5 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 DSNET ADVANTAGES The DSNet Digital Signage Netwrk is designed t be a simple, reliable yet ultra-scalable, audi vide bradcasting netwrk that is highly cmpatible t mst, if nt all, digital signage applicatins. Depending n the requirements f yur applicatin, the DSNet system can easily be scaled up frm several mnitrs t thusands f mnitrs, all utputting the same vide and audi stream. Hence, it can be easily used in a small shp r in a large supermarket. As simple and effective as an ultra-scalable structure, the DSNet system des nt interfere in any way with yur multimedia player r cmputer, r with any Digital Signage applicatin running n it. Instead, the whle DSNet system just serves as a multimedia distributin netwrk. DSNet nt nly extends but als multiplies yur display panels t where yu want them t be, either at cnvenience stres, supermarkets, shpping malls, mega-stres, campus, theaters, r ther applicatin scenaris like thse n large transprt vehicles such as cean liners, jumb airplanes, mass transprtatin systems, etc. DSNet can handle a quasi unlimited number f mnitrs distributed in an area f apprximately 300m radius. The surface cvered by DSNet is sufficient fr a large supermarket. The audi-visual cntent is bradcasted at lwer cst. With DSNet, at cmparable price, yu have mre screens and thus yu imprve the impact f yur digital signage campaigns. DSNet als carries bi-directinal RS-232 serial cmmunicatins at up t bps t make pssible the setup f display panels by the player and the return f infrmatin frm tuch screens. 1.2 DSNET NETWORK ARCHITECTURE DSNet is based n three devices: The K5DS-BR8 r K5DS-BR16 bradcaster is the main unit which receives the multimedia and RS232 streams, frm the Player. It encdes and bradcasts them t varius clusters f mnitrs via CAT5 cables. With respect t the Player it emulates the peratin f a mnitr. It is als cnnected t the lcal area netwrk t allw fr remte r lcal administratin. The K5DS-RC2 receivers are able t receive and decde the vide, the audi and the data stream injected by the Bradcaster int the cable and t frward it n tw display panels. They manage the RS232 bidirectinal cmmunicatin allwing the cntrl f the screens by the Player and pssibly the infrmatin feedback in case f tuch screens. The receivers have a daisy-chain prt allwing a wiring in series fr mre upward scalability. The K5DS-SP splitter can prve t be necessary in large cnfiguratins. It frwards the incming stream t eight utputs and als frwards the serial data cming frm the eight utputs t the single input. Thus, in additin t chaining receivers, ne can als use splitters t create stars. In any case, a splitter can als be used t upscale the display capacity frm where a single receiver is riginally placed. 5

The DSNet netwrk can be managed remtely, ver a lcal area netwrk r ver the Internet, by means f a Java prgram that can run n all ppular platfrms. This prgram discvers autmatically the DSNet netwrk architecture (Figure 2). Everything, frm the verall system settings dwn t grup settings and t per-receiver settings, can be easily cnfigured. The administratrs can in a muse click turn n and ff mnitrs, either individually r grup wise, r perfrm glbal actins n all the mnitrs, as well as carry ut audi/vide adjustments fr audi/vide utput ptimizatin. Nte: In case f large installatin, we recmmend yu install DSNet Manager n a ntebk r a laptp and yu access the Bradcaster via wireless LAN r via the Internet by using a 3G key. All settings are sent by the Bradcaster t the Receivers and Splitters acrss the Cat5 cables. DSNet des nt require yu t risk yur life climbing a ladder with a screw driver. The vide and audi adjustments can be carried ut in a few secnds lking at the display panels and mving the sliders f DSNet Management until the result is perfect. All settings are digitally saved int EEPROMs. 6

8 2 INSTALLING DSNET DEVICES 2.1 INSTALLING THE BROADCASTER UNIT Figure 3: Bradcaster Cnnectins 1. Cnnect the bradcaster unit t yur Ethernet LAN. Nte that the bradcaster features tw Ethernet prts and an internal Ethernet switch. If yur Player is already cnnected t the Ethernet netwrk, use the Player Ethernet cable fr the bradcaster and cnnect the Player t the bradcaster with a shrt patch cable. Yu dn t need an extra Ethernet cable. 2. Check the presence f the bradcaster n yur netwrk by pinging the bradcaster s default IP address: Use the prvided cables t cnnect the vide and audi utputs f the Player t the VGA and audi prts f the regin labeled PLAYER. 8

