For your convenience, the book drop is open when the library is closed. Michigan Activity Pass Michigan Activity Pass celebrated its 10th anniversary on May 24, 2017 by adding 15 new destinations to the more than 400 destinations already offered. Michigan library patrons may enjoy entry into many of Michigan s state parks, historic sites, forest campgrounds, recreation parks and cultural attractions with this year round program.the passes give patrons free, or discounted, admission to the venues listed on the Michigan Activity Pass site. There will be five passes available per cultural attraction, per library each week. A one-day free pass will allow entry into participating state parks or recreation areas. To check out a pass go to rockets.com/map2016/ or to the library s website at and click on the hot air balloon link on the right hand side of the page. Patrons may check out one MAP pass per library card every 7 days. When you print out a MAP pass, you have 7 days from the date it was reserved to use it. Photocopies of MAP passes will not be accepted at MAP destinations. Only passes printed from the MAP website can be redeemed at MAP destinations. Prior to your visit, please call ahead or check the venue s website in order to verify hours of operation, etc. LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES IN ST. CLAIR SHORES The St. Clair Shores Public Library previously announced plans to install Little Free Libraries in a handful of city parks to offer reading opportunities to those in the community who might want a lastminute reading option while going out on a boat, taking a family member to a sporting event, or just relaxing in the park. The St. Clair Shores Cool City Committee has already purchased three Little Free Libraries, and individuals have turned in two more. If you are interested in building one of these, there are still spots to sponsor one. Please contact the Library or Friends of the Library for more information. Zinio is now RBdigital Zinio, our online magazine site, will get a makeover starting June 27. Patrons who have been using Zinio will be prompted to update their app by clicking on a link that will take them to the RBdigital app. Once the new app is installed, all previous login and account information will stay the same. With the new RBdigital app and website, you will no longer log in to two different sites to browse magazines, checkout magazines, and then read the magazine. You will be able to do every step of RBdigital through one website or app installed on your device. This streamlined version will have all the features you enjoyed in Zinio, contained in one location. Fliers with instructions will be available at the adult information desk. 2 Libr ary News Movies at the Libr ary CINEMA THURSDAY 6:30 PM on the first Thursday of each month July 6 August 3 Before I Fall Ghost in the Shell Sanborn Maps Online On May 25, the Library of Congress issued a press release with the information that nearly 25,000 Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps have been placed online. These maps show buildings and their use in cities and towns in the United States. Adult Coloring Program The St. Clair Shores Public Library will be hosting a free adult coloring program on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 and Wednesday, August 9, 2017 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. This drop in program will take place in the Reading Lounge at the St. Clair Shores Public Library. All materials will be provided but feel free to bring your own supplies. For details and information, please contact the library at or check the library s website. Maps for 33 states (including Michigan) are now online. More maps will be added each month until 2020, for a total of about 500,000 maps. The maps currently online were published prior to Eventually, the dates of the maps will range from the late 1880s through the early 1960s. According to the Library of Congress, The Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps are a valuable resource for genealogists, historians, urban planners, teachers or anyone with a personal connection to a community, street or building. The maps depict more than 12,000 American towns and cities. They show the size, shape and construction materials of dwellings, commercial buildings, factories and other