1 E S T H E R V I L L E P U B L I C L I B R A R Y Federal Tax ID # January 2018 Volume 30, Issue 1 Quarterly Newsletter Sponsored by the Friends of the Peter Rabbit On Thursday February 8th, from 6:00-7:00 pm, children and their families are invited to a Peter Rabbit Program in the Community Room of the Estherville Public Library. Ashley Reed from Emmet County Conservation will do a rabbit presentation. Stories and activities will be offered as well. Meet the star of the Peter Rabbit book, Peter Rabbit, and have your photo taken. Refreshments provided. Children can enter a prize drawing at the event with the drawing taking place at 7 pm. Must be present to win. All are welcome to attend this free program. 2 U P C O M I N G E V E N T S Classic Movie Matinee The library will be hosting Library Movie Classics the last Wednesday of every month in the library community room. Each movie presentation starts at 1:30 pm. All movies include free popcorn. January 31st, Seems Like Old Times - Chevy Chase & Goldie Hawn. February 28th, Two Mules for Sister Sara - Shirley MacLaine & Clint Eastwood. March 28th, Hud - Paul Newman & Melvyn Douglas. Maker Mondays Open Craft Nights Open Craft Nights continue the first Monday of each month (except January, due to the holiday) at 6:30 PM. Bring your own project and enjoy 90 minutes of peaceful concentration and the company of fellow crafters. January: Recycled book mail holder January s project features recycled book mail organizers. All supplies are provided, and the color and size of both the wood pieces and the books will vary. This event takes place on Monday, January 22nd at 6:30 pm. Supplies are limited, so please contact the library at to register. (If you register and find that you can t attend, please call and let us know, as we often have a list of people waiting.) Page 2

3 UPCOMING EVENT Genealogy Series During the month of March, library staff will be hosting a mini genealogy series. We will be going over what the library has to offer and what resources can be found online. This is designed to help those who would like to start researching genealogy or renew their research skills. These sessions will be held at the library on Wednesdays from 10:30-11:30 am. Please bring along your library card in good standing. 4 ONGOING EVENTS Tinker Tuesdays This fall at Tinker Tuesday we have had an average of 20 participants at each session. They have experimented with wind, chemistry, and using hand tools from the library s maker cart. We have a group of active builders who use all of the KEVA planks each month. It is interesting to watch what the build each time. This free program is open to all K-6th graders on the second Tuesday of each month from 3:45 pm 5:00 pm. Upcoming programs are: Tuesday, January 9, 2018-Light Blox Tuesday, February 13, 2018-Shadow Play Tuesday, March 13, 2018-Milk Plastic Book Club This year s book selected for All Iowa Reads is The Boys in the Bunkhouse: Servitude and Salvation in the Heartland by Dan Barry published in This is a full-length story that chronicles the exploitation and abuse of a group of developmentally disabled workers, who for twenty-five years were forced to work under harrowing conditions for virtually no wages. The library will announce when we receive multiple copies of these books for patrons to read, have copies on the book club shelf, along with details about our book discussion. If you would like to read it earlier, it is available for checkout from the library and as an ebook on BRIDGES. Page 4

5 EPL EVENTS Computer Series Beginning Soon Beginning in February, library staff will be offering several free computer classes. These are open to six people as space is limited. Please register with the library by calling or stopping in. Participants will need a library card in good standing. The first class will begin on Wednesday, February 7th at 10:30 am in the Children s Dept. Please notify the library to save your spot or if you have any questions. February 10:30 February 10:30 February 10:30 February 10:30 Browsing Social Media Online Library Services Second, the library will be offering a Tablet 101 class on April 4th at 10:30 am and April 12th at 6:30 pm in the community room. Library staff will go over the features of a tablet, apps that are available, and how to get the most from free library services. Bring your own tablet, otherwise the library has several for patrons to try hands-on. This class is free and open to all. How to Choose a Telescope Library Board member Steve Timmons gave a session on November 2nd offering participants insights related to how to choose a telescope for personal use. Issues such as price ranges, capabilities, and features to consider were covered, along with answering the questions of those in attendance. Page 5

