And at the begnnng of the 21st century, ths race for realty has contnued wth the emergence of 4K/Ultra HD (UHD) and n the next few years 8K systems. One exctng development to note s hgh dynamc range (HDR) technology that promses to provde better pxels. HDR can expand the range of contrast rato. For nstance, brght and dark parts of mages can be enhanced to be brghter or darker, hence offerng more depth. On the other corner are the premum ads-free provders led by Netflx, and also nclude Amazon Prme Vdeo, Hulu and Spotfy. Premum model earns more per hour of content consumed: Facebook s one of the most effectve ad supported publshers, and t makes around US$0.07 per hour of eyeballs. For nstance, f there are two bllon Facebook users usng the platform an hour a day, Facebook earns around US$12 bllon per quarter. Netflx, on the other hand, earns around US$0.20 per hour of content consumed, and has more headroom to grow. Content needs to be free for the ad-based model to work: The ad-based model s able to cover the cost of operatons only when the content s free, and s created by users. Examples of user-generated content platforms are Facebook, Instagram and Twtter. Content needs to be ad-free and premum for the subscrpton model to work: Consumers are wllng to pay a subscrpton fee only when there are no ads and there s premum content that s well-produced. Consumers do not lke ads: About 200 mllon consumers globally subscrbe to subscrpton servces such as Netflx and Amazon Prme Vdeo. Although an ncreasng number of consumers are wllng to pay for an ad-free experence, over 700 mllons devces around the world have ad blockers nstalled. Facebook Watch has been a damp squb so far: Facebook Watch, whle stll n ts early days, s not beng postoned as an ad-supported verson of Netflx, but as another verson of YouTube. Tough tmes ahead for all other content creators: Other than the top fve free publshers and the top fve premum publshers, all other content creators who are not nche do not have enough volume, and who are not specal wll struggle to monetse content both through advertsng and through subscrptons. The wnners wll be the top fve publshers n each category, wth Netflx and Facebook the bg wnners. Whle sports content consumpton s beng mpacted by many of the above changes, the one thng that makes t dfferent s that, for the majorty of the tme, sports s consumed lve. Snce the openng of ts studo and post-producton faclty at Televson Centre n London last September, Strctly Come Dancng, It Takes Two, and The Jonathan Ross Show, are some of the frst BBC productons to be recorded at the faclty. The faclty s set up for 4K/ UHD and HDR productons wth the nstallaton of a new fleet of TV cameras, screens and swtchers. For ths project, 22 Fujnon 4K/UHD HDR TV lenses were also nstalled, enablng productons to be shot n both 4K/UHD and HDR. The full Fujnon kt provded ncludes two Fujnon UA80x9 1.2x EXT, fve Fujnon UA14x4.5BE, and 15 Fujnon UA27x6.5BE lenses. Incorporatng a 1.2x extender n the exstng UA80x9, the UA80x9 1.2 zoom lens s desgned to support 4K/UHD, hgh contrast and HDR across the entre zoom range. In addton, usng the 1.2x extender, t covers the fnal length from 10.8mm n wde angle to 864mm n telephoto, enablng even further telephoto recordng n relay broadcastng of sports and concerts. The UA14x4.5BE s packed n a compact lghtweght package, and s able to cover the ultra wde-angle focal length of 4.5mm. The problem arses, he ponts out, when all of the nput modes do not match, and thus need to be made to match. He also advocates for a polcy of buyng smart, n contrast to buyng cheap, and to challenge the assumptons that have kept TV statons runnng for the past 50 years. As all of us face tghter budgets and ncreased demand for hgh-qualty content from our customers, we ll have to focus on utlsaton of all of our nfrastructure. Ths nclude not just cameras and vson mxers, but also cablng. In other words, f you have cablng that s sttng dle, you re bascally throwng money away. The competton of the future, O Nell concludes, wll not be comng from famlar sources lke other TV statons or outsde broadcast (OB) provders wth smlar equpment. Instead, t wll be the Googles or Netflxes of the world, backed by large amounts of captal. They wll be able to make the choce to get the best systems avalable, and TV statons who do not adapt fast enough are settng themselves up to fal. Another company that s pro- vdng support for an IP world s Lynx Technk, whch announced tself as a member of the Allance for IP Meda Solutons (AIMS) earler ths year. Ths, says Sebastan Schaffrath, CTIO of Lynx Technk, s an obvous move as SMPTE ST 2110 proves tself as the de facto standard for uncompressed vdeo over IP. Wth greenmachne, Lynx Technk provdes a versatle software-based processng platform that s deally suted for both SDI and IP nfrastructures.
