3 From the President Your Ticket to Hamilton In his glowing review for the New York Times, theater critic Ben Brantley writes that Hamilton makes us feel the unstoppable, urgent rhythm of a nation being born. This month, WGBH brings you the story of how the groundbreaking Broadway musical and pop culture phenomenon winner of 11 Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize was born. Three years in the making, Great Performances/Hamilton s America (page 18) takes you behind the scenes of Lin- Manuel Miranda s hit show, revealing how he turned Alexander Hamilton s epic life into a must-see, hip-hop history lesson. You get a front-row seat to Miranda s creative process thanks to the special access enjoyed by the filmmakers. We invited cameras into the room where it happened a few years ago, and they captured parts of this journey no one has seen, Miranda says. We can t wait to share it. Hamilton s America, which kicks off the sixth annual PBS Arts Fall Festival, features newly shot footage of the New York production with its original cast, trips to historic locations, such as Mt. Vernon and Valley Forge with Miranda and other cast members, and a surprising range of interviews with prominent personalities, experts, politicians and musicians: everyone from President Barack Obama and US Senator Elizabeth Warren, to Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Sondheim and many others. Stay tuned afterward for a special encore presentation of the WGBH-produced series Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One. In an episode from 010, Hinojosa talks with Miranda, then best known for his work writing and starring in the acclaimed Broadway musical, In the Heights. Their conversation touches on Miranda s background, the Latino experience in America and what was then a new project in the early stages of development. I m not a founding father, but I read Hamilton s story and I said, I know that guy, I just know that guy, Miranda says. I know how he thinks and why he was so brilliant and ambitious but also self-destructive, and the childhood that fed that. It just spoke to me. From this moment of inspiration to the bright lights of Broadway, enjoy this up-close look at a transformative artist crafting his masterpiece made possible by your generous annual support. 28 89.7 WGBH, Boston s Local NPR WGBH Welcomes New Producer Delores Edwards has joined WGBH News as series producer for Basic Black and Open Studio. Edwards is responsible for the weekly production of both shows, covering stories that impact communities of color for Basic Black and exploring the creative processes of artists from across the country for Open Studio. We are fortunate to bring a journalist of Delores stature on board here at WGBH, says Bob Dumas, WGBH News executive producer. Her diverse experience and skill set will help us further distinguish a number of preeminent programs. For the past nine years, Edwards has served as producer for CBS in New York City, where she worked on multiple news programs including CBS This Morning. Edwards, a Northeastern University graduate, also has worked for ABC News, A&E, BET and PBS. Women in Tech Fellows The GroundTruth Project, working with SiliconANGLE Media s thecube, WGBH News, and PRI s Innovation Hub, has launched a one-month fellowship called Women in Tech to help foster emerging female journalists coverage of the technology industry. Three journalists including WGBH News own Tori Bedford, associate producer for Boston Public Radio will report on gender inequality within the technology industry. The fellows will train in Boston during October and attend the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference in Houston the largest gathering of female technologists in the world. We re thrilled to be able to work with young journalists and to be part of their journey as they look at how advances in technology will change all of our lives, says Innovation Hub Host Kara Miller. Eric in the Evening Pharoah s Sound With one of the most distinctive tenor saxophone sounds in jazz, Pharoah Sanders made a name for himself playing expressionistic, nearly anarchic free jazz in John Coltrane s ensembles of the mid- 1960s. From the late 60s on, he worked primarily as leader of his own band, playing in a variety of contexts, from free to mainstream. Host Eric Jackson highlights Sanders work as a band leader. Sun, 10/16 at 9pm The Future of Self-Driving Cars WGBH News recently partnered with Boston Globe transportation reporter Robin Washington on the one-week series Who s Gonna Drive You Home Tomorrow? It takes a deeper look at the latest in car technology, the societal implications of giving up the wheel, and the far-reaching impacts that self-driving cars could have on everything from insurance, to stop signs, to speeding tickets. You ll be surprised at how much you thought you knew about the new technology in cars, says Aaron Schachter, executive producer for WGBH Radio. 29 99.5 WCRB Stay Tuned to WCRB By Anthony Rudel 99.5 WCRB Station Manager Every weekday Cathy Fuller is your host from 9am to pm on WCRB. This month, I ve invited her to write about her day off and on the radio. Enjoy, then check out what is coming your way from the Boston Symphony Orchestra and our exciting new performance series WCRB In Concert. Cathy Fuller writes I ve had mornings when making coffee feels like a science project. It can be amusing (or dangerous) depending on how long it takes to get my brain going. Thank goodness for the radio. Mozart always sets my bumbling choreography on a path toward a bit of grace. And busy though I am, there s an enormous part of my spirit that s listening to the music with special attention. For my favorite five-year-old, it s a total bodyand-soul immersion. When Laura [Carlo] fires up Grieg s Hall of the Mountain King, he grabs a crayon and conducts himself into a