9 4. If yur applicatin requires an RS232 attachment, cnnect the Player RS232 prt t the RS232 female prt f the bradcaster. Nte that we prvide n RS232 cable in the package. Yu just need a simple straight-thrugh male/female DSUB9 serial cable fr this purpse. 5. If there was a display mnitr cnnected t the Player, cnnect it t the VGA prt f the bradcaster lcated in the regin labeled MONITOR. Yu can als cnnect a set f speakers t the audi utput prt. Nte that the mnitr and the ludspeakers cnnected t the bradcaster will behave the same as the remte display panels. 9

10 2.2 ADDING SPLITTER AND RECEIVER UNITS Intercnnect the splitters and receivers with UTP CATx (preferably CAT5) cables in rder t create a netwrk similar t figure 1. The trunk f the netwrk is the bradcaster. Splitters create 8-branch stars. The receivers can be wired in series thank t their System Out chaining prt. There is n fficial limit and it depends a lt n cable length and quality, but we recmmend nt creating mre than 5 levels starting frm the bradcaster, fr example, 5 receivers, r 1 splitter and 4 receivers, r 2 splitters and 3 receivers. The ttal length frm the bradcaster prt t the last receiver shuld nt be greater than 300m. If the bradcaster is lcated at its best place, which is the center f the DSNet netwrk, it means that yu can cver an area f 600m f diameter. In fact it can certainly be mre if yu use splitters, but let s keep 300m max as a rule f thumb. 2.3 CONNECTING DISPLAY PANELS TO THE RECEIVERS The K5DS-RC2 receiver can supprt tw display panels. Cnnect ne r tw display panels t each receiver by using the apprpriate cables, same as if they were directly cnnected t the Player. The receiver has DTE type RS232 prts, which means they are similar t thse f a persnal cmputer. These prts frward the serial data sent by the Player t the display panels (r any ther device). If yu set them as bidirectinal int DSNet Manager, they can als transmit the data received frm the display panel (r any ther surce) t the Player. Nte that the settings f the receiver RS232 prts dn t have t be identical t thse f the bradcaster with respect t the player. This is nt a direct cnnectin. Data is carried at much higher speed int DSNet. 10

11 3 DSNET MANAGER 3.1 LAUNCHING DSNET MANAGER After yu have installed the DSNet netwrking devices and the display panels, yu can run DSNet Manager t see if everything wrks prperly. Yu must have the JRE (Java Runtime Envirnment) installed n yur client cmputer / ntebk befre yu can run DSNet Manager. The latest JRE is available fr dwnlad at Cpy the DSNet Manager applicatin dsnetwrk-dist.jar (a JAVA prgram) t the netwrked persnal cmputer r ntebk that has a netwrk access t the bradcaster. Run DSNet Manager either by clicking n dsnetwrk-dist.jar. If it des nt wrk, pen an administratr cnsle and type: java jar dsnetwrk-dist.jar Enter the IP address and prt number in the frmat: IP_address:prt_number By default: :5000 Click OK. The lgin prmpt fr user ID and passwrd pens. By default, the user ID and passwrd are: User ID: User Passwrd: superuser superu Click OK t get access t the bradcaster. 12 3.2 DSNET MANAGER MAIN WINDOW This windw shws the architecture f the DSNet netwrk, i.e., a tree starting frm the bradcaster. The title f the windw is the name f the bradcaster t which yu are cnnected. Each device is symblized by an icn. A bar menu gathers all netwrk-level peratins. All device cnfiguratin bxes are accessed by left clicking n the device icn. Left clicking pens a lcal menu that depends n the device. Cncerning the bradcaster, lcal settings such as cnfiguratin f serial interfaces, are made by clicking n the bradcaster icn like ther devices. Mre glbal settings such as TCP/IP and time settings are accessed frm the windw menu. All device utput prts are symblized by a small RJ45 icn attached t the prt number. nc means n device cnnected. The RJ45 icns get red in case f faulty cable. Nte that input prts are nt drawn fr sake f clarity. The mnitr icns are dynamic and can change accrding t the state f each mnitr. The blue clr indicates that the vide is enabled. The grey clr indicates that the vide is disabled. A small ludspeaker indicates that the audi is enabled. A duble arrw indicates that the serial cnnectin is bidirectinal. Left click n a mnitr icn t prceed t the mnitr settings. Nte that a mnitr with disabled vide displays a black screen, but it is nt pwered dwn and the audi can still wrk. A label is bund t each device. It permits t wrk by names. This label is kept in the device EEPROM s that it des nt change if yu mdify the netwrk architecture. If there is n name already defined, a default name based n the device type and lcatin is suggested. Yu can change it any time by left clicking n the device icn and selecting Change label 12 Figure 4: DSNet Manager Main Windw

