Students will have had sme expsure t stry elements and will have written a few stries independently. The unit is designed arund fairy tales. In this unit, students will explre the features that define fairy tales. They will learn hw t recgnize fairy tales. Students will understand that fairy tales are fantasy. The students will listen, cmpare, and analyze the characters f fairy tales. Thrughut the unit students will develp their idea f happiness. Their understanding will deepen thrugh expsure and discussins. Students will als cnnect t the characters and think abut their wn happiness. Students will braden their understanding f happiness by cmparing fairy tales t real life. Students will be asked at the end f the unit t rewrite a traditinal fairy tale. Students will chse ne f three fairytales and change events and characters. Students will use the features f fairy tales in the writing alng with their understanding f happiness t demnstrate their learning. Their gal is with their new understanding f fairytales and happiness, they will be able t create a mre realistic fairy tale, true t themselves.
4 Unit: Happily Ever After? A Fairy Tale Unit Grade: 1 st Grade Stage 1: Desired Results Understandings Students will understand that Fairy tales have cmmn features such as ryalty, magic, happy endings, ect. Fairy tales are fantasy and unrealistic. Traditinal happiness is nt the nly way t be happy. 1. What makes a fairy tale a fairy tale? 2. Hw wuld the characters feel in real life? 3. What des it mean t live happily ever after? 4. Hw d I live happily? Essential Questins Knwledge Students will knw Definitin f happiness Cmmn features f fairy tales Skills Students will be able t 13D. cnnect ideas and themes acrss texts 14D. recgnize the distinguishing features f familiar genres, including stries, pems, and traditinal texts 14G. analyze characters, including their traits, feelings, relatinships, and changes 18F. write in different frms fr different purpses such as lists t recrd, letters t invite r thank, and stries r pems t entertain Stage 2: Assessment Evidence Perfrmance Task: Students will chse ne f three fairy tales after cnferencing with the teacher. Students will then rewrite the fairy tale t demnstrate their understanding f the features f fairy tales and the idea f happiness. Students will be assessed using a rubric. Tday we re ging t review ur fairy tales and yu will get t pick 3 that yu d like t change the ending t. (Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snw White, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk) Review fairy tale plts and use bks as a reminder t help students retell Fairy tales are fantasy-change it s it s mre like real life. Are the characters really living happily ever after? Wuld yu be happy if yu were the character? On yur wrksheet chse the 3 fairy tales yu wuld be the mst excited t change. Make sure yu think abut what yu might want t change in each fairy tale. Pick 3 that yu think yu culd really shw me what yu ve learned. Teacher will cnference with students t help chse ne fr their perfrmance task. Use cnference as a way t differentiate perfrmance task fr students Day 12: Perfrmance Task Teacher will finish student cnferences. Pass ut rubric and discuss elements with students. Remind students t make sure characters wuld be happy in real life Think abut what yu wuld want t change. Yu are the authr and yur are in charge! Pass ut changes wrksheet t help students rganize changes. When students finish they may begin filling ut fairy tale map wrksheet t help rganize thughts.
10 Day 13: Writing Students will begin writing new fairy tale using fairy tale.map as a guide. Teacher will cnference with students as they write. Day 14: Writing Students will cntinue t write and edit their fairy tale. Teacher will cntinue t cnference with students. Day 15: Illustrating Students will finish up writing and editing their fairy tale. Students will create illustratins fr their fairy tale if finished. Students can share fairy tales with each ther.