6 Programming 2016 Summer Reading Wrap-Up Program! Silent Auction / Chocolate Walk Over 300 people came through the doors the day of our Silent Auction and the Chamber s annual Chocolate Walk on November 16th. The Silent Auction, held by the Friends of the EPL, brought in nearly $1,800 for telescope accessories and digital conversion lab enhancements. Thank you to all who attended! Maker Mondays November s Maker Monday was full to capacity with participants adding their own unique touches to our Holiday Board projects. Iowa Honey Queen Iowa s reigning Honey Queen visited the EPL on October 26th to give information on bees and honey production to a crowd of all ages. Carly Vannoy intends to compete for the national title once her duties in Iowa are complete. Wellness Expo The EPL hosted a booth at the Wellness Expo this fall held at the RWC. Staff shared fitness magazines, books, and DVDs available for checkout. A laptop was also ready to demonstrate how to use Bridges along with calendars to hand out listing library programs. Page 6

7 Programming 2016 Summer Reading Wrap-Up Program! Taco Dragon On October 12th, from 6-7 pm, children and their families had a great time at the Taco Dragon Party in the Community Room of the. All in attendance listened to Dragons Love Tacos read simultaneously in English and Spanish, made a dragon craft, and watched an Elephant Toothpaste science experiment. One lucky winner won books, Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin, Dragons Love Tacos 2: the Sequel by Adam Rubin, and Dragones y Tacos by Adam Rubin. Children and their families met the Taco Dragon and had their photos taken. 8 MOON EVENTS Watch for pop-up Observe the Moon events In late winter / early spring, we hope to bring the telescope out to hold some pop-up Observe the Moon (or stars!) events as weather permits. Because that is unpredictable this time of year, especially, you will want to watch our Facebook page closely for news. We may decide on a Monday that the weather looks favorable for Thursday night, and that won t allow time for our usual promotions. To stay in-the-loop about this and other My Library events, contact us to add your address to our alert list. You ll receive a message any time we add an upcoming event. You can also ask to be added to the list for a potential Astronomy Club (more news on that later). October s Observe the Moon Night Wrap-Up On October 27, the library hosted an Observe the Moon Night. Due to wind and the first snowfall of the season, the event was brought inside the library. Visitors could visit several tables during the evening which included a sun moon, earth craft, match moon phases, create moon craters, listen to moon stories, receive a moon map and eat moon pies. On the large screen a video of the moon s surface was playing in the background. We received help from Mary Trent from NW STEM Hub and Morgan Matthews from ISU Extension Office whom each hosted a table. Page 8

9 UPCOMING EVENTS Bilingual Story Times The EPL knows the importance of reading to your children at an early age. Therefore, we make story time fun and educational. We have recently implemented Bilingual Story Time for children. Reading from dual language books children listen and learn both English and Spanish. This helps their imagination travel to a different culture and meet new people every week. They can also dance to different songs or finger plays in both languages. During story time the EPL staff offers activities and crafts. Story time is held on 6:00 pm and 10:30 am in the EPL Story time Room. Bring the little ones to enjoy this event that is free and open to the public. Don t miss the Peter Rabbit Event on Thursday, February 8, Peter Rabbit himself will be joining us. January Story Times are: January 4 & 5 Dogs January 11 & 12 Caterpillar *Bilingual January 18 & 19 Bugs January 25 & 26 Polar Bears *Bilingual Lego League Lego League is held on the 4 th Saturday of the month from 10 am to 12 pm. A new theme is select every month by our EPL Staff for children to build their own work of art. They can also build on their imagination. These are then displayed with the child's name and placed on our book shelves for other people to view. Parents do not worry about cleaning up after them. The EPL staff will take care of everything. 10 SURVEY RESULTS EPL Community Survey We had an excellent response to our survey regarding library services in December. Both library users and non-users gave some useful responses that will inform our offerings going forward. We ve learned that the majority of respondents visit the library monthly (followed closely by weekly), that nearly 47% either choose not use or are not aware of our virtual services, and that over 51% learn of what the library offers via Facebook, followed closely by word of mouth. We re taking note of all individual suggestions listed in the comments, and appreciate all those who took the time to respond!
