2 Page 2 FRIENDS of Door County Libraries Summer - No. 2 NOTES FROM THE FRIENDS PRESIDENT Thank you to all our volunteers! I absolutely understand the significant role the Friends play in contributing to the quality of our Door County Libraries. I have been a member of the Friends of Door County Libraries and then a board member more years than I can remember, both while I was teaching and now while retired. As a result, I absolutely understand the significant role the Friends play in contributing to the quality of our Door County Libraries. The Friends help make our libraries great by providing resources, programs and funding for special needs. The Friends organization is, in essence, the rainy day fund for the Door County libraries. These endeavors do not happen without you and your continued support through your memberships, financial contributions, book donations and book purchases at our sales. Thank you! Please encourage family and friends to support our local libraries by joining the Friends of the Door County libraries also. The financial core of the success of Friends has always been our annual book sale, which is July this year. (See page 5 for details.) You may have noticed that we have expanded our sales to include our wonderful like-new holiday book sale on the first Saturday in December, and smaller Saturday sales during the summer and early fall months. Again, these sales are only possible through your book contributions and purchases and equally important, the increased labors of the Friends book committee. This committee, headed by LeeAnn Michalske, is continually processing and organizing your book donations. We are grateful for the innumerable hours they volunteer. I would be remiss if I did not shout out a thank you to Adele Douglass for her excellent leadership during the last two years as the Friends president. Thank you also to Delane Jome and Randy Kenny who are continuing to serve the board as secretary and treasurer, respectively. The board is grateful that Fran VanLanen is continuing as the Membership Committee, not only keeping our membership list up-dated but also making sure all donations are properly channeled and thank you notes sent. Additionally, once the newsletter and labels are printed, Fran single-handedly takes care of the bulk mailing of the newsletter. Please note the list of all current board members on page 1 of the newsletter and thank him/her for past and present service. Members of the Friends of Door County Libraries are welcome to attend the board meetings on the 2 nd Monday of each month at 3:45 p.m. in the Jane Greene room at the Sturgeon Bay library. With this proof of membership your name will not need to be checked against the membership list and you can walk in with no waiting.

3 FRIENDS of Door County Libraries Summer - No. 2 Page 3 MESSAGE FROM THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR I thank Friends officers Adele Douglass, Dorothy Wickman, Delane Jome and Randy Kenny for their work with the library this past year. I look forward to working with Dorothy Wickman, Lynn Kaczmarek, Delane Jome and Randy Kenny in officer roles in the year to come. I want all Friends members to know that you are represented by generous, talented and dedicated officers. I, also, thank board members Raeona Jordan and Lynn Kaczmarek for bringing author Brian Freeman to two large Door County audiences. The Friends work to promote reading is one of many fine things you do. I want to draw your attention to a new and growing project at Door County Library. The Door County Memory Project is being implemented by Laura Kayacan and was initiated by Nancy Emery. This is a digitized collection, and the newest addition to the collection is four copies of The Flashes, a monthly newsletter published by Sturgeon Bay High School students beginning in The collection includes: Door County, the California of the North 1914 The History of Door County, Wisconsin, The County Beautiful H.R. Holand The Cherry Industry in Door County The Wisconsin Cherry Commission Randall and Williams Illustrated Atlas of Door County, Wisconsin (1899) W.W. Hixson & Co. Plat Book of Door County, Wisconsin (1901) and (1923) Nelson, Otto Atlas of Door County, Wisconsin (1914) The Flashes, Sturgeon Bay High School yearbook 1912 to 1925 You will find a link to this collection on the Library website. Click on the Door County Memory Project link in the left column of the home page at DoorCountyLibrary.org A final note is to encourage you to continue to donate your used books to the Friends of Door County Libraries for their book sales. This is your major fundraiser and the money provides so many important projects for the libraries. This makes for interesting programs that feature volunteers who have travelled to and lived in different parts of the world, and who are willing to share their experiences with children, families and adults. Funds from the Friends enable the library to offer dozens of opportunities for families to broaden their world horizons this year. Ed and Adele Douglass shared what life was like living in West Africa! Mr. Billy took children on a rollicking musical ride around the world! 5 Page 5 FRIENDS of Door County Libraries Summer - No. 2 LEGENDARY SUMMER BOOK SALE JULY 28 - JULY 29 - JULY 30 It would not be summer in Door County without the Friends of the DC Libraries annual BOOK SALE, scheduled this year for July 28 (members only night) and the 29th and 30th. Please check the poster on the first page of the newsletter for the times and other basic information. Each year the available authors and genres are shaped by your donations. This year we have large selections of likenew books by John Grisham, William Johnstone, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, James Patterson, J.D. Robb and Stuart Woods. In addition to our shelved offerings of hardcover and paperback books, we have significant collections of books in the following categories: Childrens, Classics, Coffeetable (large format), Cook books, Fantasy, Foreign language, Mysteries, Native American, Quilting, Rare & Vintage, Religion, Science Fiction, War, The West, WW II series (Time Life). We also have a very good collection of books on tape and CD, and some great new double -zip book bags for all your bag needs. As you can tell, we have something for everyone! 