After 23 years of dancing at the Ogden Memorial Church in Chatham, we have moved to a new home at the First Presbyterian Church of East Hanover. Our inaugural dance will be on June 6th. Escalating costs led us to search for a venue that would allow us to maintain the quality of performers and site while preserving our current admission fee. We are sad to have left our familiar home at Ogden but excited by the advantages of the new space. The Parish House of First Church has wonderful and larger wooden dance floor which is flanked on each side by large windows allowing for great ventilation. There is plenty of parking in the adjoining lot. We are fortunate to keep things in the family since Folk Project member Margaret Crowl is the current pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Come celebrate our new First Church home on June 6th. Our first dance in the new nest will be called by Folk Project and Swingin Tern family member Bob Isaacs. Lost on the Turnpike will provide the driving music, the band includes Project members Chris Carpenter and Eve Rantzer. Don t let the band name mislead you, the new hall is easy to get to it s just off of Route 10. Full directions are on the web at dance.folkproject.org. Our dances will continue to be held on the first and third Saturday of each month year round. Come home to our new nest at the First Presbyterian Church of East Hanover! 2 The Minstrel June, 2009 Acoustic Concert Series presented by Fri., June 5: John Flynn and Jeremy Wallace JOHN FLYNN was just too good a songwriter for Nashville. In the early 90's he left his comfortable staff songwriter position at a major Music Row publishing house to pursue the music that simply didn't fit the commercial strictures of the Country Music world. The result was a stream of brilliant songs, brilliantly delivered, touching all aspects, personal and social, of contemporary life. The songs of tonight s opener JEREMY WALLACE fit his image: the street-wise hardboiled tough-yet-tender guy who's seen it all, done it all, and written the song about it. He and his small combo deliver these bluesy ballads in a laid-back gravelly-voiced style reminiscent of Leon Redbone or Tom Waits. Fri., June 12: Open Stage The Minstrel provides this service to our local musical community and passing traveling professionals to be heard by the public and maybe to be booked for a future show. Those who wish to perform at the OPEN STAGE should visit Those who wish to see and hear a wide variety of performers should attend. Fri., June 19: The Folk Brothers and Ember THE FOLK BROTHERS are David Massengill and Jack Hardy, two of the pivotal characters of the heyday of the Greenwich Village Folk scene. Individually, they have written songs recorded by Joan Baez, Dave Van Ronk, The Roches, and Lucy Kaplansky, and they have mentored hundreds of songwriters who came up through that seminal time and place. Together, they support each other with harmonies and instrumental backup. They spin tales of the people and music of that golden era, even as they continue to write and add to its legacy, as well as paying musical homage to the roots from which that legacy sprang. From Wales in the UK comes our opening act, EMBER, the duo of Rebecca Sullivan and Emily Williams. They feature outstanding harmony singing and accompaniment on guitar, fiddle, and clarinet. They sing mostly their own songs with occasional detours into the realm of traditional songs and tunes. Fri., June 26: Hickory Tree Chorus and Bill Griese The HICKORY TREE CHORUS is a 50+ member award-winning women's acapella choir based in Somerset County, NJ. Their staple is the "Sweet Adelines" (female version of Barbershop) 4-part harmony repertoire. But they apply that style to other genres of music from 30 s jazz standards to Broadway to Beatles to novelty songs, all presented with a theatrical sensibility, choreography, and of course great harmonies. Folk Projectile Wendy Keilin is among the members of the group. Our opening act is BILL GRIESE. A singer/songwriter with a traditional folk-rock approach, Bill delivers warm, smooth vocals and a relaxed pick-less guitar style, playing introspective original material or refreshingly unexpected covers. A real charmer. UPCOMING: 7/3: Guitarist, wordsmith, funny man, and the Minstrel s Program Chairman, MIKE AGRANOFF; 7/17: Legendary jazz guitarist BUCKY PIZZARELLI; 7/24: The Minstrel s BIRTHDAY SHOW; 8/31: Blues guitarist extraordinaire TOBY WALKER; 8/28: PAT WIC- TOR and JON SHAIN singer-songwriter split bill; 9/18: Dynamic folk-rockers THE KENNEDYS; 9/25: Songwriter TRACY GRAMMER The Minstrel is an acoustic music concert series run by the Folk Project, a non-profit folk music and arts organization. