1 CHECK IT OUT! a bi monthly newsletter of the Corvallis Benton County Public Library Mar/Apr 2015 Volume 23 No. 2 Introducing Family Literacy ipads at the Library! by Kristin Starnes, Youth Services The Corvallis Benton County Public Library is pleased to offer Family Literacy ipads for in library use. The ipads come preloaded with educational and entertainment apps geared for children and selected by Youth Services Librarians. These ipads are intended for use by children and families together while they visit the library. The Family Literacy ipads are a multisensory tool for engaging young children in building multiple literacy skills, along with fine motor, language, cognitive, and social skills. These new ipads replace the library s retired collection of Leapfrog LeapPad Learning Systems. While the ipads are intended for use by children with their families, a responsible adult must check out the ipad. Checkout is limited to library patrons whose library cards are in good standing. Family Literacy ipads check out for a 2 hour period and must remain in the library. This is a pilot project and will be regularly reviewed. The library looks forward to finding new ways to improve and expand our services throughout our community. How can parents learn more about the issues around digital technology and children? We re glad you asked! Librarians have compiled a list of recommended books and articles in our Growing Up in a Digital World Parent Resource Guide (available at the Youth Services Desk) that discuss this important question. This is just a starting point, though. We are happy to help you locate more information on this subject so that you can make the most informed decisions for your family and values. image credit: Chloe and ipad Mini 4/5 by C.K. Koay // (CC BY NC 2.0) Silk Road Music Art Tours of the Library Sponsored by the Friends of the Library & Multicultural Literacy Center. Saturday, March 7 th 2:00 For over twenty years, Silk Road Music has been smashing stereotypes about Chinese music and taking Chinese instruments in new artistic directions. Its pioneering musical fusions have merged Chinese folk and classical music with Brazilian, jazz, Celtic, Spanish, Arabic, Aboriginal and blues music. Founded by Qiu Xia He (pr. Chusha Her), a one time music teacher and touring musician in her native Shaanxi, China, the ensemble has earned a Juno nomination, two West Coast Music Awards and two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations. Most recently, the group has begun exploring sinified flamenco music and performing on stage with flamenco dancers. First Tuesday Starting April 7 th 10:00 AM Library Lobby Why does the library have so many gargoyle statues? Is there really a time capsule? These questions and more will be answered by Library Foundation Board member, Freda Vars, as she leads you through an exploration of the art that can be found at the Corvallis Benton County Public Library. Discover hidden gems and get a glimpse of the library s rich history during this fascinating look into one of the many reasons our library space is such a treasure.

Refer questions and input to the Library Administration Office at Printed with soy ink on recycled, post consumer waste paper. The Library Foundation is basically about money. How can we supplement the city/ county budget that our Library staff, with the Library Advisory Board, has been allotted from taxes to operate the library system. In our meetings our able Treasurer, Paul Dickey, reports on our income and expenditures that you, the donors, have chosen to support. Your generosity is very much appreciated. At the last meeting we talked about how we can update the way we communicate about the Foundation. In marketing terms, can we rebrand our look? Catch the attention of a broader demographic? As our President Steve Stephenson said, read younger folks. Freda Vars has already taken a step in this direction by volunteering to lead art tours of the library once a month. Freda is Friends of the Library Corner by Cathe Walker, Membership Chair Spring Membership Drive The Friends of the Library annual Spring Membership Drive is underway. If you have not renewed your membership in the last twelve months, this is your opportunity. If you re thinking about joining the Friends of the Library to help us support the many popular library programs, now is the time! There are several ways to join or renew. Choose the method that works best for you: Membership forms will be sent with our annual membership letter. Get a form at the library: see the Friends display in the lobby or ask any staff member. Go online: from the Library home page, follow the Friends of the CBCPL link to the Membership page and then either: enthusiastic and knowledgeable about our collection; she ll lead great tours, starting in April. Sign up for one! Other tours of areas where books are processed, or growing technology is made available, may be offered. Two skilled members, Russa Kittredge and Krista Klinkhammer, suggested updating brochures with color and pictures. You may have noticed new logos used by the Library, Friends and Foundation. All are meant to make library information more attractive and accessible. As you can see, a board with a major purpose in raising money involves creative talents. And it is also a lot of fun. The Friends of the Library would like to thank all of our members who so generously support library programs through their annual memberships and additional donations, and through the gifts of their time and energies to make all our activities such a success. Thank you all for helping support our wonderful library! CORVALLIS BENTON COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY

5 Message from Library Director Carolyn Rawles Thanks to all of you who answered our recent patron survey. We received over 3,800 responses, a very good response rate. What did we learn from your responses? One thing we learned is that print is not dead! When we asked what you primarily do when using the library, the most common response was checking out adult print materials (55%), followed by checking out children s print materials (11%). Interestingly the next most common primary use is to download e books (7%). A good number of you come in to pick up a hold (43%) and many of you browse the shelves. We have a large number of DVD and audiobook users as well. Our survey consultant tells us that we have a high rate of e book users, either as a primary library use or in conjunction with checking out print materials. We also have a high rate of DVD users and audiobook users. Nearly 60% use smartphones, 68% laptops, and 58% desktop computers. Our respondents are generally satisfied with the library and our services, with the highest scores going to customer service and our collection. However, increasing availability of print materials and e books, and improving ways of downloading e books were cited as improvements that would cause people to use the library more. We also learned that reading suggestions and more reminders would increase library use for many. When asked how important it is that the library be involved in providing particular community services, computer and wifi access, access to electronic materials, and programs and activities for children were the top choices. We will continue to gather data and use these responses as we craft a new strategic plan that helps us serve you even better. R.E.A.D.
