1 CHECK IT OUT! a bi-monthly newsletter of the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library Jul/Aug 2014 Volume 22 No. 4 Exciting Changes in Your Library! by Carolyn Rawles, Library Director Summer at our Library is always a time of lots of activity as we celebrate Summer Reading for kids (and now for adults too!). Look for free and fun weekly programs at all library locations throughout the summer. This year, however, we have some other exciting changes in store! Our biggest news is that Sunday hours at the Corvallis Library returned June 22! The Library is now open from 1:00 to 5:00 pm on Sundays, and the meeting rooms are available to rent on Sundays too. We thank Corvallis voters for this, as the hours increase was part of the 2013 Operating Levy. Sunday was previously always a busy day per hour, and we are thrilled to be open seven days a week again! Additionally, a new website has been launched which features a clean new design that should be intuitive to use. We hope the more modern look and ease of navigation will encourage you to explore all your Library has to offer. Our refreshed logo is prominently featured on the new site and symbolizes both our dedication to reading and the Library s connection with the community. One special feature is the site has been optimized for viewing on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, reflecting changes in the way our users now access our resources. CORVALLIS LIBRARY NOW OPEN SEVEN DAYS A WEEK! CORVALLIS LIBRARY NEW Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday 10 am 6 pm 10 am 6 pm 1 pm 5 pm The Library is also in the process of adding another vendor for ebook access, the 3M Cloud Library. A different array of materials will be available, and these titles are bought just for our Library, not shared with users throughout the State, so they should be more readily available. Staff really liked the ease of downloading with this product in testing, and we hope you too will find this new service convenient. Are you looking for a nonfiction DVD? In Corvallis, these items were recently moved upstairs closer to the nonfiction book collection. So when you go to pick up a travel book for your next vacation, stop by and get a travel DVD at the same time. This change helped us with overcrowding in the first floor media section. A number of new faces will be joining our staff this summer as we implement the next phase of our staff reorganization. Community Library Specialists, similar to most of our branch staffing, have been added to the Corvallis Adult and Youth Services Division to provide first line customer service. These positions will help free up the Reference Librarians to do more programming and outreach to the community. A new Youth Services Librarian will be joining us in July because of a vacancy and sadly, we said good-bye to longtime Circulation staff member Sally Price, who retired after over 20 years with the Library. A new Library Specialist III will join us in July to fill Sally s vacant position.

Library Closed July 4 Independence Day Library Director Carolyn Rawles shared an inspiring story that recently aired on NPR the memory of a Native American woman interviewed by her son. She remembered being introduced to the Bookmobile when she was just a child, living in a camp. She was thrilled to be able to check out books which she said she didn t just read she devoured. As she grew into her teen years, she said reading books changed her world. They taught her that hope was not just a word, and they gave her the courage to leave the camp and attend night school. Later on she worked in a library for thirty years. Her story reminded me of Oregon s migrant camps 50 years ago. Encouraged by the superintendent s wife, our church [Books] taught her that hope was not just a word The annual Friends program for the 2013/2014 year officially concluded in June with our annual membership meeting and final board meeting. The program year officially starts again in September. This may lead you to conclude the Friends are splashing around at Osborn, chasing the alluring melody of the ice cream truck, or slouching under a shade tree with a well-chewed straw protruding from our slack-jawed countenance. Well, not so fast! This year we are holding our first ever book sale at the Monroe Community Library on Saturday, August 23 from 10 am to 3 pm. This is particularly exciting because it coincides with the Monroe Fest, celebrating 100 years since the town was incorporated in Then, during the Corvallis Fall Festival celebration weekend, the Friends focus on paperback books with the Fall Festival Book Sale. Watch for flyers and news sometime around mid-september! women, with our children, drove out weekly to one camp in the summer. We arrived after the children came in from picking crops. I had a car full of books. The children came running, still dripping wet from the shower house, to hear stories and borrow books. They were very, very eager. There are no migrant camps in Oregon now; workers just follow the crops or move into town. However, our Library still has a wonderful Bookmobile, which serves communities throughout the County, rural and urban. Children and adults have every opportunity to devour books that can inspire their lives. If you wish to support this outreach, send a contribution to the Library Foundation and designate it for the Bookmobile. Who knows who will have his or her world changed by books? by David Low, Friends of the Library Co-President However, you should not conclude that book sales constitute the sum of the Friends mission. A lesser known part of what we do involves sponsoring a variety of special Library programs. For example, perhaps you were one of the 160 who experienced author and local hiking guru Bill Sullivan in October, or one of the 66 who attended the four writein sessions during November s National Novel Writing Month, or heard author Vicki Robin discuss transforming our local Food System in March, or participated in April s community poetry reading, or biked in to May s class sessions on maintaining your bicycle with the Corvallis Bicycle collective? If you were involved in any of these, the Friends helped make it happen. During this past year, the Friends made 18 very different programs happen either through the use of the meeting room or outright financial assistance to the talent involved. The Friends are looking forward to sponsoring even more fun and informative programs next year! CORVALLIS-BENTON COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY

July 17 1 pm Let s Move It! July am Spy-Ence! July 24 1 pm Summer Reading Finale August 7 2 pm Three Cheers for Sally! by Cathi Roberts, Volunteer Coordinator When Sally Price retires on June 30, the Library will be losing an irreplaceable employee a woman with 27 years of experience and an unparalleled talent for working capably and cheerfully with patrons, colleagues, and volunteers. Sally s been in charge of the Corvallis Public Library s student volunteer program since She has also managed our small program for disabled volunteers, including both teens and adults. Between January 2008 and December 2013, student volunteers logged 3,390 hours; disabled volunteers, 1,970 hours. Over the same period, 83 people participated in those two programs at the Corvallis Library, and Sally was responsible for training, supervising, and managing about 85% of them. The work Sally has done with these groups has benefited dozens of individuals over the years, and has strengthened the Library s connection to young people, families, schools, and social service agencies. Our Library has been very fortunate to have a staff member with the skills, personal attributes, and flexible work style that enable her to accommodate the myriad needs, schedules, and abilities of these volunteers. This was a very different place when Sally signed on as a part-time Library Clerk in the late 1980s. The brick building was much smaller and books were checked out with a date-stamper. By 1999, the Library appeared very much as it does today, and now working fulltime, Sally began managing the Holds process that enables patrons to reserve popular items. The student volunteer program just came with that position, Sally remembers. At first there were only a handful of teen volunteers, but then schools started encouraging and sometimes requiring students to serve as community volunteers. The program grew, and so did the number of Holds Sally processed. She s kept track, and tells me that in 2002 the number of items placed on hold totaled 59,694; by 2013 it was 300,251, a five-fold increase! Sally s retirement plans are modest but wide-ranging. They include working in her garden, and focusing on her creative side quilting, knitting, and making collages. She ll also have more time to visit with daughters Hannah (a Portland interior designer) and Antonia (an artist and yoga instructor living in Seattle). And then there s the vineyard: Sally and her husband Steve, a plant physiologist and viticulturist, own 10 acres of pinot noir grapes in south Benton County (might there also be opportunities for wine tasting?). Sally has been a joy to work with, and it will literally take a halfdozen staff members to do all the things she currently manages single-handedly. Thankfully, she s agreed to come back and help us out as a Dial-a-Book volunteer. Sally Price, Library Specialist III JULY/AUGUST 2014
