4 Published bk awards General eligibility criteria This general eligibility criteria shuld be read in cnjunctin with the categry specific criteria. Eligible wrks must be First published and ffered fr general sale in Australia between, and including, 01 June 2017 and 31 May Please nte bks with a trade publicatin date f June 2018 that have stck released early fr selective prmtinal events, such as literary festivals, are nt eligible fr entry in the 2018 awards. These titles shuld be entered in the 2019 awards. Frmally published in bk frm (print) with an Internatinal Standard Bk Number (ISBN) r frmally published electrnically with an Internatinal Standard Bk Number (ISBN). Self-published bks in print with an Internatinal Standard Bk Number (ISBN) r self-published electrnic bks with an Internatinal Standard Bk Number (ISBN) are eligible fr entry. First published in English. Primarily wrks f text (except in the children s bk categry). Wrks cnsisting primarily f images, pictures, phtgraphs r illustratins are ineligible unless the accmpanying text is judged t be f sufficient merit. T be eligible, authrs (including all c-authrs, c-creatrs and illustratrs) must be Australian citizens r permanent residents f Australia (fr a minimum perid f three years prir t the clsing date fr nminatins). At least 18 years f age, r prvide written cnsent frm a parent r guardian t nminate. Living at the date f nminatin. In the case f recently deceased authrs, the prize mney ges t the rights hlder f the literary estate r in cases where this is nt able t be determined, t the publisher, t be distributed t the rights hlder nce they are identified (fr example, as with ryalty payments). Other eligibility infrmatin All eligible nminatins must include a cmpleted nline nminatin frm, payment f the nminatin fee ($50 per nminatin) and the submissin f five cpies f the nminated bk in published bk frm. Digital bk files (eg. epub, mbi etc) are nly accepted fr electrnic and Internet-nly publicatins. There is n limit t the number f published titles by the same authr that may be nminated, prvided that each bk meets all relevant eligibility requirements. A nminatin frm, entry fee and five cpies f the nminated wrk must accmpany each nminatin. The same title may be submitted t multiple categries if eligible, but a separate nminatin frm, entry fee and five cpies f the nminated wrk must be prvided fr each nminatin in each categry. 4.

5 Bks may be submitted by authrs, publishers, literary agents r interested third parties. Hwever, any third party nminating bks n behalf f an authr is respnsible fr ensuring and demnstrating, if requested, that the authr's cnsent has been btained prir t the nminatin. Oral histries, translated texts, and pamphlet publicatins are generally ineligible fr these awards, unless stated therwise fr specific categries. Wrks f c-authrship are eligible except in the categries fr petry and shrt stries. C-authrship is defined as jint respnsibility by tw r mre authrs fr the entire wrk. If the winning nminatin is a c-authred wrk, all eligible authrs will receive the award and share equally the prize mney. Anthlgies, jurnals r bks cmpiled by an editr, cmmittee, rganisatin r authr cnsisting principally f cntributins frm a number f writers are ineligible. Categry specific criteria Nminatins in the published bk categries must cmply with bth the general eligibility criteria listed abve, and t the categry specific criteria. Queensland Premier's Award fr a Wrk f State Significance Eligible wrks shuld have cntent primarily fcused n imprtant Queensland stries, histry r vices. A wrk by a Queensland authr culd als be deemed f state significance if it has increased awareness and prfile f Queensland writing. Wrks in all genres, including plays, are eligible in this categry. Judges will be seeking t award this prize t the nminatin f the highest literary merit, telling a significant Queensland stry. The University f Queensland Fictin Bk Award Histrical fictin and fictinalised memirs are eligible fr this categry. Shrt stry cllectins are nt eligible fr this categry. Shrt stry cllectins by a single authr shuld be nminated in the University f Suthern Queensland Shrt Stry Cllectin Steele Rudd Award. The University f Queensland Nn-Fictin Bk Award Eligible nn-fictin wrks include: bigraphies, autbigraphies and memir, histries, philsphy, literary criticism, science writing bks, and wrks dealing with cntemprary issues. Oral histries are nt eligible unless the authr claims artistic respnsibility fr the majrity f the text. Griffith University Yung Adult Bk Award Eligible wrks must be suitable fr yung adult readers 13 t 19 years f age. Griffith University Children s Bk Award Eligible wrks must be suitable fr children under 12 years f age. 5.

