23 rd August 2016 STAR PERFORMER IN THE IGCSE On 11 August 2016 the results of the IGCSE examinations for the session MAY/JUNE 2016 were declared. From the time I woke up, I was riddled with nerves asking myself just one question-how IS THE RESULT GOING TO TURN OUT? With my mind wavering here and there, I hurriedly left home knowing that my result would be declared in a matter of hours. At 10:30 that morning I called home and asked my parents to check my result first and then inform me about my grades. The next minute and a half that followed was the most nerve addling of my life. I remember glancing at my phone anxiously, waiting for a response from my parents. Finally, I received a message from my parents that read, Congratulations Aaryan, You have received A-STARS in all your subjects. I was over the moon with joy; tears swelled; I was overcome with pride and bliss as the phone calls flooded to congratulate me! I was elated with my result and I thought I thoroughly deserved i! All of the credit however, goes to my teachers in RBK INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY! It is their nurturing and guidance and most importantly, the faith that they reposed in me over my 6 years here that got me this result! RBKIA has moulded and shaped me into the individual that I am today. I am proud and overjoyed upon breaking a school record, which is, being the first person in the history of RBKIA to achieve an All A-STAR Grades in all the subjects that a student has appeared for! I express my gratitude to all my teachers and friends who had faith in me throughout my years in RBKIA. I am overwhelmed; going out on a high note and that exuberance I share with one and all in RBKIA! I remember my English teacher and Home Room Teacher, Ms Meera Rangarajan saying frequently, The winner takes them all! -AARYAN PANDIT 1

Month CANDIDATES CONTESTING THE STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTION
MEETING WITH GUEST SPEAKERS PYP Nursery On Friday, 12 th August, our Nursery students learnt about Stages of growth through an interaction with Ms Jini and Ms Kiara. They had brought their infants aged 3 months and 6 months to the class. They shared their knowledge and experiences which gave students an insight into the stages of growth. 5
MEETING WITH GUEST SPEAKERS PYP K1 Students of K1 learned about five sense organs through an interaction with Dr. Shashikant, an ENT specialist. He spoke about how children should take care of their sense organs as they are very sensitive. Students actively participated during the session and answered questions posed by him. 6
GUEST SPEAKER GRADE 1 As part of our current UOI, Myself, on August 17th, our first graders had a very enlightening PYP session with guest speaker Mr. Maurice D Cruz, who spoke about Symmetry. One of the Lines of Inquiry is learning about physical characteristics and, as integration to the UOI, our students are learning Symmetry of the Human Body in their art class. Mr. D Cruz introduced the concept of symmetry by using different geometric shapes and showing the students how each can be divided into two equal parts. The students came to know what a line of symmetry is. Towards the end of the session the kids were able to distinguish between symmetrical and asymmetrical figures through practical demonstration. This session was certainly informative, thought provoking, and fun. We are sure that our students are now looking at objects around them with a new perspective. 7
GUEST SPEAKER GRADE 2 PYP For our current UOI Communication, we appreciate the efforts of Ms. Nitisha, Pavitra s mother, who came to address our second grade students about The Importance of dialogue. Ms. Nitisha rightly said that With the growing means of communication we are forgetting that the easiest way to communicate is talking (dialogue). Students later reflected on the importance of having a conversation and even promised to start engaging in conversations with more people from now on. 8
GUEST SPEAKER GRADE 4 Month As part of the ongoing unit of inquiry: A person s appearance and behaviour can lead to perceptions, the fourth graders welcomed our guest speaker Dr. Kavya Rajesh Shetty, a fourth grade parent, who addressed our classes on Impact of Hygiene on Perceptions'. We learned that personal hygiene encompasses all of the daily routines that help keep our body clean. When people don't learn these habits, or they become overlooked, certain consequences may develop, ranging from social problems to potentially serious diseases. One of the most effective ways we have to protect ourselves and others from illness is good personal hygiene. This means washing our hands, especially, but