1 September org New Jersey s Premier Acoustic Music and Dance Organization Fall Festival Preview Participating in this fall s lineup will be Patty Larkin, Beppe Gambetta, Bing Futch, Jean Rohe, Ilusha Tsinadze, Naomi Sunshine, Mike Agranoff, Olga & Gerry and you. That makes for a wonderful weekend, because it includes you. Here s the secret mission statement behind every festival: We re a weekend community centered on entertainment, education and self-expression. The Project does a lot of work behind the scenes to make that mission come true. Community: You ll meet old and new old friends, some artists you love, some Minstrel fans you ve seen in the audience, some festival fans you ve never seen before. We ll make sure you have a great time, have lots of activities, and enjoy yourselves and each other. Entertainment: You ll hear some great concerts. A lot of the workshops are fun and educational. Some are mesmerizing. Some workshops are mini-concerts and showcases. You will be in music heaven for three days. Education: We want every fest friend to pick up some knowledge, something meaningful, some skill, some joyful experience, something that they value forever. Whether you re a musician or a listener, we work hard so that you ll take something away from this weekend that will last forever. Self-expression: We revel in participation for beginning, professional and NOT musicians. You ll find it in our workshops, song circles and jam sessions, and even on our concert stage. Believe it or not, you ll even have a chance to open for Patty Larkin and Jean & Ilusha at our big Saturday concert. Plus you can contribute to in all sorts of workshops, musical, story-telling, crafts, dance and Frisbee, to name a few. That s a lot of mission to pack into one inexpensive weekend. 2 September 2013 The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series presented by Fri. /Sat. Aug. 30/31: A Folk Project Special Event Uke New Jersey What s old is new. The ukulele, wildly popular in the 50s and camp in the 70s, is roaring back into prominence amongst younger musicians. Simple and easy to play, it can be an instrument of blinding virtuosity in the hands of its masters. The Folk Project will present some of those masters in a two-day event of concerts, workshops, and classes. See ukefest.shtml for details, prices. Fri., 9/6: Frank Vignola & Vinny Raniolo with Sleeping Bee Frank Vignola is well recognized among the world s greatest gypsy jazz guitarists. When he played the Minstrel in January 2010, he set the all-time record for attendance since we ve been at our current venue, with some audience members squeezed into seats on the wings of the stage itself. Frank s playing is brilliant, innovative, tasty and unbelievable in its virtuosity. His fellow guitarist Vinny Raniolo gathers no dust either, and is in perfect synch with him. Frank draws his influence from Django Reinhardt and Bucky Pizzarelli to such non-jazz icons as Frank Zappa, Les Paul, Eddie Van Halen and Ludwig van Beethoven. He s played with the likes of David Grisman Donald Fagan, Madonna and Ringo Starr. And tonight he comes to the Minstrel. Don t miss him. Opening act: Sleeping Bee is the new musical endeavor of multi-instrumentalists Andy Goessling and Lindsey Horner. The music exists in that unique early 21st century area where Folk, Jazz, Celtic song forms, melodic improvisation, and original ideas all happily co-exist. The music ranges from Keith Jarrett, to Bob Dylan to Turlough O Carolan to their own originals. Andy is heard on guitars, mandolins and bouzouki while Lindsey plays bass and various tin whistles. Fri., 9/13: Open Stage This is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. We ve often seen previews of our regular scheduled acts for the first time at Open Stage. Fri., 9/20: Mara Levine & Caroline Cutroneo with Ian Hicks Mara Levine and Caroline Cutroneo s strong suit is their voices: rich and vibrant and blended in gorgeous harmonies. They sing original, traditional and contemporary folk with a dash of blues. Mara has been a welcome recent addition to the Folk Project scene. Audience members so inclined will find plenty of opportunity to add their own voices to their choruses and find harmonies of their own. Mara and Caroline will be joined on stage by others in their circle of musical friends for a grand evening of beautiful music. From the day that 14-year-old opener Ian Hicks showed up at a Minstrel Open Stage in September 2012, he turned heads and opened eyes. The aplomb of his performance, the sophistication of his songwriting, the confidence of his voice all belied his youth. As an attendee at the Fall 2012 FP Festival, he was voted most wanted to return as a scheduled act in Spring This kid has a lot going for him, and you may be able to say, you saw him when. Fri., 9/27: Rory Block Heralded as a living landmark (Berkeley Express), a national treasure (Guitar Extra) and one of the greatest living acoustic blues artists (Blues Revue), Rory Block has committed her life and her career to preserving the Delta blues tradition and bringing it to life anew. A traditionalist and an innovator at the same time, she wields a fiery and haunting guitar and a vocal style that redefines the boundaries of acoustic blues and folk. The New York Times declared: Her playing is perfect, her singing otherworldly as she wrestles with ghosts, shadows and legends. The Minstrel is an acoustic music concert series run by the Folk Project, a non-profit folk music and arts organization. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $8.00 on your way in and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. 