13 A check bx is attached t each mnitr. The purpse f this check bx is t create grups f mnitrs that can receive grup cmmands. Fr example, yu can disable the audi r the vide f a grup f mnitrs crrespnding t sme area sectin. See 3.9. Yu can check and uncheck the mnitr check bxes independently by right clicking n the mnitr icns. If yu right click n sme higher-level device icn, such as a receiver, a splitter, r the bradcaster, yu check r uncheck all mnitrs attached t this device. Hence, by right clicking n the bradcaster icn yu can check r clear all mnitrs f the netwrk. Faulty cables can be detected by the bradcaster. The bradcaster prt becmes red and the prt is autmatically disabled. Fix the prblem and click n the prt t re enable it. Nte: Checking bxes with right clicks and getting access t prperties with left clicks may seem unusual. The purpse is t get easier access t main cmmands. The check bxes are just secndary in this applicatin. Here s the icn cnventin fr DSNet: B8 means it is an 8-prt Bradcaster. S8 means it is an 8-prt Splitter. 01 means it is the Receiver Prt #1, and NC means N device Cnnected. Faulty cable attached t Bradcaster prt means it is the Splitter Prt #2, and R2 means it is a 2-prt Receiver that is currently cnnected t that prt. These icns represent all pssible states f a mnitr. Each mnitr can have the vide n (blue) r ff (grey), the audi n (lud speaker) r ff, and an unidirectinal r bidirectinal cnnectin (duble arrw) Nte that the mnitr label is kept int the receiver memry. It des nt fllw the mnitr if yu attach it t anther receiver. Nte: all labels attached t icns such as 8-prt Bradcaster r 8-prt Splitter1 can be changed by the user 13

14 3.3 DSNET MANAGER MAIN MENU <File> Save Settings t File: save all settings t a file fr future uplading f the same cnfiguratin Restre Settings t File: use a previusly saved cnfiguratin file t restre the DSNet system t the same cnfiguratin with all the same settings. Restre Factry Settings: restre the DSNet system t the factry default settings. Upgrade Sftware: upgrade the Bradcaster sftware by uplading the upgrade file via the DSNet Manager Sftware interface. Save User Name and Passwrd: Save the user name and passwrd, s that yu wn t have t type in bth every time yu want t access the DSNet system via the DSNet manager sftware interface. Exit (Shift + X): clse the DSNet Manager windw <Main> TCP/IP Settings: cnfigure the TCP/IP settings such as Hst Name, Dmain Name, as well as IP address, netwrk mask, Gateway, DSN, etc.. And, als yu can cnfigure the specific prt base that yu will use fr the Bradcaster access (within a range f prt 5000 ~ 5150). If yu need t use DHCP, yu can als specify DHCP usage. Date and Time: Set the date and time fr the DSNet system. Yu can sync the Bradcaster time with the cmputer time. And als yu can specify tw NTP time servers t synchrnize with. Rescan Netwrk (F5): Rescan the netwrk when yu need t update he Netwrk Tree. Update Receivers and Splitters: update the firmware n the Receivers and Splitters frm the resident sftware/firmware n the Bradcaster. Default Netwrk Tree: Clear all the mnitr listing and reset all the labels t their default values, then prceed t a netwrk rescan. Yu can d this when yu need t reset all the labels and perfrm a rescan f the whle system. Redraw Netwrk Tree (F6): Redraw the Netwrk Tree. <Lg> Lg (F7): the lgging activity will recrd the client access IP and als the imprtant system messages and errr messages. <Grups> New Grup: set up a new Grup. T jin mnitrs t a grup, yu need first check them and then set up a new grup. List f Grups: Give a listing f all Grups available. Send Cmmand t Checked Mnitrs: Send cmmands such as Vide ON/OFF, Audi ON/OFF and als the audi vlume adjustment cmmand t the Mnitr itself via RS-232 interface. Als yu can set the serial cnnectin parameters n the Receiver side. <Users> New User: Set up a new user accunt. Edit User: Edit a user accunt. 14

