Grade: 3-6 (This lessn has been successfully adapted fr high schl students by experienced music teachers. Nn-music teachers are recmmended t use the lessn with the indicated grades) Objectives: 1. Students will learn abut decmpsitin f trash 2. Students will learn which materials are recyclable in Mntana and hw this can be dne. (This culd be easily adapted fr ther regins as well.) 3. Students will reduce the amunt f trash they thrw away. 4. Students will learn cllabrative ways t create music. 5. Students will learn t keep a steady beat while playing varius rhythms. Mntana Standards and Benchmarks: Grades K-4 Scial Studies 3.3 Describe and illustrate ways in which peple interact with their physical envirnment. Arts 1.1. Students use a variety f materials and surces t experiment with an art frm Students present their wn wrk and wrks f thers Students cllabrate with thers in the creative prcess Students explre slutins t a given prblem thrugh the arts. Preparatin: Befre students arrive prepare a timeline n the flr f the classrm space using the laminated cards prvided. Intrductin: Welcme students t the statin and explain that yu will be talking abut what happens t things that we thrw away. Ask if any f the students remember what decmpsitin means. Discuss hw decmpsitin is the prcess f breaking dwn int a natural state- turning int dirt. Ask if students knw any ther wrds fr this prcess (rtting, bidegrading). Three things are required fr decmpsitin t happen: air, water and sunlight. With these three elements, mst bjects will eventually decmpse. But hw lng des this take? Activity: Give each student ne piece f trash and explain that they are ging t frm a timeline. Have students line up n the timeline at the number f years they think it will take fr their bject t decmpse. Ask each student t share hw lng they think their item will take t decmpse. Next, read ff hw lng each item actually takes t decmpse. Have students rearrange as necessary. After students take a seat, ask them fr their reactins t this activity. Ask if they think that bjects receive the air, water and sunlight that they need t decmpse when they are in **Glass is listed as never decmpsing. Glass is primarily made f silica, which is basically sand. Because f this, grund glass is basically decmpsed r returned t its riginal state. Hwever, dyes and ther chemicals are added t glass. Als, if it is thrwn in a landfill, glass will cntinue t take up space frever.** See MUD s Talking Trash Curriculum fr mre recycling and trash activities.

3 Missula Urban Demnstratin Prject 629 Phillips Street, Missula, MT Office: Tl Library: Recycled Rhythms Materials: Recycled Rhythms mat (laminated with Velcr t attach t cards) Recycled Rhythms Picture r Nte Cards, (laminated with Velcr t attach t mat) Cardbard Squares w/ Velcr t attach cards. 24 jars (pitched with water t create 3 majr r minr scales.) Enugh recycled items s that each student has an instrument. Suggestins include: 5 galln buckets, windw shutters, dwels, cans with washers r ther rattling bjects, heater vent cvers, pts and pans, etc. Preparatin: Befre students arrive, fill jars with water s that desired pitch is prduced when struck. MUD lends ut a trunk with 24 jars (8 pitches per scale x 3 sets) that are already pitched. This cmbinatin allws fr C majr r C minr scales. Gather ther recycled items that make sunds. MUD s Recycled Rhythms trunk has a set f items that are ready t use. Befre class starts, put a variety f Recycled Rhythm cards n each cardbard square. Each grup f 3-5 students will need ne cardbard square. Each square shuld cntain several f each type f rhythm card. Teachers can chse between picture cards and cards with music ntatin depending n hw much the yuth knw abut reading music. Intrductin: After cmpleting the decmpsitin timeline, ask students which items n the timeline can be recycled. The fllwing items can be recycled in Missula, MT. (This list may vary depending n lcatin. Check with yur lcal recycling center fr an accurate list fr yur cmmunity.) Paper Newspaper Tin Aluminum #1 Plastic #2 Plastic Crrugated Cardbard Write each recyclable item n the bard. Fr each item named that can t be recycled, emphasize hw lng that item sits in the landfill and, if pssible, discuss why the item can t be recycled (this usually has t d with the lcatin f prcessing plants, and the market fr the recycled items.) Explain that each wrd can be used as a rhythm. Give an example f ne wrd-rhythm (cr-rugated card - bard). Ask students t create wrd-rhythms fr the ther wrds n the list. Explain that they will be creating cmpsitins using wrd-rhythms. G thrugh each wrd and make sure that all students are using the same rhythm fr each wrd.

4 Missula Urban Demnstratin Prject 629 Phillips Street, Missula, MT Office: Tl Library: Break students up int grups f 3-5. Give each grup a Recycled Rhythms Mat and a set f Recycled Rhythms cards. Instruct the students t create a cmpsitin by arranging the different rhythms n their mat, filling all f the spaces prvided. Instruct each grup t assign a bdy percussin mvement fr each unique rhythm. A bdy percussin rhythm is a mvement that creates sund using different bdy parts. Clapping, snapping fingers, stmping feet, drumming n the belly, etc can be cmbined t create different rhythms. Encurage students t be as creative as they can when creating their bdy percussin. Have each grup perfrm their bdy percussin fr their classmates. During this sectin, students shuld say the wrds while perfrming their bdy percussin, unless this interferes with their creative idea fr their cmpsitin. Once each grup has perfrmed, instruct them t select recycled instruments t perfrm their cmpsitins. Rhythms will ideally be played withut saying the wrds they are derived frm. When grups are ready have them put their instruments dwn. Tell them that they will cmbine all f their cmpsitins t make a grup cmpsitin. Teach them the fllwing rhyme: We RECYCLE what we use, Separate things and yu shuld t! Cardbard, paper, plastic, tin, G in yur RECYCLING BIN! **Make sure yu chse a slw temp fr the rhyme because the students will need t play their cmpsitins at the same speed that the rhyme is repeated.** Have the students select ne r tw rhythms that will be the stinatti, r repeated rhythms that will be played in between grup cmpsitins and while saying the pem. Fr example, ne student (r grup f students) culd play the cr-ru-ga-ted card - bard rhythm ver and ver again. Simultaneusly, anther student (r grup f students) culd play tin - a-lu-mi-num ver and ver again. It helps t have them practice the rhythms separately first, then practice them tgether. Indicate which rder the grups will play in, s that they feel prepared t participate. The sng will be structured in the fllwing manner: Ostinatti #1 enters. Plays alne fr 8 beats (each square is 1 beat) Ostinatti #2 enters. The tw play tgether fr 8 beats Students say pem in unisn (16 beats) Ostinatti play fr 8 beats by themselves Grup #1 plays their cmpsitin (stinatti are silent) 8 beats Ostinatti play fr 8 beats by themselves} Grup #2 plays their cmpsitin (stinatti are silent) 8 beats Ostinatti play fr 8 beats by themselves Repeat until all grups have perfrmed Ostinatti play 8 beats by themselves Students say pem in unisn (16 beats) Ostinatti fade ut slwly until silent

Give them lts f eye cntact during the 8 beats befre their entrance, and give them clear beats befrehand, giving them a big signal when it is time t cme in. N cnducting skills are needed, but they may need help with the entrance. Optinal additins: Give students the pprtunity t imprvise freely after saying the pem the secnd time. Then indicate the decrescend (slw fade) t the end. See hw quiet they can get befre being entirely silent. This basic lessn can be expanded upn in many ways. Teachers that are familiar with music educatin may want t include the pitched jars in the lessn. Simple sngs can be played using the jars, and students can either create their wn meldies r can read meldies that are already written ut. Jars can be labeled with nte names (A,B,C, etc.) r with slfeggi (d, re, mi, etc.). Als, advanced grups can write multiple rhythms t be played simultaneusly
