2 Cooser s Note As youngsters growing u on the west coast o Scotland, my brother and I ell heir to an old valved radiogram which rovided us with our irst exeriences o radio broadcasts. On the short wave signal, and through the static, we could ick u a whole range o rogrammes rom across the Atlantic. I articularly recall the baseball games, the American accents o the announcers roviding a window to a evocative world ar removed rom our small Ayrshire town. These memories orm the basis o Radio City. The work is set in three movements, each introduced by a astiche radio announcer narrative written by Phili Coutts. The irst, City Noir, is a nod towards Raymond Chandler's eonymous rivate eye Phili Marlow and the dark cityscae o 1940s Caliornia. Movement two, Cae Rouge, takes its title rom the main restaurant in New York's amous Hotel Pennsylvania. Two o the most amous band leaders o the 1940s, trombonists Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey, broadcast live rom the cae on numerous occasions and the movement echoes with a collage o imagined sounds rom the eriod. The inale, Two-Minute Mile, derives rom an event dubbed in the USA as "the most exciting two minutes in sort", namely the Kentucky Derby. The virtuoso soloist igurations have their roots in Kentucky bluegrass iddle music, with the galloing bluegrass clogdancing rhythms roviding the backdro. His music or brass and wind is erormed across the globe, rom China, Taiwan, Jaan, Korea and Singaore in the Far East, across North and South America and in every major Euroean country. Yes, olks, it's the most exciting two minutes in sorts. The crowd is at ever-itch rom Millionaire's row to the acked inield, it's mint jules all round as the arty gets into ull swing. Who will win this year's the Run or the Roses? We ll know soon enough as the horses take their laces in the starting gate. On the stand side, Vanity Fair is taking his time about it; Sea View circles once more just to be sure. Now they're all in...