Abut: Cpyright page f the DSNet Manager. 3.4 CHANGING THE TCP/IP SETTINGS In the main menu, select Main/TCP/IP settings t change the settings f the bradcaster TCP/IP netwrk interface. Nte that just after yu change the TCP/IP settings, yu may lse the cntact t the bradcaster and yu may have t recnnect at new IP address and prt base Figure 5: TCP/IP Settings The default settings are shwn n figure abve. Yu can change the Prt Base if it cnflicts with anther applicatin f if there are several bradcasters n yur LAN that are accessed via the same Internet IP address. In this last case, use different Prt Base setting n each bradcaster and cnfigure the prt mapping f yur gateway accrdingly. Use DHCP allws the bradcaster t autmatically get its IP address/netwrk Mask/Gateway/DNS frm the DHCP server in service n yur LAN. Hst Name is the name that will appear as title f the DSNet main windw when yu cnnect t this bradcaster. 15

16 3.5 RESCANNING THE NETWORK The DSNet audivisual netwrk is autmatically scanned at first start. Hwever each time yu add sme device, r if the netwrk diagram is empty, r if all mnitrs are grey, r if yu think that there are missing elements, prceed t a manual netwrk rescan. T d this, select Main/Rescan Netwrk int the menu, r simply press the F5 key. The bradcaster will enter in dialg with all netwrked devices in rder t build a new netwrk map. This peratin des nt remve labels that are written in device EEPROMs. Figure 6: Rescan Netwrk Rescan prvides an updated diagram f the netwrk with all the dwnstream Splitters and Receivers as well as the current status f each device including the display panels and the audi speakers, etc. The listing als shws frth the prt status f each Receiver Prt. If the rescan fails, just press F5 again until it wrks. Hwever dn t press F5 while a rescan is ging n. 3.6 UNDERSTANDING THE LEDS All DSNet netwrk prts f all devices have an LED indicatr. The mst imprtant thing yu must understand is DSNet is nt an Ethernet netwrk. The LEDs dn t indicate that there is a physical cnnectin between tw devices. As a DSNet cnnectin is much mre cmplex than an Ethernet ne, the LEDs have a different meaning, which is a little bit mre subtle. The LEDs f audivisual prts f DSNet devices indicate that the crrespnding prt (input r utput) is pen. They reflect the bradcaster internal netwrk diagram. Any cable can carry audivisual stream nly if bth sides are cnnected t pen prts, i.e. with LED lit n bth sides. The LEDs shw the enabled paths. There is smething wrng if a cable is cnnected t a disabled prt. Remve the cable r run a Rescan (F5) There is smething wrng if the LED f a prt that has n cable plugged is turned n. Prceed t a Rescan (F5) Nte: After a Rescan, the LEDs shuld be in accrdance with the cabling. If nt, check the cables and devices that make prblems. 16

