2 mall talk Swith pillman Do April Showers Really Bring May Flowers? I find myself repeating this phrase to help me get through the rainy spring season. I feel lucky to live in Ohio even though we often experience snow, rain, tornadoes, and hail all on the same day with occasional pockets of sunshine. According to the Old Farmers Almanac - the library has a copy - there are places like Arizona that have sunshine for nearly 300 days of the year. At first I thought this sounded dreamy. Then my eldest son Jacob moved to Arizona a year ago and recently told me he misses the snow, the sound of thunderstorms, and even the feel of cloudy days. But, I digress. Let s examine the truth behind the 1886 proverb April showers bring May flowers. While searching within the muskingumlibrary.org research databases, I decided to see what I could find on current weather trends in our area by using the Zanesville Times Recorder database. This resource gives access to the Times Recorder back to 2002 in a digital format; if you need to go back further, we ve got microfilm at John McIntire dating back to 1885! I discovered an article written in February of this year by Carol Motsinger titled Snow on the first day of spring. Typical Ohio, right?. Carol takes us on a journey through Ohio weather and asks the all-important questions as to whether this is normal for Ohio and if there is science and data to support our erratic weather patterns. To summarize, we live in a special location where cold air from Canada and hot air from the Gulf of Mexico decide to bond over drinks daily. In addition, with the Great lakes so close, they decide to blow in and crash the party on a regular basis. This soiree often gets out-of-hand and is the cause of much of our temperamental weather. Now, I fully expect to get a call from Phil Sakal from WHIZ, justifiably demanding I leave the weather reporting to the experts, but I believe this is the gist. I then decided to use another online research database from the library, Facts on File. It s a fabulous scientific database listing information in all kinds of formats such as video, experiments, essays, and diagrams. I learned the first flowering of springtime is more closely tied to temperature than to rain. This is the reason we often see blooms earlier in warmer springs than cooler ones. Flowers may not be aware of this proverb; but, regardless, they rarely have to worry about getting enough rain this time of year. I invite and encourage you to visit us at your Muskingum County Library System to learn more about a topic that interests you through attending a program, checking out a book, asking our librarians questions, or exploring all we have to offer at muskingumlibrary.org. Wishing you a flower filled May, Jennifer Lobby Sale Friday, May 18, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Friends of the Muskingum County Library System invite you browse from a diverse collection of gently used books and more at their first lobby sale of the year.
