resources are available, ad library users wat access to them. The libraries face the challege of meetig the research ad teachig eeds of the Uiversity while uderstadig chages i the academic eviromet that affect every aspect of library operatios. Electroic Cotet Producers of books ad jourals have icreasigly made their cotet available olie. These resources seem freely available to library users but, i fact, ca be very expesive to acquire. Through the libraries electroic collectios, studets ad faculty have access to more tha 30,000 periodical titles as well as to primary research resources such as Early America Imprits olie, ad the New York Times archive. With this uprecedeted availability of published iformatio come questios of how to maitai or preserve electroic access ad how to meet users risig expectatios for what the libraries should provide. This cooperatio icludes usig fuds i the Columbia Libraries budget to support access to electroic resources at the regioal campuses. Eve as the Uiversity admiistratio has cosistetly recogized the eed to acquire icreasigly expesive resources, the libraries developmet officers ad the Uiversity s Educatioal Foudatio have worked to raise moey to supplemet Uiversity fudig. At preset, the Uiversity Libraries are supported by about 75 edowmet fuds, which beefit all areas of academic edeavor. I , the libraries were able to acquire about 50 titles, icludig the Web versio of the Dictioary of Natioal Biography with fuds eared by the Katharie Otis ad Bruce Oswald Hut Biography Edowmet ad about 90 titles, icludig works of literature ad museum catalogs, with the Doa Sorese Edowmet: Souther Wome i the Arts. Thomas Cooper Library Referece, Sciece, Math Virgiia Weathers The Thomas Cooper Library Referece Collectio houses approximately 14,000 titles i prit plus may olie referece databases. We make a cocerted effort to reach out to the eeds of our users from our freshme to the advaced researchers o campus, ad we have a wide rage of sources to cover these eeds. Other stadard sources iclude the Ecyclopedia Judaica, the Europa Yearbook, ad may coutry ecyclopedias ad historical dictioaries. We have substatial resources about Africa-America history, a extesive collectio of literature referece works, ad a wide variety of subject ecyclopedias ad hadbooks. Oxford Referece Olie Premium, our most recet referece works package, provides olie access to more tha 150 Oxford referece dictioaries ad compaios coverig most subject areas as well as foreig laguage dictioaries. Sciece Resources The sciece referece collectio icludes a variety of subject ecyclopedias ad dictioaries, as well as stadard referece works such as the CRC hadbooks, the Kirk-Othmer Ecyclopedia of Chemical Techology, ad the U.S. Pharmacopeia. South Caroliiaa Library Visual Materials Divisio Beth Bilderback Photographs, artwork, ad other visual materials ofte are the stepchildre of archives ad mauscript repositories. Some archivists may ot kow how to care for or catalogue these materials properly, so they are quietly put aside. Researchers regularly igore visual materials util it is time to decide o pretty pictures for their books ad presetatios. Aother difficulty posed by these types of materials, especially photographs, is that archival preservatio best practices may chage i as little as five years. South Carolia Voices With more tha 1,000 hours of recordigs, the Oral History Program provides the meas for researchers to hear the actual voices of the people whose memories, reflectios, ad experieces comprise the record of South Carolia. As curator, I mediate betwee the techical expertise required to geerate images from age 80+ yearold itrate egatives ad the evidetially based historical method that poses questios to that film. Icreasigly, that role requires Newsfilm Library staff members to explore ew digital techologies as the primary mode of access. Ulike the case with video, however, this ew frotier holds a promise of capturig more of the historical iformatio o the Fox egatives to the beefit of Uiversity faculty ad studets usig the film collectios. 11 Librarias Talk About the Library Collectios South Carolia Political Collectios Herb Hartsook Oe of my great joys over the past 16 years has bee watchig the growth of South Carolia Political Collectios holdigs. Whe the divisio was created, we held 13 collectios trasferred from the South Caroliiaa Library s Mauscripts Divisio. Today we hold more tha 80 collectios documetig all levels of govermet ad political activity i the state, Democratic ad Republica. The breadth of our holdigs is oe of the hallmarks of our atioal reputatio as a leadig legislative papers repository. Research Requires Access We process most of our acquisitios i a timely fashio ad arrage ad describe all of our holdigs at the folder level. Our work is completed by experieced archivists or by studets uder close supervisio. Our work makes these large ad complex collectios as user-friedly as possible. We are committed to this high level of processig eve as the archival professio has begu promotig alterative, less detailed, processig protocols to help elimiate the backlogs so commo at some istitutios. For example, studets ca lear the theory of cosumer behavior, i additio to the best practices for sellig real estate. Havig the library housed i the same buildig with faculty ad studets who are teachig ad coductig research i the field allows for a woderful syergy, sice the collectio itself ad subject-specialist librarias ca easily iteract with the primary users of the materials. Arthur E. Holma Jr. Coservatio Laboratory Holly Herro While the Arthur E. Holma Jr. Coservatio Laboratory does ot hold ay collectios per se, it provides exceptioal care for the rare ad special collectios