17 3.7 OPTIMIZING THE CABLE CONNECTIONS FOR VIDEO Nte: As mnitr and receivers, might be hundreds f meters away frm the Bradcaster unit. It is very cnvenient t run DSNet Manager n a ntebk r laptp featuring a wireless access r equipped with a 3G key SETTING UP THE RECEIVER OR THE SPLITTER FOR BEST VIDEO Manage s that the player sends a fixed image, preferably the image generated by the prgram screentest.exe available frm the Prsum Web site. Figure 7: Test image generated by screentest.exe In the netwrk diagram, lcate the crrespnding mnitr icn, which represents the physical mnitr that yu want t adjust the vide parameters f. T make sure this is the right mnitr yu can click n the mnitr icn and int the Prperties bx, turn the vide ff and n. Yu shuld see the mnitr reacting t yur cmmands. Then, click n the icn f the receiver t which the mnitr is attached. Select Prperties Nte: Tuning the vide fr ne receiver has n effect n the next receiver attached t the chaining prt. With regard t cable settings, the receivers are independent. Thus the rder in which the receivers are adjusted has n imprtance. 17

18 Select this receiver t adjust the vide f these mnitrs The settings have n effects n this mnitr Figure 8: Receiver Selectin fr Cable Settings Under the Cable Settings tab, yu can adjust varius parameters that will have an effect n the vide quality f the tw mnitrs attached t the receiver: Cmpensatin: vide sharpness Gain: vide brightness Red Shift: red shift versus green Blue Shift: blue shift versus green Mve the sliders until yu get the best image quality. It shuld nt take mre than 10 secnds. If yu cannt get a perfect image, it means that yur cable des nt fit DSNet requirements. 19 bad RJ45 cnnectin Figure 10: Befre and After RGB shift Adjustment RECOMMENDED CABLES Since clrs are carried in different twisted pairs, they may arrive at the end f the cable at slightly different timing because all pairs dn t have exactly same length. This shift effect called delay skew is mre imprtant in CAT5e and CAT6 cables because the difference f length is intentinally increased by cable makers t minimize the crsstalk between the pairs. Keeping the crsstalk lw is ne f the main challenges fr high-speed Ethernet transmissins. We dn t have exactly same prblems fr carrying vide, and cables rated fr higher frequencies than 250MHz are nt the best nes fr DSNet. Here are the characteristics f a gd DSNet cable: UTP Cat5 AWG 24 wires made f 100% slid cpper (watch ut cpper clad cables) Delay skew 0.20ns/m, i.e. 60ns fr 300m. Characteristic impedance = 100 Ω; DC resistance 10 Ω/100m; Capacitance 4.6nF/100m; Attenuatin at 50 MHz 52dB fr 300m. 19

20 3.8 SETTING UP THE MONITORS Click n any f the mnitr icn and select Prperties Click n the Audi Vide tab. Check r uncheck Vide ON t turn the vide ON r OFF. When the vide is ff, the mnitr displays a black screen; hwever it is nt pwered ff. Check r uncheck Audi ON t turn the audi ON r OFF. Use the slide bar t adjust the audi vlume. Nte: The audi settings apply t bth mnitrs. Since mnitrs attached t the same receiver are suppsed t be clse t each ther, it is nt necessary t have independent audi settings. Figure 11: Mnitr Audi/Vide Settings If yur mnitrs have a serial attachment, click n the Cnnectin tab. Chse the data rate and specify if the cnnectin is bidirectinal. The data rate can be different frm the Player serial interface data rate. Under the DDC tab yu can capture the mnitr DDC infrmatin and send it t the Bradcaster. Under certain perating systems, persnal cmputers need t get the DDC infrmatin prvided by the cnnected mnitr in rder t adjust their vide settings in accrdance with the mnitr capabilities. Withut this infrmatin they use a default mdel that may prve t be very restrictive. The Bradcaster will recrd this captured data and will use it fr its DDC emulatin, s that the Player behave exactly like if it is directly cnnected t the selected mnitr. 20 Figure 12: Capture and Send Mnitr DDC Infrmatin