6 Wrdless picture bks r illustrated narratives are eligible fr nminatin in this categry. In the case f illustrated picture bks, this prize equally awards the authr and the illustratr. Bth the authr and illustratr must meet the general eligibility criteria. The authr and illustratr will jintly win the award and share equally the prize mney. If the winning wrk has been c-authred by tw r mre authrs they will jintly win the award with the illustratr and each will share equally the prize mney. University f Suthern Queensland Histry Bk Award Wrks with a fcus n the histry f Australia s First Peples will be highly regarded. Fr the purpses f this award, a Queensland authr is smene wh has lived in Queensland fr at least the past three years r is a Queensland-brn authr wh cntinues t strngly identify with the state. The QLA judges select the shrtlist frm the eligible nminatins. The public then vtes fr their favurite shrtlisted bk t determine the winner. The nminatin which receives the mst vtes wins the prize. 7 QUT Digital Literature Award The QUT Digital Literature Award shwcases innvatin and creativity in strytelling fr digital media, and new directins in cntemprary literary practice infrmed by technlgy. This award is pen t all riginal wrks f digital literature (fictin, nn-fictin, petry, graphic narrative) which are purpse-designed fr digital cnsumptin. Eligibility criteria All nminatins fr the QUT Digital Literature Award must meet the fllwing criteria t be eligible: Nminated wrks must be First published r publically released r available t public audiences fr the first time between (and including) 01 June 2016 and 31 May Please nte the eligibility perid has been expanded frm 12 mnths t 24 mnths prir t the awards clsing date. Nminatins that were entered in the 2017 QUT Digital Literature Award are nt eligible fr re-entry. Fr the purpses f this Award, Beta testing and public shwing f a substantial amunt f the wrk fr develpment is cnsidered published r publicly released. First published r publically released in English. Original literary r narrative artistic wrk where stry is the central purpse f the wrk (as ppsed t gameplay, interface, r design). A narrative-based wrk that relies n the unique capabilities f digital media. This may include innvative use f digital media in creatin f the narrative r use f digital media t present the wrk t readers (e.g. thrugh screen-based r ther digital frmats). Wrks that are primarily inftainment, principally designed fr educatin r training, principally designed fr marketing and prmtinal campaigns, r branding are nt eligible. Text-nly prse narratives that have been cnverted t a screen-frmat withut designing fr interactive features r digital cntexts (e.g. standard text-nly e-bks) are nt eligible. All authrs and creatrs, including c-authrs r c-creatrs, f the narrative must be Australian citizens r permanent residents f Australia (fr a minimum perid f three years prir t the clsing date fr nminatins). 9 Queensland Premier's Yung Publishers and Writers Awards In supprt f fstering the next generatin f Queensland writers, the Queensland Premier's Yung Publishers and Writers Awards seek t celebrate and reward strng yung Queensland vices. These awards are pen t prfessinal Queensland-based writers and publishers up t 30 years f age with a steady publishing histry. Tw winners will be awarded in this categry, each receiving a prize f $10,000 and career develpment supprt t the value f $2,500 each. The judges are seeking t award these prizes t yung Queensland writers wh exhibit high quality writing, a track recrd f publicatin utcmes and a cmmitment t develping and sustaining an nging career as a writer. Judges are als seeking t recgnise yung publishers and/r cultural prducers with a track recrd f successful prductins that demnstrate a cmmitment t creating avenues t publish and prmte Queensland literature, and wh have a cmmitment t develping a career r creative enterprise in the literary sectr. Eligibility criteria All nminatins fr the Queensland Premier's Yung Publishers and Writers Awards must meet the fllwing criteria t be eligible. Nminated writers must be A current Queensland resident (fr at least three years prir t their nminatin). Five (5) shrt wrks f fictin r nn-fictin (minimum 100 wrds each) published in prfessinal literary jurnals, edited anthlgies, majr newspapers r natinal magazines (print and nline accepted). Ten (10) pems published in prfessinal literary jurnals, edited anthlgies, majr newspapers r natinal magazines (print and nline accepted). An nline blg which has existed fr at least tw years, with evidence f a wide fllwing and regular (at least mnthly) new cntent. Examples may include, but are nt limited t, small press publicatins, electrnic jurnals, zines, pdcast series, live literature perfrmances. Other award infrmatin There is n nminatin fee fr these awards. Only individuals are eligible t enter and receive these awards. Fr writers: all wrk submitted fr this award must be riginal wrks, slely written by the nminee. C-authred wrks are nt eligible in this categry. Fr publishers: while examples f prduced wrks submitted fr this award may have been c-prduced, nly individuals may receive an award, nt partnerships, cllectives, grups r assciatins. Awards may nt be shared. Writing can be in any literary categry including nvels, shrt stries and/r pems, wrks fr children, bigraphies and memirs, plays and scripts, r ther nn-fictin wrks including jurnalism. Cmics and graphic nvels are eligible in this categry if there is sufficient text and writing included that it is an integral part f the wrk. Questins f eligibility will be reslved at the discretin f the judging panel. The dcuments and materials submitted fr judging will nt be returned. Writers currently funded thrugh the Queensland Writers Fellwship prgram are nt eligible fr these awards. 