2 December 2009 The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series presented by The happenstance of holidays falling on Fridays makes for a light schedule for the Minstrel in December. But a lovely one nonetheless. Fri., Dec. 4: Chorus Song Night featuring Jean Rohe, Phil Shapiro & Carrie Shore, and Mike Agranoff This annual tradition is indicative of the fact that the Minstrel s parent organization, The Folk Project, has always been well populated by musicians and singers. Here is a night for you, the audience, to sing. It will be a program of songs with choruses, refrains, opportunities for harmony, and all the joys of singing with others. The songs will be either familiar to most, or readily picked up on the fly. They will be led round-robin fashion by three acts with a great repertoire of this sort of material: Jean Rohe has been singing with her family and her friends since she was five years old, and performing since she was 8. Now in her early 20s, she has branched out musically into such diverse fields as jazz and South American music. But she remembers her roots singing with the Rohe Family Band, and with the Folk Project. Phil Shapiro and Carrie Shore from Ithaca NY are oldschool folkies. With a vast repertoire of songs from the great Folk Revival era, enthusiastic singing, and fiddle and guitar accompaniment, they have led the late night singing sessions at the Old Songs Festival for many years. Mike Agranoff, program chairman of the Minstrel has been a part of Chorus Song Night since the Minstrel s first one in He also has a great repertoire of familiar songs, and songs you know even if you didn t know you knew them. Fri., Dec. 11: Open Stage This is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians and singers to perform a 15-minute set. Under the direction of our host, SCOOTER, our Open Stages have gained a reputation as a welcoming and respectful venue that has attracted traveling professionals as well as the area s local musicians. For info on performing at the Open Stage, visit The Open Stage is also a fascinating window on a musical community that is never seen by most of us non-musicians. The interplay, the comeraderie, and various motivations of those on stage are often as delightful as the music itself. From the obviously experienced traveling performer looking for (and sometimes getting) a gig, to the 14-year-old kid playing for the first time in front of an audience who is there specifically to hear her, our performers present a delightful spectrum of people taking folk music from the kitchen to the stage. Fri., Dec. 18: closed It just gets too crazy the week before Christmas. Fri., Dec. 25: closed Merry Christmas! Fri., Jan 1, 2010: closed Happy New Year! We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $7.00 on your way in, and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Children under 12 are free. Please send items to Eddie Roffman, eroffman@optonline.net. Alan Kugel has been working hard with Cecelia Rowedder, helping to get her house ready for the November FP Evening of Music. Kathy Haynie wasn t able to attend the November EOM, because she was busy directing Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory for the Sourland Hills Actors Guild, in Princeton. Pam Robinson and Bob Safranek are having a great time watching their new kittens grow. They showed off their new cat wall while hosting the November FP board meeting. Sandie Reilly just participated in a 52 mile ride with her new race team. It was 26 miles uphill, followed by a 26 mile time trial. She finished only one minute behind the NJ state women s champion. Elizabeth Lachowicz recently visited son Thomas at Missouri Military Academy; his teachers all had great reports. When she took Thomas out for dinner, Thomas picked up the tip! Jean Scully missed the Fall Festival, to attend the wedding of a young couple she has been helping to find a house. She gives a rave review of the recent NJ Shakespeare Festival production of Hamlet. Siobhan s marching band finished 4th place in the Northeast. FP president Mark Schaffer has been teaching Siobhan to drive. Many FP members have remarked on Connor Dugan Leszczuk s performance as a fiddler in the current NJ Shakespeare Festival production of the Grapes of Wrath. He was outstanding! Andy Koenig had a great performance at the recent Electronic Music Festival. He enjoyed sharing the stage with longtime FP member Don Slepian. He s currently very busy preparing for a raft of concerts in November. Mark and Robin Schaffer just came back from a visit to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They spent the entire day! Mark recommends it on three levels: as a musician, as a Folkie, and as a fan! Minutes (cont d) This is an interesting idea. It was referred for discussion between the respective Committees. Special Concerts: Pam s reports on the John McCutcheon concert on Nov 7 is that paid attendance was a disappointing 126. We sold lots of John s CDs. We took in 5 new memberships and sold a good amount of Folk Project merchandise as well. Artistically we had a grand success. (Rick said, I laughed; I cried; I fell in love all over again! ) Upcoming in 2010: Tern Swings! on January 30; Michael Manring on February 4. Fellowships: Jim Gartner will take the place of Jim West who will be retiring from the Board, and hence from the Committee. Festival: Lori notes that the final numbers for the Fall '09 festival are in and, minus the Agranoff endowment, we have a $501 loss for