21 3.9 GROUPING MONITORS A grup f mnitrs is just a list f mnitrs assciated with a name and stred int the bradcaster Flash memry. Grups f mnitrs can verlap and there is n restrictin abut their cntent. The purpse f grups is t send cmmands t several mnitrs in a single peratin. Fr example, disable the audi r the vide f a grup lcated in sme area sectin. If there are several tens f mnitrs in this area, it is nt cnvenient t send the same cmmand t each f them ne by ne. This is why DSNet Manager allws creating grups f mnitrs. When yu invke a grup, all mnitrs in the grup (and nly them) are checked in the netwrk diagram. Yu can then send cmmands t the checked mnitrs. T create a grup, first check the mnitrs that will be members f the grup. Fr example in the example prvided n Figure 13, right click the receiver Left Wing Rm t select all mnitrs f the branch. Then in the main menu select Grups/New Grup. Fill in the name f the grup and click OK. 22 3.10 SENDING COMMANDS TO CHECKED MONITORS Check the mnitrs by right clicking n their icn. Yu can check all mnitrs in a branch by right clicking n the device at the base f the branch. Fr example, click n Left Wing Rm t check mnitrs MLF1, MLF2, M31 and M32. Yu can als invke a grup f mnitrs. 23 3.11 UPGRADING THE BROADCASTER SOFTWARE T upgrade the DSNet bradcaster sftware n the main menu, click n File/Upgrade Sftware Use the Brwse buttn t select the upgrade file and click Upgrade. D nt interrupt the upgrade prcess that can be lng when perfrmed thrugh the Internet. There are several phases alternating data uplad and Flash memry write. Please sit tight until the message telling the prcess is cmplete. 24 3.12 UPDATING THE FIRMWARE OF SPLITTERS AND RECEIVERS On user request, the bradcaster can prceed t the uplad f the firmware f all r any ne f the splitters and receivers cnnected t the DSNet netwrk. T update the firmware f ALL devices n the DSNet netwrk, select Main/Update Receivers and Splitters, and click OK in the cnfirmatin bx: The bradcaster will update nly the devices that have a firmware lder than which ne is int the bradcaster Flash memry. T update the firmware f a single device, click n the device icn int the netwrk diagram and select Prperties. Select the Maintenance tab and click n Frce Firmware Update. It just uplads the firmware t the device frm the bradcaster. The firmware is upladed anyway. It is the nly way t dwngrade firmware. 24

25 3.13 NO VIDEO TROUBLESHOOTING 1. Check the DSNet Manager Netwrk diagram and see if the mnitr and receiver that are in questin have a crrespnding icn n the netwrk diagram. If yu cannt find, try t perfrm a Rescan (F5) s that the DSNet system can find them crrectly. 2. Check if the LEDs f all device prts that make the path t this mnitr are turned n. If nt, perfrm a Rescan (F5). 3. Check the pwer status f the receiver and the mnitr t see whether they are pwered n prperly. If nt, pwer up the receiver. 4. Check the cabling status frm the bradcaster t the receiver. Fix any lse cable r dangling cable if any. 5. Check the Player cmputer attached t the bradcaster t see if it is nw giving ut any vide cntents. If nt, yu shuld run the Player again t give vide cntents. 6. D yu have vide n ther mnitrs n the same receiver, r n ther mnitrs n different receivers? If yu have nrmal vide utput n ther mnitrs, then yu can lcate the prblem within mre limited segment specific t a receiver r mnitr. 7. Check the reslutin f the vide frm the Player t see if it is within 1080p specificatin. 8. Check the vertical refresh rate f the vide t see if any peculiar refresh rate is nw being used. If s, try a standard ne such as 60Hz. 9. Check if the prblematic mnitr that is withut vide utput is very different frm ther mnitrs that shw nrmal vide. If s, try t relcate the mnitr t ther mnitr prt n ther receivers. Or yu can try t capture the DDC data frm that mnitr and send it t the bradcaster fr DDC emulatin. Then restart the Player again t fit in the DDC emulatin that is newly adpted by the bradcaster. Hwever, yu have t check the DDC data captured frm that riginal prblematic mnitr can wrk fine with itself r ther riginally nrmal mnitrs. 10. Smetimes a gd quality cable can drastically imprve the vide quality and reduce ptential prblem especially when the extensin distance is lnger. 11.