6 Page 6 FRIENDS of Door County Libraries Summer - No. 2 SUCCESSFUL BRIAN FREEMAN PROGRAMS A total of some 120 people enjoyed hearing from award-winning suspense novelist Brian Freeman during his May Book and Author appearances at Sturgeon Bay and Sister Bay. Freeman s most recent book, his sixth, is The Bone House, which is set in Door County. Having a garage sale this summer? If so, please consider donating unsold books in good condition to the Friends of Door County Libraries. Bring them to the library in Sturgeon Bay and we will do an excellent job of recycling them for you! We welcome books for children as well as for adults, both fiction and non-fiction. Thank you! 7 Page 7 FRIENDS of Door County Libraries Summer - No. 2 WALKING BOOKS DELIVERS The Walking Books committee members are anxious to work with anyone who might have a need for scheduled home delivery of library books. Walking Books is a free Service that your Friends group provides to all library patrons. To take advantage of this service, please call Jan Campbell ( ) or the library ( ) and one of the committee members will contact you to arrange for library book delivery. Your Friends organization wants everyone to be able to have books available for their reading pleasure. ~ Jan Campbell PINE CREST BOOK CLUB The Pine Crest Book Club started as a request from a Walking Books client to Jan Campbell. When Jan brought this idea to the Friends Board, the idea was endorsed whole-heartedly. Dorothy Wickman volunteered to organize and facilitate the group, which meets on the third Tuesday of each month to discuss the chosen book. When selecting books, the group works within a unique timeline due to the fact that they need nine copies of a given book, most of which must be large print. Two months before a chosen book will be discussed, a request is made to Laura Kayacan, the Adult Service Librarian at the Sturgeon Bay library. Laura is able to reserve the number of books needed from libraries in the OWLSnet system. Without Laura (and the library) the book club would not exist unless each participant purchased her own book. (Talk with Laura if you have questions about starting a book club.) The Pine Crest Book Club is particularly interested in adding more nonfiction books to our reading list. Because the library system has even fewer large print non-fiction books, they are going to try a buddy system for sharing books, thus cutting the needed number of books in half. Hopefully that will increase the selection of books available to the group. Although the book club seldom agrees in their opinions of the book, the discussion is always insightful. The Pine Crest Book Club hopes to continue to have stimulating and diverse discussions of books and life for a long time! ~ Dorothy Wickman FRIENDS = READING The Title I reading program gives extra help to young readers in the schools. In Sturgeon Bay, the teachers do a summer program that keeps the kids active readers all summer long. The Friends of Door County Libraries help. A special grant from the Friends buys the summer books every year. Your generosity helps keep those kids reading. Thank you! Every year the Summer Reading Program is funded by the Friends. All the decorations, all the programs and all the incentives for our young readers come from you. Thank you so much for your continued support! This year, at the Sturgeon Bay library, we are focusing our incentives on brand new books! After ten hours of reading (or being read to) children are able to choose a book from the prize box. There s a busy October coming up, so mark your calendars now! On Sunday, OCTOBER 2, the Friends will help welcome LEE SOMERVILLE as she celebrates publication of her new book Vintage Wisconsin Gardens. This program is being co-sponsored by the Friends of Door County Libraries, Crossroads at Big Creek, the Door County Historical Society and the Door County Master Gardeners Association. It will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Crossroads at Big Creek, which is located on Michigan Street just east of Hwy 42/57 in Sturgeon Bay. Somerville, a resident of Sturgeon Bay, developed the book from research she did for her Master s degree in Landscape Architecture at the Univ. of Wisconsin. Published by Wisconsin Historical Society Press, the book traces the history of Wisconsin ornamental gardens in the 19th and early 20th century and will include recommended plant lists and garden layouts. Visit book_id=379 Later in the month, the Friends will mark National Friends of Libraries Week with a presentation by Wisconsin Poet Laureate BRUCE DETHLEFSEN at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday OCTOBER 20 in the Miller Art Museum, Sturgeon Bay. The program is being presented in cooperation with the Emily Dickinson Poetry Series of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County. (Dethlefsen will appear at the UU in Ephraim on Wednesday, Oct. 19) According to former Wisconsin Poet Laureate (and frequent instructor at The Clearing) Ellen Kort, Bruce Dethlefsen can make a stunning poem of just about anything he aims his pen at. His poems have been read by Garrison Keillor on NPR s Writer s Almanac and he has published two award-winning poetry chapbooks. Dethlefsen, whose term as the state s Poet Laureate runs from says, if a novel is winter, and a short story is a snow storm, then a poem is a snowball, squeezed.