11 Queensland Writers Fellwships Queensland Writers Fellwships prvide supprt fr utstanding Queensland authrs t develp a writing prject ver a 12 mnth perid. Three (3) Fellwships f $15,000 will be awarded in Eligibility criteria All nminatins fr the Queensland Writers Fellwships must meet the fllwing criteria t be eligible. Eligible authrs must be A Queenslander; eligible authrs must have lived in Queensland fr at least the past three (3) years r be a Queensland-brn writer wh lives elsewhere, but can demnstrate cntinuing strng ties with the state. Cmmitted t develping an individual writing prject tward publicatin r ther significant utcme ver 12 mnths; cllabrative prjects/wrks are nt eligible, except illustrated children s bks. Yur applicatin must include a cmpleted applicatin frm that includes a prpsal and prject plan and clearly identifies the key prject utcmes acrss the full 12 mnth Fellwship (January December 2019) and hw yu will achieve them. Publicatin histry Eligible applicants must be able t demnstrate a track recrd f wrk as a develping r established authr with a strng publicatin histry. Applicants must be able t demnstrate at least ne r a cmbinatin f the fllwing publicatin utcmes t be eligible: One (1) full-length published bk fr adults, yung adults r children. Self-published wrks must be frmally published in bk frm (print) with an Internatinal Standard Bk Number (ISBN) r published electrnically with an Internatinal Standard Bk Number (ISBN). Seven (7) shrt wrks f fictin r literary nn-fictin (minimum 1,000 wrds each) published in prfessinal literary jurnals, edited anthlgies, majr newspapers, r natinal magazines. Fifteen (15) pems published in prfessinal literary jurnals, edited anthlgies, majr newspapers, r natinal magazines. A full length perfrmance script (theatre r film) which has premiered in Australia. Assessment Criteria The fellwship prgram aims t supprt Queensland authrs in achieving psitive utcmes. Applicatins will be assessed against the fllwing criteria: Quality and uniqueness f the prpsed prject. Viability f prject plan and likelihd f achieving prpsed utcmes. Impact f the Fellwship n the applicant s writing career. 11.

12 Award infrmatin There is n nminatin fee fr these Fellwships. Prjects that frm part f frmal tertiary studies are nt eligible fr these Fellwships. Prjects that have already been accepted (r cmmissined fr example, in the case f a series f bks) by a publisher are nt eligible fr these Fellwships. Applicatins will be checked fr eligibility by State Library f Queensland staff, and then frwarded t a panel f judges fr assessment and recmmendatins. The judging panel cmprises a mix f writers, critics, academics, publishers and literary sectr prfessinals. The utcmes f the judging prcess are final and n discussin r crrespndence will be entered int regarding the final decisins r the judging prcess. Submitting yur applicatin: Applicatins must be submitted in line with the requirements utlined in the 'Hw t submit yur nminatin' sectin. 13 Unpublished Indigenus Writer David Unaipn Award David Unaipn was the first Abriginal authr t be published. He was als an early plitical activist, a scientist, a preacher, and an inventr. David Unaipn was brn in Pint McLeay (Raukkan) in Suth Australia and is cmmemrated n the $50 nte. This award is pen t all unpublished Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander writers thse wh are f Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander descent, wh identify as Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander, and wh are accepted as such by the cmmunities in which they live r have lived r wrked. The winner f the award receives $15,000 and the ffer f a publishing cntract with the University f Queensland Press (UQP). The David Unaipn Award is spnsred by the Cpyright Agency Cultural Fund and supprted by the University f Queensland Press. Eligibility criteria All nminatins fr the David Unaipn Award must meet the fllwing criteria t be eligible fr the award. Nminated writers must be An Abriginal persn r Trres Strait Islander persn. Unpublished this is understd t mean that the manuscript cannt have been previusly published, r self-published, with an ISBN in print r electrnic frm n a cmmercial basis (publicatin f up t 10 per cent f the manuscript will be accepted). The manuscript must nt be currently entered in ther writing cmpetitins, r under submissin t a publisher, r subject t cntractual negtiatins. Manuscripts previusly nminated in this categry are eligible fr re-nminatin. 20 The judging prcess Wh assesses the nminatins? Each categry is assessed by a panel f independent judges, with a minimum f three judges assigned t each categry. Judges are invited by State Library f Queensland n a three-year term, and are subject t an internal vetting prcess. Panels are made up f a mix f authrs, critics, academics, publishers, media prfessinals, editrs, librarians, reviewers, teachers, arts rganisatin representatives, bksellers and jurnalists. Members f the judging panels are listed n qldliteraryawards.rg.au What is the judging prcess? The eligibility f all nminatins will be checked by State Library f Queensland staff. All eligible nminatins will be frwarded t categry specific judging panels fr reading, shrtlisting and the selectin f winners in each categry. Judges will have eight weeks t read the nminatins, assess the merit f the wrk, meet and discuss the nminatins and decide n the finalists and winners. Queensland Literary Awards recgnise utstanding achievement by Australian writers. The judges will award the categry prize t the nminatin deemed t pssess the highest literary merit.
