2 NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR The Lunh Bunh is a straightahead sing hart in the style o the great igand arranger Sammy Nestio It has an easy and hopeully memorale melody in AABA orm, and a solo or 1st trumpet The piano also has a short solo statement at the eginning and the end o the hart, as ell as a e solo ills throughout There is an eightmeasure intro that also leads into the trumpet solo and ours again to end the hart Staato notes are very short and aented, ith ite Marato (or rootop) aents are detahed and aented Tenuto notes are very long, smooth, and onneted Quarter notes ith no artiulations are generally long ith ull value Rhythm Setion: The groove, hih starts ith the melody at m 9, should e played ith a driving quarternote eel This is largely the responsiility o the ass and drums The ass player should play strong steady quarter notes, hile the drummer emphasizes a solid hihat on eats 2 4, along ith a steady ride ymal pattern The guitar player should play in the style o reddie Green, the great Count Basie guitarist, meaning play the hords on every quarter note along ith the ass ut unlie the assline, the quarter notes are very short Also, I suggest the guitar player strum rom the elo, rather than the rist This ill help solidiy the groove y maing it easier or the guitarist to play in the poet Lastly, the guitar should not e too loud, as alane is alays a priority Setions to ous on or rehearsal: The importane o artiulation and note length should e stressed in rehearsal I reommend the students (and diretor) listen to the demo reording at alredom/donloads and then have a rie disussion aout aurate note lengths (ull value) and artiulations Aurate artiulation ill allo the musi to sound more interesting and varied The staatos are the ey henever a note has a staato, that indiates to play it very short Another tip to disuss is that in jazz musi, the last eighth note o a group o notes (to or more) is typially short Have the students voalize the irst to measures o the melody at m 9 Demonstrate and diret them to sing it as Dooooodoodot Dooooodoodot Emphasize the shortness o the dot sound and the smoothness o the doo sound Then have them play it on their horns, artiulating the same ay This is a great ay to ommuniate these type o musial details, and the students ill retain this inormation etter as ell Another good spot to rehearse all o the horns together is mm 7 8 Similarly, the opening igure in the tromones, rhythm, and ari sax is dependent on playing very short staato notes erhaps a good example o ho this opening line should sound is the lassi in anther theme song At m 57, the horn agrounds should e sot ehind the trumpet solo, ut should quily hange to at m 6, hen the line taes over and leads into the loudest setion o the hart, the shout setion (mm 65 7) ratie dynami ontrast y stressing these dynamis and then have the and play rom mm 57 7 The drum ill leading into m 65 (shout) should e energeti and exiting, letting everyone no that shout is aout to happen!