also our body. It means being careful not to cough or sneeze on others, cleaning things that you touch if you are unwell, putting items such as tissues (that may have germs) into a bin, and being extra careful when we are at risk of catching an infection. Dr. Shetty showed us, by using a special magic powder, how easy it is to transmit microorganisms from one person to another. It was a fun and visible way to realize how the simple act of shaking hands becomes a multiplier of germs. PYP After watching the video resource she shared on what viruses, bacteria, and germs are, we became more aware of how to fight them. Once in class we connected hygiene with grooming, and grooming with first impressions and perceptions. After further discussion, and as part of the group reflection, our students came to the conclusion that a well groomed person is received well by his peer group members and that society also looks up to a person whose appearance is presentable. It is fair to say that after the doctor s visit and their own reflection, they will take action and be more aware of their grooming when coming to school or going to a family function or any other activity in which they want to make a good impression. 9
LINGUIST-LANGUAGE A EXTRAVAGANZA Like the previous years, Universal School Group, at Ghatkopar in Mumbai, invited us for an Inter-School Competition THE LINGUIST-A LANGUAGE EXTRAVAGANZA which was held on Saturday 06 August 2016 from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm. MYP It was an opportunity for the students to interact and exchange ideas with their academic brethren from other parts of the city. About the competition: Six categories of competitions were held testing varied skills of the competitors. These are the categories: 1. Literature Quiz: - one team comprising of 2 participants. There will be multiple rounds and participants will be awarded points for the correct answer. 2. Ad-lib: - The contestant will be given a topic on the spot and he/she will have to speak impromptu for 2-3 minutes. The contestant will be given preparation time of one minute. The content, vocabulary, thought process, power of expression and the public speaking skills of the contestants would be the important criteria for judgment. 3. Poetry in Voice:- Ballads/Poems: La joie des poems: English Recitation (Students to recite only) French Recitation Kavi Sammelan: Hindi Recitation The contestant will have to recite a ballad/poem in any one of the languages mentioned above and should avoid poems that are too short (Less than 10 lines). 4. Mono act: This entails enacting a scene from famous plays. The contestant s ability to enact a scene and to connect with the audience would be the important parameters of this competition. The length of the mono act should not exceed 3 minutes. Contestants can dress/use a prop according to the act. 5. Design a cover for a story book:-the topic for the cover page will be given to the contestants on the spot. They will be given an hour to design. Drawing paper will be provided. Contestants are requested to carry the required drawing material. The layout and the overall appeal of the design are important. The design on the cover should be able to depict the entire story. 6. Debate: - In this category, topics will be given. Students have to select any one. A preparation time of 10 minutes will be given and the speaker has 2 minutes to talk for the topic and then another 2 minutes to speak against the topic. 10

Varun was selected for the Literature Quiz with a partner while Aditya, all alone was to recite an English poem! Aditya selected the poem independently and finalised it after discussions with his English teacher, Ms. Meera Rangarajan. On the morning of the event both the kids woke up bright and early and hoped the Weather Gods would be kind to them as the city had been under a deluge the previous day! Luckily, their prayers were answered and the event went off as scheduled. Participating in such inter-school events gives the kids a tremendous boost of confidence. They learn to appreciate differences and similarities amongst compatriots from other schools and embrace these. They make new friends- albeit for a short duration during the event. Most importantly, such events teach them the importance of giving their best, of being humble in a win and gracious when not on the winning side! Truly happy that the school provides such amazing opportunities to its students! -SUNITA BADRINARAYAN 11