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $7.00 on your way in, and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Children under 12 are free. (I m a baby boomer and blaming parents is one of my inalienable rights.) They loved playing host and so do I. When I m MC ing at the Minstrel, welcoming people at the door, or setting up the coffee, it feels a little like I m carrying out the turkey on Thanksgiving or like I m inviting people over for a good time. I also volunteer because I like moving around. Some people may want to sit back and enjoy the music, but I sit for my day job. I find motion relaxing and I m not always comfortable watching my friends volunteer while I m just hanging out. I spent the better part of decades showing up early on Friday nights for the rhythmic pleasure of setting up chairs at 7:30 and taking them down at 11:00. I enjoy pitching in, and I enjoy the company of active people who enjoy pitching in. Go ahead. Push me and I ll admit to the guilty pleasure of getting two free concerts, one the night I volunteer and one the night I get in with the free volunteer pass. But mostly I like the feeling that I own a piece of the Minstrel. If I owned my own bar I wouldn t pay to get in, and that s what I imagine when I walk into the coffeehouse and tell the door person tonight s my freebie. Call me nuts, but volunteering makes me feel like it s my joint. Last on today s list of reasons why is the give-back. I ve seen a lot of spectacular concerts, learned loads about music, met a bunch of great friends, been given so many chances to perform, and found all kinds of fun and inspiration hanging out with you guys. I m not the only one. A lot of us have found a lot of glorious music, happy times and special relationships through the Folk Project. I volunteer because I like seeing other people get a piece of what I ve gotten over all these years. Next time you attend one of our shows or dances, ask about how you can pitch in. 6 Mark your calendar... You don t want to miss this weekend! After a successful first Spring Festival at Star Lake, the Folk Project Fall Festival returns to Columbus Day weekend October 9 11 with a constellation of star performers, including the fast-rising Red Molly, the established luminary Vance Gilbert, the legendary Walt Michael, as well as our own Martin Swinger, Illegal Contraband, Dave Kleiner and Liz Pagan and Ken and Pat Rolston. Red Molly (Laurie MacAllister, Abbie Gardner, Carolann Solebello) formed around a campfire in 2004 at Falcon Ridge. Combining stunning harmonies, multi-instrumental versatility, and a warm, engaging stage presence, they have packed The Minstrel and become audience favorites. Vance Gilbert burst onto the Boston folk scene in the early 90 s. With nine albums to his credit, and a host or rave reviews from across the country, he brings humor, a virtuosic tenor voice, and an accomplished guitar style to every performance. Walt Michael is a master of the hammered dulcimer, a vocalist, and a multi-instrumentalist. In his 37 years of performance, he has performed from Lincoln Center to the 13th Winter Olympics to Broadway and beyond. He comes to us from McDaniel College, in Maryland, where he is artist-in-residence. Martin Swinger has delighted FP audiences with his bright, upbeat and witty songs. A veteran of the Kerrville and Boston Folk Festival, and a member of the quintet ImproVox, he performs over 100 times a year. Dave Kleiner is the Folk Project s resident guitar guru and twisted mind. He performs his origianl songs and some covers with Festival Food Maven and wife Liz Pagan. Illegal Contraband, led by FP stalwarts A.J. Bodnar and Liza DiSavino, recently wowed both The Minstrel and Swingin Tern audiences with both concert and dance sets. They will light up the festival concert stage, and keep the dancers moving with a full spectrum of covers, traditional, and original material. FP stalwarts Ken and Pat Rolston are organizing and will lead a volunteer Small Chorus. The chorus will prepare during Festival and perform a Sunday afternoon concert set. And we will spotlight the FP s next generation with a 25 and under Open Stage on Saturday. Start polishing your best material! Dave Sherman will be in charge. shermnotes@aol.com for info. The Fall Festival is still a work in progress. For updates, go to festival.folkproject.org and click the festival list link. Other Festivals Not Quite As Good As Ours... 6 Who is Pelvis Burlapp? Many of you are new to the Folk Project, and may not know the history and