But the first thing I discovered in my research was that its first Broadway run coincided with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. No good play ever exists in a socio-political vacuum. We cannot ignore the period that created the piece. Nor can we ignore that we are Canadians performing a most American play. It s easy to forget Canada had been at war since How Uncle Sam managed to keep his fingers in his ears for three years is a question better saved for psychologists. At the heart of this hysterically funny play is a family deeply afflicted by mental illness. There is a goodly amount of gallows humour. Each Brewster clearly displays contemporary-classifiable mental illnesses. We ve tried our best to be true and sympathetic to those illnesses, just as the playwright was. You may also notice that we ve attempted to recreate the speech patterns of the period. Reliable sources indicate the surname Roosevelt would ve been closer to Ruse-uh-velt, rather than Rowz-ah-velt. When the couple return home, he finds a corpse hidden in a window seat, his aunts behaving very strangely, and the rest of his family bordering on insanity. Directed by Phil Bowerman Owen and Lee, though brothers, are polar opposites in character and circumstances. When they decide to go away together and do a little fishing, the waters get rougher by the hour as two women enter their getaway and really rock the boat. This is truly Foster at his finest and the comedy is smart, unpretentious, and sometimes sweetly sad. PRIDE & PREJUDICE Mar Apr. 15, 2017 from the novel by Jane Austen, adapted for the stage by Jon Jory. Directed by Lise Lindenberg Imagine this.
