It is designed as a test piee in the orm o a tone poem using themes rom Thaikovsky s allet San Lake. These are oven together into a ork that roadly ollos the ourmovement symphoni pattern. To a ertain extent the deeptive qualities o musial virtuosity are pitted against the pure qualities o melody and this antagonism epitomizes the test element o the piee. The musial poem (loosely taken rom the story o the original allet) depits the struggle eteen good and evil held around an enhanted lake. Ater a prologue, the irst part depits the mists o the lake (using Thaikovsky s amous theme) and an ensuing attle. A euphonium adenza asserts the ortitude o Siegried, the representative o true love. A series o harateristi danes ollos in hih Rothart, the malevolent protagonist, indues his daughter Odile to sedue Siegried. He resists and pronounes his love or Odette in a slo pas de deux. Hoever, during the susequent altz sequene Siegried eomes onused and gives ay. At the aroah o death the magi o the lake and lost innoene are mysteriously realled in a quiet passage that eerily evokes the Dane o the Cygnets. This reaakens him and the attle resumes, ut this time Siegried is triumphant and in the losing ars the mystial enhantment o the lake is reairmed. Stephen Roerts, 015 Born in London, Stephen Roerts studied horn and piano at the Royal College o Musi and gained a PhD in omposition at the University o Birmingham. He has an unusually ide portolio o ompositions, inluding orhestral and hamer orks or BBC Radio, musi or rass and ind ands, eduational piees and ommerial musi or ilm, television and radio. He has ritten extensively or rass, and 'Reletions o San Lake' is his third test piee or the British Open Brass Band Championships. His alaimed transription o Holst s 'Planets Suite' as used as the test piee in 00 and 'Araian Nights' as ommissioned or the 01 ontest. Other reent orks or rass inlude a Euphonium Conerto, premiered y David Childs and reorded y Steven Mead and 'The Snaring o the Sun', or the National Youth Brass Band o Ne Zealand, hih as seleted as the nd setion inals test piee or the 015 National Brass Band Championships. He has also reeived international ritial alaim or his sholarly reonstrutions o uninished orks y Mozart, reorded y the Orhestra o the Age o Enlightenment and the Hanover Band. For over tenty years Stephen Roerts as horn player ith the Fine Arts Brass Ensemle, and he has regularly perormed ith nearly all the UK s orhestras, rom the London Symphony Orhestra to the BBC Big Band. He irst eame involved ith rass ands during the 1980s as musial diretor o the Jones & Crossland Band and later the Desord Colliery Band amongst others. He has gained a onsiderale reputation as a suessul ondutor ith plenty o prizes on the ontesting iruit and resultant orldide demand as an experiened adjudiator. He has also held posts as Assoiate Condutor and Composer in Residene ith the English Symphony Orhestra, Proessor o Horn at the Birmingham Conservatoire and Leturer in Conduting at the University o Birmingham.