the festival. That includes over $600 in capital expenditures on sound equipment and first-aid kits. If you include the double Agranoff endowment, since we did not take one for spring, we cover the loss and end up about $1300 to the black. No matter how you wish to view it, we did well with the fall festival and are in the black for the year. My heartfelt thanks to all who helped us achieve this success. We are starting to work on the Spring '10 festival. One of our main tasks we will be focusing on how to increase attendance at our dances. Good of the Order is reported in the newsletter. Talk to Eddie if you ve had or know about someone who s had a significant event in their lives recently. Adjournment: was at 10:20 PM. The December Membership meeting will be at the Chimney Rock Inn. The next meeting after that will be on Jan. 5 at Ruth s house in Bedminster. 13
5 Folk Project Board Meeting November, 2009: Board Meeting: The Summary At the home of Bob & Pam, Nove. 10, The meeting was called to order at 8:03pm by President Mark Schaffer. Introduction of a guest: We welcomed Alison Mazie, who attended the meeting at Mike s invitation. She is interested in possibly joining the Board. Acceptance of the minutes: the minutes of October were accepted with one ed correction. Treasurer s Report: Eddie reported that all is well. Mike asked that, while the main figures such as current account balances, etc are available in the e-reports, he would also like to see them highlighted in the main report, just to make them easier to locate. Andy felt after a year of experience with the job, that there was not enough work for the Finance Committee to justify its continued existence as a separate Board Committee. He requested that the duties of the Finance Committee be folded into the Treasurer s Office. There was general agreement, and applause for Andy for a job well done! This recommendation is reflected in the Nomination Committee s report. Key Dates: The annual meeting will be held at the Chimney Rock Inn, 342 Valley Rd, Gillette, upstairs room. Time is 6:30pm for dinner, 8pm for the Annual Meeting. Attendees will pay $15 each; the FP will pick up the rest (you don t have to pay if you re just coming to the meeting). RSVP to the Mayor of Music Town, Mark Schaffer, president@folkproject.org or call See the announcement elsewhere in the newsletter. OLD BUSINESS: Nominations Committee: The committee s slate of Trustees and Officers for 2010, and their recommendations for Committee Chairs are reported elsewhere in the newsletter. Worker s Comp: Following the recommendation of our pro-bono attorneys, it was moved and passed (16 for, 2against, 1 abstention) to empower Ed, as Treasurer, to purchase Workers Compensation Insurance for the Folk Project. NEW BUSINESS: Reprint Folk Project Business Cards: A motion was passed to authorize Pam to have new FP business cards printed up with a limit on expenses of $500. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Web&Publicity: Mark is learning to do some of the technical stuff. He s got expert help from Cathy Thomas, Barb Moo, and others. The target date for cutover to the new web site is still December 31, 2009, but it s running late. Pam reports that we have our first Corporate Member, Boyles Hotel Corp, who runs the Best Western of Morristown. Finance: Andy says we re still not back to where we were when we opened the account, but we re getting close. He reminds us that markets are volatile and may change. Minstrel: Mike reports that last month Sandie had decided to retire as Volunteer Chair but she s changed her mind and decided to stay on. Our core audience of regulars (the people who come to the Minstrel because it s the Minstrel) is shrinking. The answer is to continue booking first-rate acts who will bring their own audience some of whom may decide they like the place and become regulars. Volunteers: Sandie says she still needs volunteers. They have a new plan to make it easier to volunteer and easier for the Head Staff people to run the shows. Pam said she missed the old sign-up book that used to be available at the Minstrel so that people could see what jobs were available and sign up on the spot. Sandie responded that the new web-based procedures make that difficult. There was a short discussion of looking for high-tech ways to have the best of both worlds, but no conclusions. HSNOI: Ralph reports that the 6-piece bluegrass originals band from PA, Cabinet, scheduled for 6:45 on 10/5 called Sandie on her cell about 6:30 PM to say they were stuck in traffic in Scranton and would be late... "about 7:30 PM." Bill Griese, scheduled for the later taping, showed up about 7:00 so we taped his show first and finished up around 8:30. Then we tried calling the cell phone from which the band had called Sandie, but got no answer. By 9:15 we concluded that there wasn't enough time left to get a 5 or 6 piece band into the studio and set up before our 10:00 PM deadline to vacate the studio. Cabinet still has not contacted us to apologize or explain what happened to them, but according to their manager they are OK (not hurt in an accident or otherwise). Bill put on a great performance. Internal Affairs: Jean reports that the November Evening of Music will be at Cecilia Rowedder s house in Highland Park. The December Holiday party will be at Judy Hagan s house in Rockaway. Swingin Tern: Connie reports by that the two dances in October netted a little over $200. S n T are well ahead for the year, and according to Eddie's calculations are running about $70 in the black per dance after covering Folk Project overhead. They have decided to increase the caller and band fees. The Harvest Hoot is November 21. Other upcoming events are the New Years Eve dance, the January 2 Anniversary dance and Tern Swings on January 30. The NYE dance caller is Nils Fredland who is AMAZING. Connie reports that they need to drum up more volunteers for the regular dances. Joel wants to take a step back, so they need to recruit one or two others to do Head Staff. In order to recruit more dancers at Festival, they propose a dance only ticket for Festival at a reduced price. 