MYP On 06 Aug 2016, selected student-participants went to Universal school Ghatkopar for the THE LINGUIST-LANGUAGE A- EXTRAVAGANZA." It was a great opportunity to show off or language skills. There were many events like the LITERATURE QUIZ, DEBATE, MONO ACT, and POETRY RECITATION and so on. Our school students won a few prizes. I bagged the III POSITION for the mono act event! I felt much honoured and cheerful as the previous year when I did not win anything noteworthy. On that morning, on reaching the school, I had butterflies in my stomach. However, when the teacher- in- charge announced my name, I realized that there is nothing to be afraid of and I went to perform my act. This was a very enriching experience. I look forward for bagging the First Prize next year! -JAHNAVI PANDIT GRADE 8 On 06 Aug 2016, at Universal School, Ghatkopar, I was sitting with my team mate, Gr 9 Varun Badrinarayan, answering questions at a literary quiz. Our team won the quiz, a huge surprise to me, because neither of us was fully prepared. In the first round, we could hardly answer any questions. But, that completely changed once the second round started. We answered most of the questions. When questions were thrown to the floor, we tried to answer as fast as we could. When Varun told me that we were in the lead, I was perplexed, yet I was happy. During the awards ceremony, my knees were trembling when our category came. And, we won! I am really happy that our English Teacher, Ms. Meera Rangarajan had carefully chosen us. Had she not, we would not have won. I wish that in future, Meera ma am sends us for such competitions that help us to showcase our talents! NAKSHATRA DHARAP -GRADE 9 I was one of the selected few that were given the opportunity to participate at Universal School s Competition. My event was Ad-lib, where a topic was given to us on the spot and after 3 minutes of preparing, we had to speak for 1-2 minutes. I am not good with public speaking and so I was very scared about contesting. Our judge was a radio jockey who had judged countless speaking and literary competitions. She had a bowl with her, in which there were chits containing the topics we had to talk about. The first person s topic was Reading online vs. Reading Physical Books. His speech was very well presented, but his nervousness was clearly shown. It was quite an intimidating and tense environment as well! Everyone got wonderful yet serious topics and I got Best Thing That Happened to You This Weekend. I was a bit confused because I had to balance the casualty of the topic and content with the formality of speech. I wished everyone good luck and began my speech. I felt that I had done well but not well enough to win. This contest helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses in speech. Even though I did not stay for the awards ceremony, I got the message that I had won the First Prize! I could not believe it! I told myself with confidence that I will work focused on my public-speaking skills to grab prizes for the next competition too. -NISHTHA DAS GRADE 9 12
Before THE LINGUIST- A LANGUAGE EXTRAVAGANZA competition, I was very nervous, like others! When I first entered the room, I noticed everyone was senior than me and that added to my nervousness. After the first round, NAKSHATRA DHARAP and I were in the last place, not having performed to the expected MYP mark. But from the second round onwards, we started performing better and by the time the quiz had ended, I was confident we were the winners! And we did! I felt escalated, because last year we had finished second and this year we finished first. I was very happy that we won, and our school did a pretty good job in the competition. -VARUN BADRINARAYAN GRADE 9 On Sat 06 Aug 2016, we went to the Universal School for an interschool competition, THE LINGUIST- A LANGUAGE EXTRAVAGANZA. We, as participants were excited yet nervous at the same time. I was in an event called For /against. In this event I had to speak in favour of a topic and against the same topic. It was challenging to think of both of the sides of the same story but fun at the same time. No prize for me, but I enjoyed this experience and chance given to me! -SRIYA SRIVASTAVA GRADE 6 I had been selected for THE LINGUIST- A LANGUAGE EXTRAVAGANZA. I had no idea what this was until my English Teacher; Ms.Meera Rangarajan told me that I had to recite an English poem in front of other school students! I was excited as this was the first time I was taking part in any event in MYP. It took a long time for me to select a poem and after hours of searching and shortlisting, I finally selected one titled, My smartphone isn t very smart by Ken Nesbit. My teacher prepared an introduction for the poem. The poem was hilarious as it talked about why the smartphone isn t smart but actually dumb. Even I had a good laugh while memorizing it. Once this