structures. They indicate both the names and width of streets, and show property boundaries and how individual buildings were used. House and block numbers are identified. In the 19th century, specialized maps were originally prepared for the exclusive use of fire insurance companies and underwriters. Those companies needed accurate, current and detailed information about the properties they were insuring. The Sanborn Map Company was created around 1866 in the United States in response to this need and began publishing and registering maps for copyright. The Library of Congress acquired the maps through copyright deposit, and the collection grew to 700,000 individual sheets. The insurance industry eventually phased out use of the maps and Sanborn stopped producing updates in the late 1970s. 3 Libr ary News Build A Better World There is still time to join us this summer as we Build A Better World. Read adult library books, or five books to a child, to win a chance to win gift cards that have been generously donated by the Friends of the St. Clair Shores Public Library. The program will run June 6 through July 31 during the eight weeks of the Youth Services Summer Reading Program. Drawing tickets and registration forms are located near the Adult Information Desk. Films in the Stacks Local film buffs can find treasure among our shelves. Did you know that in addition to our Feature Film collection, located across from the library s circulation desk, we also have many movies, television shows, and documentaries shelved alongside our books in the stacks? You can find terrific classic, popular, and foreign films as well as musicals in our 700s section, the area dedicated to Arts and Recreation. Our exceptional selection of documentaries can be found, organized by subject, among the books. We carry films and investigative reports about current events, art, science, wildlife, history and much more. These films are FREE and available to checkout for one week. Ask a librarian for assistance in finding them, or take a walk among our stacks and browse this wide-ranging collection. Here are just a few of the films we've recently acquired: Oscar nominated documentaries Fire at Sea; Life, Animated; and OJ: Made in America Popular PBS shows Call the Midwife, Father Brown, Great British Baking Show, and Victorian Slum House Documentaries from the PBS Frontline Series: Chasing Heroin, Children of Syria, and Policing the Police American Sign Language Vocabulary Builder, Volumes 1 & 2 Sound City (Music Documentary featuring Dave Grohl, Tom Petty, Mick Fleetwood and more) A Sloth Named Velcro (Nature Documentary) Don't Blink (Biography of Famous Photographer Robert Frank) Dance Class at the Library! The St. Clair Shores Cultural Committee and Library are joining together with Rhythm N Jump Dance Academy for a free introductory dance class for kids on Monday, July 31! The Academy's owner, Suzette D'Andrea, will teach a jazz-hip hop dance routine for kids to then perform! There is a 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM class for children 5 to 8 years old. A 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM class is slated for children 9 to 12 years old. Space is limited and registration begins on Monday, July 10. Registration may be made in person or by calling the library at We hope to see you there! Art/Pride Lecture by Detroit Institute of Arts at the Library Ready for another Behind the Seen Talk? The newest free lecture from a Detroit Institute of Arts Speakers Bureau Guide is called ART/PRIDE and raises awareness of the significant contributions by LGBT artists and their impact in the art world. These artists are among leaders of modern and contemporary art and have shattered stereotypes and defied prejudice and discrimination on their paths to success. The lecture takes place Monday, July 24 at 7:00 PM in the library s meeting room and is sponsored by the St. Clair Shores Cultural Committee. Please join us! Thank You from Gleaners Community Food Bank A big thank you to all the patrons who donated food for Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeast Michigan's 2017 Food for Thought Campaign. This year, participating Macomb County libraries donated 13,875 pounds of food to be distributed among 500 soup kitchens, shelters, and pantries. That's 11,606 meals for those in need! Great job!

