2 Modular Pleum Fas The MPQN offers may of the same advatages of the veerable EPQN pleum fa. The MPQN ca be used as a sigle fa or i parallel to costruct a multiple fa system. By usig multiple MPQN fas i parallel, soud power levels i low octave bads ca be sigificatly reduced over alterative fa selectios. I additio, cosiderable axial space savigs is achieved over a sigle fa selectio. Fa Applicatio Pleum fas are uhoused fas desiged to operate iside of field-fabricated or factory-built air hadlig uits. The fa wheel pressurizes the etire surroudig air pleum i which the fa is istalled, allowig air ducts from ay directio to be directly coected to the air hadlig uit eclosure. This desig geerally saves space by elimiatig the fa housig, trasitios, ad diffusers withi the air hadlig uit. Pleum fas have foud a ready acceptace i the air coditioig idustry. I additio, the costructio Drive Ed View versatility, adaptability i the directio of the discharges, suitability for iteral isolatio ad applicatio of soud paels, ad geerally lower cost makes it a very popular fa arragemet. The MPQN fas, whe used i parallel, ca offer further advatages over a stadard pleum fa. By usig multiple fas i parallel, uiform flow ca be achieved with less axial legth i a give air hadlig uit. The use of multiple MPQN fas i parallel ca also serve to reduce soud levels, possibly elimiatig the eed for additioal soud atteuatio withi the uit. 3 MPQN Advatage The MPQN pleum fas offer uique performace features that are beeficial for may soud sesitive ad higher pressure applicatios. The fa system is advatageous by providig uiform air distributio dowstream of the fa, allowig for better air distributio through AHU compoets. The use of multiple fas i parallel allows a shorter AHU (i axial directio of flow), ad provides redudacy for critical fa applicatios. The MPQN features a 12-bladed airfoil wheel versus the 8- to 10-bladed wheels with most other competitio. The "Q" i the MPQN desigates for Better Noise Quality. Noise quality is a subjective descriptio for oise that is less objectioable. The desig provides lower soud power levels at the lower octave bads which are the most difficult to atteuate. Furthermore, the 12-bladed fa impeller offers a higher blade pass frequecy. This i tur trasfers soud power levels to the higher octave bads (Figure 1), which allows for easier atteuatio of the oise. Soud levels are ofte iflueced by the oise occurrig at the blade pass frequecy (Blade Pass Frequecy = RPM x Number of blades/60). I may applicatios, the use of the MPQN desig will move the blade pass frequecy from the 2d octave bad to the 3rd octave bad. Acoustic silecers will ormally perform about 10 db better i the 3rd bad. With the use of the 12-bladed impeller, soud quality is improved by reducig the chage of abrupt soud levels betwee eighborig octave bads, providig a more balaced soud level across the octave bads. Although the overall A-weighted soud power levels of a ie-bladed fa may be slightly lower, the soud "quality" of the 12-bladed MPQN fa may be desirable for the applicatio as it is more pleasig to the huma ear. The MPQN offers the beefit of reduced low-frequecy casig radiated oise due to the small lattice structure opeig ad ed reflectio. The isulated housig absorbs some oise geerated by the fa, ad the decreased size of the discharge opeig results i a degree of atteuatio due to ed reflectio. Figure 1 demostrates the soud compariso betwee the sigle pleum fa ad the multi-fa system with 12-bladed wheel ad isulated eclosure. The multifa system geerates less outlet soud power levels at the lower frequecies. 