The wrld premiere symphnic expansin f Valerie Cleman s Umja, a Philadelphia Orchestra cmmissin fr pening weekend, sets the stage fr a seasn-lng (and beynd) celebratin f wmen s vices. Audiences will hear cmpsitins by 12 wmen: Lera Auerbach, Lili Bulanger, Anna Clyne, Valerie Cleman, Zsha Di Castri, Luise Farrenc, Elena Firsva, Gabriela Lena Frank, Vivian Fung, Jessica Hunt, Betsy Jlas, and Raminta Šerkšnytė. The Philadelphia Orchestra celebrates this milestne by perfrming music by cmpsers f tday in dialgue with Beethven s symphnies in a cncentrated fur-week frmat, March 12 thrugh April 5, The Orchestra has cmmissined wrks by Cmpser-in-Residence Gabriela Lena Frank and a diverse grup f cmpsers frm her Creative Academy f Music, wh will ffer newly written wrks that will challenge, inspire, and push bundaries, creating fresh perspectives n the relevance f Beethven s legacy tday. Beethven passinately decried the frces f intlerance at play in his wn lifetime, and he cded bth his dismay and ardent ptimism in music. Withut dubt, this is in line with the philsphical heartbeat f my Creative Academy f Music, said Frank. 5 Beethven s Pian Cncert N. 4, perfrmed by Yefim Brnfman and paired with cntemprary cmpser Vivan Fung s Dust Devils, will bring the Orchestra back t its riginal hme at the Academy f Music fr its first subscriptin cncerts utside f Verizn Hall since The prgram als features Rachmaninff s Symphny N. 3, which received its wrld premiere n that very stage in The Orchestra will als have the unique privilege f presenting all nine symphnies nt nly in Philadelphia, but als in New Yrk at Carnegie Hall during the same timeframe, as part f Nézet-Séguin s Carnegie Hall Perspectives series fr the seasn. Music that Transfrms The seasn will shwcase significant artistic wrks that tell stries that transfrm and transcend their art frm. Audiences can experience wrks by 17 living cmpsers, including Jhn Adams, wh will lead his wn Scheherazade.2, Dramatic Symphny fr Vilin and Orchestra, featuring the artist fr whm it was written, vilinist Leila Jsefwicz. Adams s wrk was inspired by the plight f wmen in histry; his musical explratin f the present-day struggle f wmen in a patriarchal sciety reveals a mdern-day Scheherazade, a clever and fearless wman cnfrnting ppressin. I imagine a Scheherazade wh is nt just a clever and inventive wife caught in an impssible situatin, but rather an empwered wman, bth sensuus and capable f fighting back, said Adams. In Leila Jsefwicz, fr whm I wrte this piece, there is n ne better t embdy the fire and passin that my latter-day Scheherazade shuld radiate.