qualifications of Pelvis Burlapp, our resident expert. Pelvis is on hiatus, working on his fiftieth degree, which will make him a certified forensic investigator of pie. (CFI of P). This month s column will clarify and illuminate the importance and sheer brilliance of our own Pelvis. Pelvis Burlapp, of the Piscataway Burlapps, was born in a time before computers and hygiene. He had a relentless curiosity about all things, and was a quick and adept student. Graduating from Morris Less Junior Academy for Precocious Chaps at the age of six, he quickly began his college career, graduating from Maury Schlitz University of Shoe Care before he was eight, with a major in upper bootstraps, and a minor in sole searching. Since he was too young to be gainfully employed, he continued to study various and diverse fields, from Recreational Freelance Snorting, to Biodiversity Among Twins. Because he was so brilliant, classmates began coming to Pelvis for advice on all things confusing, and Pelvis discovered he not only knew a lot about everything, but could solve personal problems as well. He started an advice column in his college newspaper, The Bergen School of Taxidermy s Daily Stuff. The column was an immediate hit, and was syndicated in over 200 college newspapers throughout Bergen County. While traveling in Europe, Pelvis met a dashing young coed who caught his eye while she was casting in the Pho River. As he removed the Eagle Claw 139 from his eye socket, he was taken by the sweet fisherwoman s smile and breasts. Helvetica Fontsize saw in Pelvis everything her parents had warned her to avoid, and within the year, they were wed. They remain happily betrothed to this day. Pelvis s many accomplishments include: defining the word plotz, solving the formerly unsolveable The Coroner s Conundrum, inventing a reuseable bubble gum, and growing prizewinning rachis palms. He is also a folk music expert, and has assembled the world s finest collection of pre-revolutionary War Martins. Acceptance of the minutes: the minutes of April were accepted with minor editorial corrections. Treasurer s Report: Eddie reports that our bank balance is good after most of the Spring Festival bills were paid. The Form 990 (Non-profit tax forms) are being taken care of. Things got significantly more complicated when we passed the $100,000 threshold; so getting a paid accountant to do this has been a good idea. There was a short discussion over how to handle ( capitalize or depreciate ) upcoming equipment expenses. NEW BUSINESS: Borderline: Mark reports that the decided on last month has been written and sent. ACMA Grant: Pam reports that that the ACMA grant for 2009 was actually a two-year grant, so we don t need to re-apply this year! Fellowships Committee: Scooter reports that the Committee has been formed and will consist of himself, Jim West, and Lois DeRitter. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Festival: There was a round of applause for Lori, who reported that Spring Festival at Star Lake was a great success. When asked how she did it, Lori replied that she talked to as many people as possible, asking them what was keeping them away from Festival. She also looked hard at the finances, and instituted a general policy of no sacred cows everything is open for discussion and change. StoryTelling: Rivka reported (via phone call) that the call for tellers and call for workshop proposals has gone out for the 2009 Storytelling Festival (which will be held on Oct 18, 2009). Newsletter: Carl reports that the May NL was a bit late getting out, but it arrived in people s mailboxes before May 1, so it s all good. Publicity: George reports that he has been exchanging information with Mark and Joe, getting ready for the handoff of responsibilities. He noted that Joe will have a chance to redesign the process to take advantage of newer technologies and improve the workflow. Mark added a big Thanks! to George for his long service and hard work. There was general agreement. Merchandise: Margaret reports (via ) that the new T- shirts were available at Festival. We still have shirts left in every size and configuration except for medium long-sleeve. She s looking into mugs as our new item for fall. George said he could scan and help recreate the artwork of the old mug. Bobbie provided a sample for George to work on. Margaret s also thinking about a Folk Project Cook Book. It would be fun project and we might also get some of our favorite performers to participate. Finance: Andy reports that Things are less bad now than they have been recently. Sound: Bob reports that the move for Swingin Tern is progressing; we