4 FRIENDS FRIENDS OF the St. Clair Shores PubLIC LIBRARY BOARD During our annual meeting on May 16, the following members were elected to the Friends Board of Directors: President Mary Lou Britton Vice President Candie Jagenow Secretary Jan Drewek Treasurer Ann Powell Directors - Peggy Chamberlain, Janet Horan, Eleanore Martens, Norma Maxvill, Patricia Stelma, Judy Wendler Our speaker was M. L. Liebler, a St. Clair Shores native who is an internationally known and widely published poet. If you didn t attend, you missed a wonderful evening of music, singing, laughter, and yes, poetry. You ve seen his photo many times in the pages of this newsletter because he offers a free poetry workshop at the library. If you re interested in cultivating your creative writing, you might want to attend one of these! JOIN THE FRIENDS BOARD The Friends of St. Clair Shores Public Library meets at 1:00 PM on the fourth Tuesday of each month (note time change from 6:00 PM). We welcome visitors and all members, and our agenda includes an opportunity for you to comment. We also have room for additional directors, so if you are interested, come to the next meeting! We are a volunteer organization which supports the operations of the library, sponsors library programs, and raises funds to meet special library needs. Please join us! AMAZON SMILE AND KROGER REWARDS We have already received a donation from Amazon because of our participation in the AmazonSmile program, announced in the May/June issue. You KNOW our first thought was Book Store! All of our plans and hard work have finally come to fruition, and the Friends Used Book Store is open for business daily during library hours. We have a selection of all the categories you find at our Spring and Fall Semi-Annual Sales, as well as the Last Chance books, paperbacks, and magazines that were previously located at the front entrance of the library. The selection of all categories will be rotated frequently, and prices are clearly posted. Can t wait to see you there!! Never let it be said that inclement weather (four days of constant rain) will keep SCS book lovers from the library and the Friends book sales. The Spring book sale was very successful because of you, and more than $3,200 was raised for library programs. Now, join us for the annual Summer Bargain Book Sale on Tuesday, July 11, from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Hardcover and softcover fiction for $1. Celebrate Christmas in July with a selection of Christmas craft, decorating, and cook books to get a head-start on your holiday planning. DONATION OF CHILDRENS BOOKS The children of St. Clair Shores are readers! And we ve been hard-pressed to keep up with demand for children s books. If you re finished with your current supply, please consider cleaning your shelves and donating them to us so we can keep our youngest readers happy. Thank you!

5 YOUTH SERVICES FOR TOTS 1 st Stop and Tot Time continue throughout the summer each Wednesday and Thursday morning beginning at 10:00 AM. Your wee ones will enjoy the songs, nursery rhymes, stories, and bubbles of 1 st Stop before we bring out the toys at 10:30 AM for Tot Time. These free programs are for children from birth through age four. There will be no 1 st Stop Wednesday, July 5. Tot Time will begin at 10:00 AM that day. ANYTHING GOES CRAFT Challenge your creativity, stretch your imagination, and surprise yourself by stopping in for a big brown bag of mystery craft items at this fun make and take event on Tuesday, August 22 from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. ALL DAY LEGO BLOCK PARTY Do you love Legos and building? Come show off your skills at the all day LEGO Block Party on Tuesday, August 8. We ll provide the LEGOS; you bring your creativity and show us what you can do! We will have a few fun challenges, too! Children of all ages are invited to participate between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM. No registration is required for this event. PAWS FOR READING Reading is even more fun when you read with a dog! To help you keep up your reading skills, Paws For Reading will continue on Thursdays from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM through Thursday, August 24. You can read to one of our friendly therapy dogs; they love to meet kids and be read to. Come and make their day and meet a new friend! ESCAPE! Do you have what it takes to solve puzzles, uncover clues, and work with a team to escape from a locked room? Visit the library on Monday, July 17 at 6:30 PM to find out! Come and enjoy a fun, interactive, live escape room program. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Don t forget to register beginning Monday, July 3. Woodford LOCAL HISTORY CENTER HOURS of Operation Tuesday 1:00 to 4:00 PM Thursday 5:00 to 8:30 PM Friday July 14 & 28 & August 11 & 25 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 to 4:00 PM GENEALOGY NEWS The St. Clair Shores Genealogy Group meets the fourth Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM, January through June, September and October. All meetings are held in the Arthur M. Woodford Local History Center unless otherwise noted in the newsletter and on the library website. All programs are free and open to the public. Beginning genealogists are always welcome. Please visit the library website for information on upcoming meetings. Books in the Local History Center We have books on a huge range of topics, all related to Michigan or the surrounding region (including Canada). We have books on how to do genealogy and how to research records of a variety of ethnic groups. We have military records, including reproductions of some original records. We have state and national census records, and volumes on the descendants from the Mayflower. We even have books that list names from Macomb County cemeteries. If you are interested in older cookbooks, animals, plants, trees, birds or butterflies of Michigan, we have a book for you. If the history of school systems, banking, medicine or local universities is something you want to read about, we have a book for you. If sports are more to your liking, we have books about Michigan teams, both professional and college. We also have books on Native Americans in Michigan, from their language to their culture to their crafts, and of course, their boats. If you like anything related to ships or water, we have something for you. There are ecology studies of the Great Lakes, books on shipwrecks, lighthouses and their keepers (men and women), plus books on boating, and fish and fishing. For lovers of railroads or electric trains, we have books on that too. There are histories of local towns and histories of most counties in Michigan, Upper and Lower Peninsula. There are books about well known buildings and places (like churches and Motown Records). There are books on haunted places in Michigan and lots of books on car companies and their founders (from Henry Ford to John DeLorean and more). There are books on slavery, politics, labor, lumber, music, mining, and governors of Michigan. Finally, there is fiction written by Michigan authors, poetry by Michigan poets, and essays from Michigan writers, including favorite newspaper columnists from days gone by. And of course, we have biographies on people from Michigan and those who made Michigan history. Please come by and explore what we have to offer. None of our items circulate, but you re welcome to come in, pull a book off the shelf, find a chair, and read for a while.