4 4 Costructio Features Wheels High efficiecy, o-overloadig airfoil wheels are provided o all sizes. Alumium wheels usig extruded alumium blades are stadard, a popular choice for applicatios requirig precisio balace ad improved reliability. Ilet Coes Heavy-gauge, spu steel ilet coes are closely matched to the wheel itake rim to esure efficiet ad quiet operatio. Serviceability Class II MPQN fas feature a bolt-o motor base allowig for easy service by slidig out the motor/ impeller assembly. Structural Frame Frames are costructed of heavy-gauge steel, cotiuously welded at all coectios for maximum Flow Measuremet System Piezometer Rig (Airflow Measurig System) A piezometer rig is available o pleum fas, as well as other Twi City Fa housed fas, as part of a airflow measurig system, based o the priciple of a flow ozzle. The ilet coe of the fa is used as the flow ozzle. The flow ca be calculated by measurig the pressure drop through the ilet coe. No tubes or sesors are iserted i the high velocity airstream which could obstruct airflow. The system cosists of a piezometer rig mouted at the throat ad a static pressure tap mouted o the face of the ilet coe. A differetial pressure trasducer ad digital display ca also be provided. The pressure drop is measured from the tap located o the face of the ilet coe to the piezometer rig i the throat. The ilet tap is coected to the high-pressure side of the trasducer ad the piezometer rig is coected to the low-pressure side. See diagram o right. Based o Twi City Fa laboratory tests, the system was determied to be accurate withi +/-5%. Soud Isulatio The sheet metal module ecloses soud isulatio for soud atteuatio. Isulatio is protected with both a vapor barrier for IAQ (idoor air quality) ad galvaized, perforated steel maitaiig soud atteuatio while prevetig isulatio sheddig o the air path side. Isolatio Sizes are desiged to operate at adequate vibratio levels where sprig isolatio is ot essetial. All sizes are desiged to mout directly oto sprig isolators whe vibratio isolatio is preferred. NOTE: Twi City Fa does ot recommed placemet of flow measurig probes iside the fa ilet coe i the path of airflow. These devices create disturbaces ad upredictable performace losses. Twi City Fa will ot be resposible for loss of performace due to such devices. Piezometer Rig Mouted at Throat of Ilet Coe Shaft Groudig Rig (SGR) Recommeded for all MPQN fas, a shaft groudig rig is mouted to the motor providig motor bearig protectio. By divertig variable frequecy drive (VFD) iduced stray voltages to groud through the shaft groudig rig istead of the motor bearigs, motor life is exteded. Twi City Bulleti 490

5 Arragemets ad Cofiguratios Arragemet 4 (Horizotal) Direct drive Arragemet 4 mouts the fa wheel directly oto the motor shaft. This arragemet provides a compact fa/motor uit which elimiates belt residue ad requires less maiteace tha other arragemets. For these reasos, Arragemet 4 modular pleum fas are widely used i clearoom, pharmaceutical, ad other critical applicatios. The MPQN ca be selected to provide desired performace at direct drive, sychroous, motor speeds. The MPQN ca also be selected to operate at peak efficiecy at o-sychroous motor speeds, through the use of a variable frequecy drive (VFD). Compact & Cofigurable Desig Space ad air-hadlig uit desig are ofte key cosideratios i the selectio of pleum fas, makig the compact, cofigurable MPQN Arragemet 4 a ideal choice. The Arragemet 4 cofiguratio places the motor moutig withi the framework of the fa itself. 11 Typical Specificatios Fas shall be Type MPQN cetrifugal pleum (plug) type, as maufactured by Twi City Fa & Blower, Mieapolis, Miesota. Fas shall have a sharply risig pressure characteristic extedig through the operatig rage ad cotiuig to rise beyod the peak efficiecy to esure quiet ad stable operatio. Fas shall have a o-overloadig desig with self-limitig horsepower characteristics ad shall reach a peak i the ormal selectio area. All fas shall be capable of operatig over the miimum pressure class limits as specified i AMCA s Stadard Performace Fas shall be tested i accordace with AMCA 210 ad AMCA 300 test stadards for air movig devices ad shall be guarateed by the maufacturer to deliver rated published performace levels. Fas shall be licesed to bear the AMCA certified ratigs seal for fa ilet soud, fa outlet soud, ad air performace.
