Library Closed July 4, 2017 In one very short sentence, Ashlee Chavez said it all The library has a super bright future! Busy as she is in these first days of being our new director, she gave me me for a telephone interview followed by an e mail which demonstrated her enthusias c visions for the Corvallis Benton County Public Library. She is happy to be in this library at a very special me when our popularity has grown beyond our dreams and physical spaces. She is posi ve we ll solve these challenges given the support of the community and the crea vity of our staff. Ashlee commented on a space study that will iden fy specific concerns. It will Friends of the Library Corner by Stefani McRae Dickey, President Ever wonder what happens to highvalue books donated to the Friends? We have several outlets for our donated books, but at our local book sales, prices are low, below $5. These book sales would not be an appropriate outlet for high cost books. Our goal is to maximize the amount we give to the library each year. In 2005 a group of Friends volunteers explored how best to market these books. Lois Malango recalls On line book sales was started at the sugges on of the then Circula on Manager of the library, Lori Hildebrandt. She had experience with selling books on line and said that our discards were a gold mine As she was building our web presence, she said we needed a name quickly as a seller. Benton Books popped into my head and that s how it got its name. Lois was a founder of Benton Books and, a er 12 years, s ll works as a volunteer and co team leader. Thank you, Lois! Volunteers work Monday through Friday lis ng books for sale, and also packaging and mailing orders. The eight volunteers, Judy Ladd, Lois Malango, Nancy Schary, Valeen King, Ann Brodie, Carol Pruei, Caroline Lee, and Linda Jewe, are so efficient that Benton Books enjoys a 5 star and 99% ra ng by buyers on Amazon! Valeen, Ann and Judy Ladd, co team leader, are celebra ng 10 take months, perhaps, but she wants to explore ideas to be sure what library users really need and will support. That s of special interest to members of the Founda on board, too. They have understood those factors in the past. Generous library donors have been mo vated to give beyond tax based budgets when they could see the need. Ashlee said that the level of community support for the library is amazing, humbling and most of all, inspiring. years as volunteers. Thank you Judy, Valeen, and Ann! They process over 3,500 books per year with 1,000 listed on Amazon, 1,800 sold. About 700 books that have not sold a er one year with price reduc ons are moved to the Big Book Sale in February. Benton Books is a success, with revenues rising over the years. In 2016 the number of books sold increased by 129 or 8% over 2015, while gross sales increased by $3, or 13%. Half of the books sold were more than $12, fi een books sold for more than $100, primarily textbooks and technology, and the most expensive book sold for $300. How successful is Benton Books? The net income in 2016 a er costs for mailing, packaging, and Amazon fees were deducted, was $24, All this goes to the library for programs and services not covered by the library budget. Would you like to support the library by purchasing books online? Check out our inventory at: CORVALLIS BENTON COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY

5 Volunteer Spotlight by Mari Beth Hacke, Volunteer Coordinator Page 5 The Corvallis Public Library recently had the honor of recognizing Nancy Ashby, volunteer, for 25 years of volunteering. She was given a gi basket and gi cer ficates and was showered with gra tude. In return, she sent a unique note of gra tude herself and we have included a photo of that instead of a photo of her as was her preference. Here is a glimpse of our interview via correspondence: VC: Tell us a li le bit about yourself, your interests in life. NA: I ve always worked with children, and I ve always been involved with books and libraries. I have been (and/or am) a big sister, babysi er, childcare worker, public school teacher, library assistant, special educa on assistant, Sunday School teacher, aunt, mother, great aunt, and grandmother. I began volunteering in libraries when I was in fi h grade (the year A Wrinkle in Time won the Newbery). In junior high, I think I actually got credit and a grade for working in the school library! At Lewis and Clark College, I enjoyed my work study job at the main circula on desk, the Reserve Room desk, and in the cool basement where I mended books with glue, gauze, waxed paper, presses, pa ence, and magic. As an adult, I have volunteered with the libraries of my church, my children s schools, the Co Op, and La Leche League as well as the public library. VC: What about your spouse? NA: He is also a reader! Although his work has been in environmental sciences, his main good reads are history, biography, and rather complicated mysteries. It s fun to find interes ng things for him, too, when I m checking in books. VC: How many kids and grandkids do you have? Do you (or did you ) LOVE reading to your kids/grandkids? What was your favorite children s book? NA: Oh, YES. It s a great joy. I love to read with students, I loved to read with our three sons, and I am Very Pleased that those now adult kids read to their kids and that I get to share books with our four grandchildren, too. I probably have hundreds of favorites for different ages and stages of life! The Runaway Bunny (Margaret Wise Brown). Blueberries for Sal (Robert McCloskey). Miss Rumphius (Barbara Cooney). David and Dog (Shirley Hughes). Because of Winn Dixie (Kate DiCamillo). Li le Britches (Ralph Moody). The Narnia series (C.S. Lewis). The Wrinkle in Time series (Madeleine L Engle). Esperanza Rising (Pam Munoz Ryan). Winnie the Pooh (A.A. Milne). Li le Bear (Minarik). Babe, the Gallant Pig (Dick King Smith). Caps for Sale (Esphyr Slobodkina). Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (Judith Viorst). Go, Dog, Go (P.D. Eastman). Beverly Cleary! Laura Ingalls Wilder! So many more! The All of a Kind Family series by Sydney Taylor was one of my childhood delights. VC: What are some of your fondest (or hardest?) memories of volunteering at the library? NA: Fond memories: Wonderful people. Laughing at book tles. Recommending good reads. Hard memories (but also fond): Wonderful, caring, dedicated people, many of whom are no longer here. Checking in a stack of books about one subject and recognizing that people in our community are (for example) remodeling, studying for the SAT or GRE, raising chickens, or dealing with difficult health or personal issues. It s kind of an interes ng way to check the pulse of the city. (Vampires figure in there, too, somewhere, but they don t catch me the same way stacks of books about cancer or bankruptcy do.) VC: What book came across the Adult Check In counter that changed your life J or that you recommend to other volunteers/ patrons/staff? What are you currently reading? NA: I am always bringing home books that ran across the desk, and every book has some influence. Life changing? Maybe from years ago, Living More with Less (Doris Janzen Longacre), and more recently, Atul Gawande s Being Mortal. I currently, as always, have more than one book going, but in honor/remembrance of Brian Doyle, I have a couple of his books checked out now to re read. Dear Nancy, thank you for being a dedicated, reliable, though ul volunteer and person all these years, coming in a er work for your weekly shi. CBCPL is honored to have had you here for 25 years, and we hope for many more to come! Be-Tween Night Have you ever wanted to play in the library a er hours? Well, if you are in 4th 6th grade, now's your chance! Join us for Nerf games in the library! (Use the Monroe Ave. entrance. Someone will let you in at 6:15.) July 14 6:15 PM 8:00 PM 4th & 6th graders are welcome to join this group and give input to staff about programs for tweens! July 28 4:00 PM Youth Ac vity Room JULY/AUGUST 2017