7 Historical News Fall Maison Lecture Series The Elizabeth Blay Maison Memorial Lecture Series on Local History and Genealogy will return this fall at the Library. All programs will begin at 7:00 PM, and are free and open to the public. Terror in the City of Champions September 18 Tom Stanton will discuss his book, a New York Times sports best seller. This true story of murder, baseball and the Black Legion secret society in Depression-era Detroit is a 2017 Michigan Notable Book. Roots of the Music: Origins of the Motown Sound October 11 The Motown Sound had its roots in music from Detroit and around the nation before Motown Records was founded in This presentation delves into the city s history of music making, and the elements that contributed to the unique stylings of Motown and Tamla Records. Catholic Education in Detroit: An Evolving Mission November 8 At the beginning of the twentieth century, Detroit's Catholics dedicated themselves to the establishment of a school system that provided an alternative to public schools. This system continued throughout the twentieth century. However, its mission shifted continuously to meet the changing demands of Detroit's population. This presentation by Dr. Karen Miller, Oakland University, will examine that evolution. Museum Open House Hours The museum will be open on Wednesdays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. These hours are in effect until after Labor Day. Can t make it on Wednesdays? You can always schedule a free special tour or rent the museum for a small group. Call (586) for more information. When you visit you will learn about daily life in rural St. Clair Shores in the late 19th century and the early 20th century; how a farmhouse would have been furnished, the daily chores, popular pastimes, and more. You will also learn why the farmhouse is architecturally significant. Visiting the Selinsky-Green Farmhouse is a great way to gain some insight into what daily life was like for your ancestors. Sweet Mountain Strings at the Library Local mountain dulcimer group, Sweet Mountain Strings, will be sharing their mountain music and sweet harmonies at the library this summer. The group will play inside the library s Reading Lounge Tuesdays July 11, 18, 25 and August 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The group will play folk and Americana music with mountain dulcimers and other folk instruments. These soothing performances are free and open to the public. Folk Music by Jim Daniska Folk musician Jim Daniska will be playing in the backyard of the Selinsky-Green Farmhouse Museum on Thursdays July 6 & 20; August 3 & 17 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, weather permitting. He will be playing covers ranging from Pete Seeger to Woody Guthrie to Bob Dylan. Daniska asks you to come prepared to join in singing some of your old favorites and maybe even some new ones. There is no charge to attend; please bring your own lawn chairs. Yardeners 24th Annual Garden Tour On Saturday, August 5, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, you will view some of the loveliest yards in St. Clair Shores and get gardening ideas for your gardens from the homeowners. Yardeners and Master Gardeners will also be available to answer questions. Take a few moments to tour the Museum and gardens, and visit the Yardeners' vendors. Registration starts at 9:00 AM at the Selinsky- Green Farmhouse Museum. The cost is $5.00 for adults, children under 12 are free.
