We honored two employees this year: Marilyn Schneider (10 years) and Karen Thompson (5 years). We appreciate their dedication and the strengths they each bring to the Library. The topic of customer service came up on more than one occasion. Our employees cited the joy of working as a team to meet our goals and serve the public. The Library s continued success and ability to evolve to meet the changing needs in our community is, in large part, due to the ongoing commitment and outstanding work ethics of our employees. It is an added bonus that many of our employees share their talents and creative pursuits in the workplace, which often results in the varied programs and events offered at the Library. We are truly committed to meeting the needs of the citizens in Bismarck and Burleigh County and working toward our vision of offering personal enrichment to all. Well, now you may check out past issues of adult and teen magazines. Over the past year, our serials staff and volunteers have been barcoding old issues once the new issue arrives. These archived magazines are kept on shelves in the Library s lower level and in the teen area. Generally, past issues are retained for one or two years, but some titles are retained for five or more years. Current issues of adult and teen magazines, located on the main level, still may not be checked out. Archived issues with a Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library barcode on the front cover are available for checkout, and all children s magazines may be checked out. The checkout period is seven days, and five magazines may be borrowed at a time. 2 Fall
3 Updates From Your Friends Greetings from the Friends of the Bismarck Public Library! As the season turns from summer to fall, we look ahead to our major fundraiser of the year, the fall used book sale. The sale will take place October 1-3 in the Library s meeting rooms See the newsletter insert for complete details. We have a fantastic selection of high quality used books ready for the sale, and we hope you are as excited as we are to kick things off at 7:00 AM on October 1! Pulitzer Prize-winning author Elizabeth Fenn The Friends of the Bismarck Public Library sponsored a number of fantastic programs and projects at the Library over the summer. We were pleased to be able to sponsor the appearance of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Elizabeth Fenn, who spoke to a full capacity crowd about her book Encounters at the Heart of the World: a History of the Mandan People. Another large audience was entertained by folksinger and autoharpist Adam Miller, who presented a program of songs and stories in honor of Labor Day. Local author Norma Knapp gave a talk about her memoir Scoria Roads. The Friends also funded the purchase of six new laptop computers to be used for public computer training and other Library-sponsored workshops. 6 Puppets Speak by Colette, a Puppet Friend of the Children s Library What a busy summer it was! It is hard to believe that fall is here and we are donning warmer jackets. For our part, we puppets have been cleaning up all the Lego bricks from the club meetings and big build-off during the summer. We have also been helping count numbers for those summer readers they were busy: 237 children participated in Summer Reading, collectively reading 388,408 minutes!! Wow!! And now we are ready to embrace the autumn season. The dogs will be returning to read with kids in our B.A.R.K. program, the book club will be discussing some fun titles, Lego Club was active this summer! and Ali LaRock will once again be painting a picture for us this time the theme is everyone s favorite wizard, Harry Potter. Northern Plains Dance will visit in December to treat us to a preview of their performance of The Nutcracker. We puppets have also heard a rumor that Santa Claus will be back to the Library this December, so we are pretty excited about that. We are already making our wish lists!! Library and Friends Participate in L3ND Institute The Library, along with the Friends of the Bismarck Public Library and other local organizations, was fortunate to be accepted into a special program sponsored by the Otto Bremer Foundation. L3ND (Libraries and Literacy Leadership North Dakota) is a leadership institute that offers education and mentoring to participants with the goal of helping to build the strength and integrity of libraries and literacy programs within Bremer Bank communities. There is also a grant awarded to all participants in the Institute. The Library s partners for the Institute are: The Adult Learning Center (Bismarck Public Schools), Bismarck Global Neighbors (a New Americans support organization), and the Friends of the Bismarck Public Library. Representing the Library at the various meetings and training sessions are Reference and Adult Services Librarian Sarah Matthews and Head of Youth Services Traci Juhala. After the initial meetings in May, the Bismarck partners decided on three goals for the Institute: 1) Developing community conversation groups for English language learners to practice their new skills; 2) Completing a community literacy needs assessment to determine the greatest needs; and 3) Promoting digital literacy. The first goal is being implemented this fall. Community conversation groups of native English-speakers and English language learners are meeting on Monday evenings at the Library through November 16. For more information about the Institute or the programs being developed, please contact either Sarah (smatthews@bismarcklibrary.org) or Traci (tjuhala@bismarcklibrary.org). 6 Fall