frenzy. After chasing the clock and braving the traffic, settling into work requires a whole different mindset. That s when the incredible, blossoming presence of music can add beauty to your environment. And that s when I have the joy of joining you. I love supplying the music that transforms your thinking and brings the very best things into focus. I used to wonder about the radio term stay tuned. Are we like pianos? Was I out of tune? Sometimes it can feel that way. Getting overburdened with information can put you off balance. Staying tuned to great music helps reestablish yourself. So, I hope you ll tune in and stay tuned every weekday, when I ll keep you connected to Boston and fill your world with music! The BSO, Live from Symphony Hall (Saturdays at 8pm) Oct. 1: BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons leads a complete concert performance of Richard Strauss s opera, Der Rosenkavalier, starring soprano Renée Fleming as the Marschallin, and mezzo-soprano Susan Graham as Octavian. Oct. 8: Andris Nelsons conducts Brahms s A German Requiem, with soprano Camilla Tilling, baritone Thomas Hampson and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Also on the program, German composer Jörg Widmann s Trauermarsch (Funeral March) for piano and orchestra. Oct. 15: The young Czech conductor Jakob Hrůša makes his BSO debut, with violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann performing Bartók s Violin Concerto No.. Also on the program, Šárka, from Smetana s Ma Vlást (My Homeland), Mussorgsky s Night on Bald Mountain and Janácek s Taras Bulba, rhapsody for orchestra. Oct. : Cellist Yo-Yo Ma teams up with conductor Charles Dutoit for Elgar s ultra-romantic Cello Concerto. Dutoit begins the program with Walton s Portsmouth Point Overture. Oct. 9: Charles Dutoit leads a performance of Bartok s Bluebeard s Castle, with Hungarian mezzo-soprano Ildikó Komlósi as Judith and German baritone Matthias Goerne as Bluebeard. WCRB In Concert (Sundays at 7pm): Oct. : In Concert, with Celebrity Series Mezzo-soprano Susan Graham in recital, with pianist Bradley Moore, recorded at NEC s Jordan Hall. Schumann s masterful song-cycle Frauenliebe und-leben (A Woman s Love and Life) is the focus. Oct. 9: In Concert, with A Far Cry The Boston-based, conductor-less chamber orchestra performs music on the theme of Memory by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Elgar and Pärt, recorded at NEC s Jordan Hall. Oct. 16: In Concert, with Boston Baroque Music Director Martin Pearlman leads a performance of Mozart s The Magic Flute, with tenor Nicholas Phan as Prince Tamino, and soprano Leah Partridge as Pamina, recorded at NEC s Jordan Hall. Oct. 3: In Concert, with The Handel and Haydn Society Boston s venerable H&H wraps up its bicentennial with Handel s oratorio Saul, led by Artistic Director Harry Christophers, with baritone Jonathan Best in the title role. Oct. 30: In Concert, with Rockport Music. Pianist Vadym Kholodenko in recital, with music by Schumann and Scriabin, recorded at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport. 30 WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station WCAI s Campaign Coverage By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial Throughout the month of October, WCAI is your go-to source for coverage of local political campaigns. We re continuing a campaign-season tradition on The Point (weekdays 9am, 7pm rebroadcast), the daily public affairs program I host with News Director Sean Corcoran. The show, as it has done for more than a decade, will present debates between candidates for the state House of Representatives and Senate, focusing on issues affecting the Cape, Coast and Islands. Corcoran says the debates give listeners an opportunity to become familiar with the candidates positions. With fewer local media outlets covering regional elections, there is a greater need than ever to host debates and discussions with political candidates, he says. WCAI is committed to doing what it can to keep the electorate informed. The debates on The Point are a key component of that effort. Tune in to hear from the candidates, and if you ve got a pressing concern that you d like them to address, call in and you could be among the listeners who ask a question. If you miss a broadcast, don t worry. All of the debates What s on WCAI Online: capeandislands.org On-air: 90.1 Martha s Vineyard, 91.1 Nantucket, 94.3 Brewster, 89.7 HD3 Boston Monday Friday 6am 9am 10am 1pm 1pm pm 3pm 4pm 6:30 7pm 8pm 9pm 10pm 11pm 11:30 Saturday Morning Edition The Point The Diane Rehm Show The Takeaway Fresh Air On the Media (Mon) The Moth (Tue) This American Life (Wed) Studio 360 (Thu) Science Friday (Fri) BBC News (Mon Thu) All Things Considered Marketplace The Point The PBS NewsHour Fresh Air News from the BBC Heart and Soul (Fri) Editor Matt Roy Contributors Ron Bachman, Amy Yelin, Andrea Morris, Maria Bruno Ruiz, Anthony Rudel, Mindy Todd Designers Bill Miller, Tong-Mei Chan and candidate interviews will be posted on the election page of our website, capeandislands.org. In addition to our local coverage, WCAI also will carry WGBH News reporting on the ballot questions, along with the acclaimed election-year documentary The Choice, produced by WGBH s Frontline. As you know from elsewhere in this issue (page 11), The Choice 016 delivers the definitive background checks of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Everything is leading up to the General Election on Nov. 8, when we will combine our efforts with NPR to bring you reaction and analysis as the national and local results come in. Meanwhile, the news teams at WCAI and WGBH will fan out across the region to capture the evening s victory and concession speech highlights. 6am 7am 8am 10am 11am 1pm 1pm pm 3pm 4pm 5pm 6pm 8pm 9pm 10pm 1am BBC Update Living on Earth Weekend Edition Wait, Wait Don t Tell Me!