11 21st Annual New Jersey Storytelling Festival Sun., 9/22, Exercise you imagination as you stroll through a park filled with amazing sculpture. Forty NJ storytellers will regale all ages with stories whimsical, fantastic, heartwarming, and wise. Come hear Folk Project performers Mike Agranoff, Ken Galipeau, Kathryn Weidener and Carol Titus. 12 Folk Project Board Meeting August 6, 2013 Board Meeting: The Summary The Folk Project Board Meeting was called to order at 8:01 pm at the home of Joe and Laura Graziano. Present were: Joe Graziano, Mike Agranoff, Lois DeRitter, Jim Gartner, Barrett Wilson, Rachel Streich Elizabeth Lachowicz, Lindsey Meyer, Grover Kemble, Bill Henderson, Mark Schaffer, Pam Robinson, Jean Scully, Gloria Friedman, Eddie Roffman, Bob McNally, Pat Brangs, Scooter Ferguson, Mike DelVecchio. Absent: Joanne Cronin, Allan Kugel, Nancy Kelner, Leigh Walker. Guest: Christine DeLeon. July Board Meeting minutes were accepted without corrections. TREASURER S REPORT: Scooter admitted he doesn t look at the financial reports very often: I look at QuickBooks and I don t know what I m reading. Several other people agreed. Former Treasurer Rachel volunteered to give interested people a guided tour of our QuickBooks accounting system. Mark offered to host this QuickBooks workshop at his house; date and time TBD. NEW BUSINESS: JOB OPENINGS: Liz Pagan will be retiring as Newsletter Editor at the end of this year. Nancy Kelner is resigning as Publicity Chair, also as of the end of this year. Replacements are being sought for both positions. Bob suggested that if we can t find one person to do it all, the Newsleditor position could possibly be split into two graphics design and copy organizing? He also pointed out that the new Newsleditor would have the freedom to redesign the Newsletter if they wished. Elizabeth noted that Nancy has a lot of structures in place and most of the Publicity Committee will be staying on, so taking over the Chairmanship of the Committee should be relatively smooth. If anyone is interested in either job, or can recommend someone, please contact Elizabeth or a member of the FP Board. COMMITTEE REPORTS: MINSTREL STAFFING: Mike A. reported that MUF recently raised our rent, from $250 per week to $319, retroactively beginning July If we do nothing, the Minstrel will lose money. So, what to do? Mike identified 4 possible solutions: 1. Find ways to increase attendance; 2. Change our current business model (raise Door price, eliminate the Creel, book higher-visibility performers); 3. Move to a new location; 4. Renegotiate with MUF to roll back rent increase. A lengthy and lively discussion followed. When we first came to MUF, we were paying $200 a week instead of their usual $350 rent, because we could guarantee them rental income for 50 Fridays a year; our presence at MUF is worth $12,000 a year to them. Surely they need us as much as we need them? Mike noted that his contact at MUF has been with the church administrator, and not with the powers-that-be on MUF Board of Directors. Joe suggested sending a couple of FP Board Members to a MUF Board meeting to meet some of their Board members and open up a dialogue. Possible cost-cutting measures were discussed: eliminating Open Stages, eliminating opening acts, reducing the number of ticks for volunteers. Mike A. is reluctant to raise admission price to $10 for fear it will adversely affect Creel donations. Lori pointed out that the rent is going up because MUF needs money, and that eventually we will have to raise our admission price to $10, but that s still cheap compared to Sanctuary Concerts, Outpost in the Burbs, etc. Mike A. has already begun looking into moving the Minstrel back to the Somerset County Environmental Education Center in Basking Ridge (SCEEC), where we successfully ran concerts for many years, and we will investigate other venues as well. We would be reluctant to move, but we will do so if necessary. Bob McNally moved that the Board authorize the formation of an ad-hoc committee to strategize options, including looking at other venues as well as a vote of appreciation for Mike A. s many years of work with Minstrel. The motion passed. SPECIAL CONCERTS: Scooter reports that UkeFest tickets have not been selling as expected. He will begin selling tickets for the Saturday night concert only. He is also close to booking Art Garfunkel for a Special Concert, if he can get Art s manager to finalize dates. Meeting adjourned at 10:17 pm. Next month s meeting will be at Lindsey Meyer s home in Peapack. 12

13 Folk Project Special Concerts Presents Joni Mitchell s Blue A 40th Anniversary Celebration A Special Concert at The Minstrel Friday, October 4 Featuring a stellar cast of some of the New York City area s finest female singer/ songwriters plus Philadelphia percussionist Cheryl Praksher. The evening will include performances of all the songs from Blue plus original songs inspired by Joni Mitchell. Performers include: Meg Braun, Anna Dagmar, Honor Finnegan, Sharon Goldman, Victoria Lavington, Catherine Miles, Karyn Oliver, Elisa Peimer, Cheryl Praksher, Allison Scolla, Carolann Solebello, Allison Tartalia. These 12 women, known collectively as Chicks With Dip, represent a loose affiliation of female singer/songwriters in the New York City area who enjoy each other s company and the pleasures of good conversation, good songs and good dip. The Chicks will celebrate their tenth anniversary this year. The idea for the Blue show sprang up organically at a meeting in the summer of 2011, says Carolann Solebello, longtime Chick and former member of Red Molly We were discussing Joni Mitchell and what her songwriting has meant to each of us, and since we re always on the lookout for ways to collaborate, the 40th anniversary of Joni s masterpiece seemed the perfect opportunity.