was done I worked on body language, expressions, etc. After a few days of preparation I was finally good to go. I had this nervous feeling inside of me though. The day had arrived. When I reached the school where the competition was being held, I was scared and I felt alone. My brother Varun and I walked inside and were relieved as we saw some of our friends and Teacher-escort and Senior Librarian,Ms.Uma Gandhi, was waiting in the lobby. Together, we participants went to the waiting room before finally going to our allotted classrooms. When my name was called out loud, there were butterflies in my stomach suddenly turned into bats! I was so scared. But, I took a few deep breaths and started. I would say it was pretty good for my first try. After we all were finished, we went to the award ceremony. Although I did not win any award, my brother did and so did my seniors. We all cheered for each other and were very happy for each other and for our school! When I went back home, I told myself that I would do much better the next time. - ADITYA BADRINARAYAN GRADE 6 13

MYP ALL IS WELL THAT ENDS WELL Grade 10, Pranav Lakhan, was certified in 'Microsoft PowerPoint 2013' in This year once again, he was certified in 'Microsoft Word He scored highest (982/1000) in both the certifications. In addition, this year he bagged a 'Silver Medal' at The National Levels in Microsoft Championship held in Delhi in May NUMBER SYSTEM It was wonderful to know the history of different types of Number System, like The Egyptian, The Greek and The Hindu-Arabic system were evolved to represent the numbers. There was a need to represent these numbers and they were represented in the form of symbols. As the need for large numbers grew, many civilizations invented symbols for large numbers. Today, we use The Hindu-Arabic System. It is interesting to learn about classification of Numbers. The fascinating part was to represent integers on number line and to know about addition and subtraction of integers using number line. 15
MYP Last week, while learning, we came across numbers which can not be split up ino parts (factors). A prime number which is a positive whole number and has exactly two factors: itself and one.we also learned about composite numbers and how to represent the them in to its prime factors. The interesting part of the study was to know Least Common Multiple (LCM) & Highest Common Factor (HCF) of two or more than two numbers and the use of LCM and HCF in daily life. The students commented that, The Video shown in this regard was mind blowing. Further, the discussion on multiplication of two numbers with positive-positive number, negative-negative number, positive -negative number was brain storming. The research question we came across was why multiplication of negative-negative number is a positive number. So, while learning Number System, we understood the Relationship among different types in the Number System and how they can be represented and what is its Global context. We also understood Communication, a very important ATL skill. Over all, it was real fun the way we understood to learn Number System. Thank you Dr Ashok! -ab&gfe_rd=cr&ei=r3wnv4-omltv8wfg54hqbq#q=6+grade+gcf+and+lcm+real+life+applications&tbm=vid - STUDENTS OF Grade -6A & 6B 16
KNOW MORE ABOUT ALERT-INDIA FOUNDATION Month On 13 August 2016, Ms Rashmi Talreja, Incharge for Service as action, introduced us to the representative from the Alert-India Foundation. She delivered a small speech on: MYP What exactly do we understand by leprosy? I gained some knowledge about the disease that I had never heard before! I was surprised to know that it is less infectious than even the common cold! I was overcome by the video they showed; I felt deeply for the people who had suffered from this disease and was saddened by the amount of social stigma this disease carries. How people shun those who suffer from the disease! In one case, the husband walked out of the marriage because he found his wife had contracted leprosy! It was disheartening! This disease has really scared the lives of several people! I wish we learn more about this dreaded disease and do not fall prey to the myths about it! After the assembly, we went back to our class and sat down for a discussion on how to raise funds for this cause. After brainstorming as a group, we came up with the following activities: To spread awareness -Make posters / leaflets -Put a post/ video on social media To raise funds -Terracotta treat-painting on products like bells/decorative lamps/designer plates/statues -Organise a sports event -Gaming centre -Hold a mini market (Yard sale) -Stand-up comedy show -NAKSHATRA DHARAP GRADE 9 17
