Module 2 Lesson 8 Voices of Verbs

Grammar A. Tenses of Verbs Simple tenses Continuous/ Progressive tenses Perfect tenses B. Subject Verb Agreement C. Voices of Verb (Transitive Verb) Active Voice Passive Voice

Two Voices of Transitive Verb

Voice is a property of transitive verb that describes the correlation between the action that the verb conveys and the agent or recipient of that action. The subject is either the doer/ agent of the action or it is the receiver of the action. Two voices of Transitive verbs: 1. Active Voice 2. Passive Voice

Active Voice indicates that in a sentence, the subject is the doer/agent/ actor of the action. The element that is acted upon is called the receiver or the object of the action (verb). This is the normal way of constructing sentences. Example: o Chito sees his mother coming. o He opens the door

o Mrs. Cruz is buying her daughter clothes. o The manager sent the employees a memo on attendance. o Yvonne has told her friends a humorous story. * Please see notes on Table of Conversion of Voices of Verbs. The format of the voices vary with the different tenses of the verb.

o Mrs. Cruz is buying her daughter clothes. o The manager sent the employees a memo on attendance. o Yvonne has told her friends a humorous story. * Please see notes on Table of Conversion of Voices of Verbs. The format of the voices vary with the different tenses of the verb.

In some cases, the doer of the action in the Passive Voice is omitted because: the doer is unknown o Fire was discovered during the early Paleolithic period. o This period was marked by widespread use of stone tools. othese stool tools were also used to produce fire. The doer can be provided in a generalized context.

The recipient is more important and therefore emphasized. o Fireworks were used in China to scare evil spirits. o The craft of making fireworks is called pyrotechnics. o Fireworks were later modified to become weapons of war.

There are several doers of the action. o Passive serum therapies for vaccination were developed in o Cholera and typhoid vaccines were first introduced for public protection against the deadly diseases. o Cell culture was shown to be able to grow virus paving the way for the production of viral vaccines.

The Passive Voice is generally used in scientific writings such as reports, researches, procedure because the procedures and results are more important than the ones doing the The use of Passive voice should be avoided because: o It can create awkward sentences. o It causes sentences to appear flat and uninteresting.

Other examples of Active Voice converted to Passive Voice: oclothes are being bought by Mrs. Cruz for her daughter. or oher daughter is being bought clothes by Mrs. Cruz. oa memo on attendance was sent to the employees by the manager. or

o The employees were sent a memo on attendance by the manager. o A humorous story has been told to her friends by Yvonne. o Her friends have been told a humorous story by Yvonne.