of the Uiversity Libraries, thus eablig their use by researchers. Lab staff members are traied to work with a wide variety of materials, icludig mauscripts, boud items, works of art o paper, photographs, ad cartographic materials. They execute a vast array of treatmets, such as surface cleaig ad mold removal, removal of tape ad stais, humidificatio, washig ad liig, text block repair, coservatio of bidigs, leaf castig, ad Japaese paper repair. Recet Projects The lab completed several projects this year, which required may or all of the complex processes metioed above. Staff members washed, re-sewed, ad reboud several volumes from the South Caroliiaa Library s Mauscripts Divisio, icludig William Acrum s Accout Book ad Letterbook, Two volumes received ew leather cases, which were had decorated usig the lab s large collectio of fiishig tools. While tears i most mauscripts were meticulously meded usig delicate, had-toed Japaese paper, a recetly coserved 1829 accout book was leaf cast. This procedure uses a specialized machie to fill large holes ad rips with paper pulp. Staff members also costruct custom eclosures ragig from ecapsulatio ad mat packages, to clamshell boxes ad post-bidigs. The Uiversity Libraries ow 3,180,111 books ad serial volumes, 937,420 govermet documets, ad 323,412 maps. Researchers i the libraries have access to more tha 300 electroic databases ad 250 computer workstatios. The libraries olie catalog received more tha 2,816,000 requests durig the year. The libraries provide servers that allow remote access to all Uiversity faculty, studets, ad staff members doig offcampus research. Durig the year, staff members received ad cataloged a total of 38,278 items for the Columbia campus ad 156,193 items for the other Uiversity campuses. Total expeditures for these materials (which icluded books, periodicals, electroic databases, ewspapers, microforms, videos, soud recordigs, ad mauscripts) amouted to $6,153,249 durig More tha 1 millio visitors were welcomed to the libraries this year. A total of more tha 250,000 items were checked out by users durig the year. Studets flock to Thomas Cooper Library s ew study areas especially durig exams. Thomas Cooper Library The library s referece librarias aswered more tha 125,000 referece questios, hadled more tha 1,290 referece trasactios, ad egaged i chat-referece sessios with about 500 patros durig the year. Referece librarias coducted 315 library istructio sessios, reachig 6,279 studets durig the year. They also taught 160 Uiversity 101 sessios to 2,649 studets. Referece librarias taught LIBR 100, a itroductory research course, to 61 studets durig the year. Iterlibrary Loa staff members borrowed 16,476 items for patros o the Columbia campus ad 2,257 items for patros at the other Uiversity of South Carolia campuses. A total of 17,735 items were loaed to other istitutios ad 1,947 items were loaed to other Uiversity campuses. Iterlibrary Loa staff members also delivered 8,364 articles electroically to patros desktops ad set 839 articles through the ew sca ad deliver service lauched i the sprig semester. The Departmet of Govermet Iformatio, Microforms, Newspapers, ad Maps provided iformatio to about 10,000 patros durig the year ad aswered about 27,500 referece questios. The departmet added 5,726 ew items from the Govermet Pritig Office as well as 15,000 items discarded from other South Carolia depositories. A total of 2,371 superseded items were withdraw ad 26,404 rarely used items were set to the Library Aex. Olie databases provide a major resource for studets ad faculty. The library s microforms collectio grew by 29,993 pieces durig the year. About 1,900 items were moved from the Map Collectio to the Library Aex. The Map Library s collectios are the most used digital collectios. The Library s Educatioal Films Collectio ows a total of 6,500 films ad videos. About 350 ew films were added this year Rare Books ad Special Collectios Rare Books ad Special Collectios ows ad cares for a collectio of more tha 126,456 items valued at about $175 millio. Durig the year, Rare Books staff members cataloged ad added 11,903 items to the collectios. Durig the year, SCPC received 91 visits from researchers who requested 304,953 documets from 29 differet collectios, vertical files, ad oral history trascripts. Elliott White Sprigs Busiess Library Elliott White Sprigs Busiess Library staff members aswered several hudred referece questios ad provided about 50 bibliographic istructio sessios to busiess studets durig the year. The busiess library provides more tha 30 computer workstatios for studet research. The library has o display a uique collectio of James Thurber drawigs featurig the Sprigmaid logo, which was used extesively i Sprig Cotto Mills advertisemets. Library Aex Durig the academic year, the Library Aex staff accessed 54,888 items for storage, processed 8,177 patro requests, re-filed 7,623 items, processed 26 items for permaet withdrawal, ad delivered 1,835 articles via the Electroic Desktop Delivery service for a total of 18,435 pages scaed. 30 Buildigs New Special Collectios Buildig Plas for the buildig of a ew special collectios library for the Uiversity were revised from the costructio of two wigs o the east ad west sides of the Thomas Cooper Library to a sigle additio to be located south of the Cooper library. The buildig will house Rare Books ad Special Collectios, as well as South Carolia Political Collectios. This chage was decided upo i order to achieve eeded ecoomies ad produce a more efficiet buildig through shared spaces, such as a readig room ad a major evets area. The ew additio will provide attractive space for such departmetal activities as exhibits, teachig, public programs, ad digital projects.