12 MoFiddles/Menzel Violins: 4260 Town Center Way, Livingston, NJ, Bluegrass & Old Time Music Jam 1st Thursdays 7pm, RSVP to (973) or mo@mofiddles.com; Mountainside Library Folk Music Cafe: or (908) Music at the Mission: West Milford Presbyterian Church, 1452 Union Valley Rd., West Milford, (973) , Sat., 12/11: Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams Music on Main Street: United Methodist Church, 69 Main St., Woodbridge. 7 10 Come one, come all to the Folk Project's Annual General Membership Meeting and Board of Trustees Election Start the Holiday season off right, schmoozing with your fellow Follkies at our annual general meeting, which will take place on Tues. Dec. 1 at the Chimney Rock Inn, 6:30pm dinner/8pm meeting. In addition to catching up on all that's new with the Folk Project over the past year, we will also be electing three Trustees for three-year terms ( ), one Trustee to complete a one-year term (through 2010), and three new Officers, as well as confirming new Chairs for our Membership and Community Service Committee positions. The three Trustees whose terms expire Dec are Jim West, Ruth Wolfish and Scooter Ferguson. Jim West, after many, many years of service on the Folk Project Board, is stepping down from his Trustee position. Both Scooter and Ruth are willing to serve for another three years, through Stepping up, enthusiastically willing to become involved with the FP Board's activities, is Alison Mazie. Mark Schaffer, although stepping down as President (aka Mayor of Music Town ), will continue as both Publicity and WebMaster Chair. He is vacating his oneyear Trustee slot. Evelyn Maurer will take oer this position. Additional nominations for Trustee may also be made by any member during the meeting, prior to the election. All members attending the meeting may (and are encouraged to) vote for the Trustee positions. Continuing as Trustees through December 2010 are Jim King and Allen Kugel, and as Trustees through 2011 are Lois DeRitter, Jim Gartner and Brad Pryor. Outgoing Officers, completing their two-year, term-limited positions, are President Mark Schaffer, Vice President Evelyn Maurer, and Secretary Rick Thomas. The Officer Nominees for 2010 are: President: Scooter Ferguson, VP: Elizabeth Lachowicz, and Secretary: Chris Riemer. Eddie Roffman will continue for a second year as our Treasurer. Outgoing Committee Chairs are Membership: Pat Rolston and Community Service: Elizabeth Lachowicz. Filling those shoes will be Rick Thomas for Membership and Pat Brangs for Community Service. Rivka Willick will step down as Chair of Storytellers, but will continue to represent the group a little longer, until a new Chairperson is found. We are hoping to see you at the meeting and pre-meeting dinner on Dec. 1. If you plan to come early for the dinner and socializing, remember to RSVP. See page 1 for details. Attention Lovers & Lovers of Song! This year's Valentine s Extravaganza at the Minstrel on Fri., Feb. 12, 2010 will feature a performance by the Project's Minstrels of Love Chorus. We are now calling all singers to joing this legendary group no auditions, beginners welcome and all volunteers accepted. If you are interested in singing in a few short choral pieces at our annual Valentine s Show on 2/12/2010, please contact John Lamb by Dec. 15 at johnlamb@aol.com. is preferred; if you don't do , call (973) Leave a detailed message on the machine if nobody answers. Please tell him 1) Your name 2) What voice part you sing (soprano, alto, tenor or bass if you know. If you don't know, we will figure it out later). 3) Days and times from 1/2/2010 through 2/11/2010 that you would be available to rehearse. 4) What prior choral experience, if any, you have. 5) How to contact you. 6) Any questions you may have. 7) Optional bonus item: Any suggestions for songs that we should sing. There will be six scheduled rehearsals between 1/2 and 2/11, held at John's home in Randolph and lasting about two hours each. We would like everyone to come to the final rehearsal plus at least three of the other five. Rehearsal dates and times will be chosen based on your responses. If fewer than eight people with compatible schedules volunteer, there will be no Minstrels of Love this time around. Either way, all volunteers will be notified by 12/20/2009 as to what will happen and when. Storytellers Corner Interested in hearing stories or learning the art of telling? A great way to begin is by joining one of the many storytelling groups throughout the state. Meetings are open to listeners and storytellers of all levels of experience. Some groups conduct workshops that address aspects of storytelling or hone telling skills. Many meetings have swaps, where individuals share stories with other members. All groups have storytellers who are available for paid engagements. Check the Folk Project calendar for events and links.
