Banned Book Week Celebrate the Freedom to Read Sept , 2014 Banned Books Week is the national book community's annual celebration of the freedom to read. Hundreds of libraries and bookstores around the country draw attention to the problem of censorship by mounting displays of challenged books. We invite you to be daring! Celebrate your Freedom to Read and take home a banned books this week. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982 according to the American Library Association. There were 307 challenges reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom in 2013, and many more go unreported. The 10 most challenged titles of 2013 were: 1. Captain Underpants (series), by Dav Pilkey Reasons: Offensive language, unsuited for age group, violence 2. The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison Reasons: Offensive language, sexually explicit, unsuited to age group, violence 3. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie Reasons: Drugs/alcohol/smoking, offensive language, racism, sexually explicit, unsuited to age group 4. 4 We are picking new colors for the library interior! The wall in Anna's Corner will be fixed, water damage and other repairs will be made, too. We want to swap the industrial gray on our walls with "Friendly Yello w" and we picked fun, bold colors to the Children's Department. Our inspiration is the Marybeth Summerlin Book Worm. What do you think? The new garden just needs mulch and a few more plants tolerant of the walnut tree (be careful, it's dropping nuts all over the place and I don't want anyone to slip or get hit on the head). Friends Book Club - "Members of the book discussion group do not have to members of the Friends. They just have to be passionate about reading and discussion." They meet in the multi-purpose room of the Library at 12:30 pm for lively discussion.
