3 Sungji Hong Ficus enim non lorebit or SSAA voices 201, ca. Ficus enim non lorebit is a setting o the book o Habakkuk. I chose three verses (Habakkuk :1-19) and cast the work in three sections. It exlores various vocal tessitura and textures. It is scored or emale voices (SSAA) and was coosed during the sring o 201 in Seoul, Korea. Ficus enim non lorebit is written or Lorelei Ensemble. H. Sungji Hong s Ficus enim non lorebit sets the inal verses o Habakkuk, one o the twelve Minor Prohets. In the oening verses o chater 1, Habakkuk notably questions the wisdom o God: Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are beore me; there is strie, and conlict abounds (Habakkuk 1:a) His doubt is not unamiliar, burdened with the weight o a allen world. Hong sets the inal verses o the book a rayer in a time o overty and conlict (the rise to ower o the Babylonians, c.612 BCE). Desite his doubt and the darkness that surrounded his situation, Habakkuk chooses to rejoice. Hong dislays both urity and discord though stark unisons and oen sonorities, juxtaosed with thick arallel dissonance. She chooses to set the oening descrition o overty and loss with austere and atient homohony. It is not until the seaker rejoices ( Ego autem in Domino ) that the three-art texture thickens to our unsettled voices, sliding in labored arallel augmented triads, tritones and minor seconds.