survived our first Festival at Star Lake; and all mike stands at Minstrel have been refurbished. Minstrel: Mike reports that the Wiyos show was a sellout, and the computer project for front desk is progressing apace. Minstrel Staffing: Sandie reports that she has 5 new volunteers. HSNOI: Ralph and Sandie report that they have purchased a Sony stand-alone system that can duplicate up to 3 DVDs from one original in about 8 minutes, enabling Ralph to send DVDs to stations that can t handle VHS tape anymore. They taped four high-spirited shows in April: Marc Ribler, Danielle Miraglia, Rich LaPierre, and Xylopholks. In response to a question about producing a Best of HSNOI DVD, Sandie pointed out that work like that is a very long and painstaking process, so if anybody wants to take it on, please contact her or Ralph. S n T: Connie (via ) reports that they have a signed agreement with First Hanover Church of East Hanover to relocate the dance there starting in June. They will also do a major campaign to win new dancers, including free passes to the church congregation and the Jazzercise classes that meet in the church during the week. Special Concerts: Pam reports that The Vocal Workshop with Siobhan Quinn on April 11 was a success and resulted in a small profit. The Accompaniment workshop with Andy Goessling next Saturday is shaping up. Tickets for the November 7th John McCutcheon concert are now on Sale. Good of the Order is reported elsewhere in this newsletter. Talk to Eddie if you ve had or know about someone who s had a significant event in their lives recently. Adjournment: 9:52pm. The next meeting will be on June 2 at Connie Crawford s house in Berkeley Heights. GOOD OF THE ORDER/COMMUNITY NEWS This is a place to share news about memorable events and challenges you have faced in the past month with your Folk Project Community. Please send items to Eddie Roffman, eroffman@optonline.net. Sandie Reilly began her mountain bike racing season for This year, she moved up to a more difficult class, from beginner to sport. She is proud to say that she finished her first race. Bobbie Rosengarten had a great time hosting last month s workshop and the FP Evening of Music. Jim King is performing in a charity concert at the Stanton Community Church. He will be reading a Civil War letter that was written by a Union Major, just before the battle of Bull Run. His reading will be accompanied by a fiddle rendition of Ashokan Farewell. After 10 months of emotional preparation, sorting and cleaning, Lori Falco and her sisters have finally listed their parent s house for sale. Catherine Pidcock (Cathy) Thomas was on TV again, for a good reason this time. A book collector had come across a 150 year-old bible that had belonged to Cathy s great-great grand uncle, Anderson Pidcock, who was killed in action in the Civil War. The collector researched and discovered Cathy as a descendant, and offered to return the book to the Pidcock family. The return of the bible was covered on local and national news! Brad Pryor enjoyed playing an open stage with Nancy Haslam and Mark Schaffer. Brad recently saw Robin and Linda Williams in concert and recommends them for future Folk Project entertainment. Brad also reports that he has been taking guitar lessons from Kathy Moser. Lois DeRitter and Margaret Crowl went to the Peter Seeger 90th birthday concert at Madison Square Garden. They said it was amazing and exciting. Tom Chapin sang the song Garbage with Oscar the Grouch and mentioned Bill Steele and Mike Agranoff as the authors. Lois also noted that one of the advantages of having the FP festival in April was that she got to celebrate Mother s Day with her daughter. Andy Koenig reports that he is co-authoring a submission for an upcoming psychology conference with his sister. Watch and listen for more details. Robin and Eddie Roffman have taken a short-term sublet of an apartment in New York City for the month of May. They ve been attending performances at Lincoln center, seeing Broadway and off-broadway shows, and visiting museums. They recently saw the entire Wagner Ring Cycle, Hair, and Waiting for Godot. Elizabeth Lachowicz thanks everybody for supporting Betsy Rose and the Chicago Fire. Scott and Leslie Ross have a wonderful bouncing baby boy. William Riley Ross, weighing in at 8lbs 2oz, was born at 4:54 PM on March 29. Summer Weekend August The Folk Project s own eccentric weekend-long jam at a converted barn near Pine Brook, NY. Tent or floor sleeping available, food and chores shared by all. Space is limited but day trippers are welcome. Contact Harmonica Bob, bobrosensweet@optonline.net 12 13
