2 May 2012 The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series presented by Thurs., 5/3: A special Thursday movie night at the Minstrel Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune NOTE: SPECIAL 7:30 SHOW TIME! This show will be free to the public. The Minstrel will be presenting a special screening of the documentary film Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune. Directed by Ken Bowser, the film gives a biography of the iconic singer and songwriter of the 60 s with interviews and commentaries by Joan Baez, Billy Bragg, Tom Hayden and others. The film will be introduced by Phil s sister, Sonny Ochs, who will be available after the viewing for a Q&A session, and back stories and details not covered in the film. Fri., 5/4: Phil Ochs Song Night An all-star cast consisting of Kim & Reggie Harris, Magpie, John Flynn, Joe Jencks, Greg Greenway and Pat Wictor will perform The Songs of Phil Ochs. Phil was one of the seminal figures of the 60 s Folk movement and penned dozens of classics that live today in the hearts of fans and performers alike. The evening will be hosted by Phil s sister, Sonny Ochs, who is still an active figure in the folk community. The performers will also include some of their own songs, and Sonny will add historical and biographical notes to put these songs in the context of the era and the times. Fri., 5/11: Open Stage This is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. Friday, 5/18: Frank & Hank, Bill Griese An eclectic mix of music from bluegrass to jazz to standards comes from the agile musical minds of Folk Project members Frank Sole and Hank (Hen3ry) Nerenberg. Frank is a skilled guitartist both in lead flatpicking styles and in Django-inspired jazz. Hen3ry (the 3 is silent) has one of the widest ranging musical minds in the Project, and is a genius at innovative and appropriate arrangement. They were a big hit opening for Frank Vignola at the Minstrel last October. Our opening act is Bill Griese, a singer/songwriter with a traditional folk-rock approach, Bill delivers warm, smooth vocals and a relaxed pick-less guitar style playing introspective original material or refreshingly unexpected covers. A real charmer. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $7.00 on your way in, and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Children under 12 are free. 7 Folk Project Board Meeting April 2012 Board Meeting: The Summary The monthly meeting of the Folk Project Board...was called to order at 8:01 pm on April 3, 2012 at the home of Mark and Robin Schaffer in Rockaway. Due to four new business items on the agenda, President Eddie kept the meeting moving at a good clip and nobody fell off the wagon. Present were Pat Brangs, Lois DeRitter, Jim Gartner, Elizabeth Lachowicz, Bob McNally, Ed Roffman, and Bobbie Rosengarten (Trustees); Mike Agranoff, Carl Croce, Howie Goldman, Joe Graziano, Lindsey Meyer, Sandy Reilly, Pam Robinson, Mark Schaffer, Robin Schaffer, Jean Scully, and Rachel Streich and Leigh Walker (Other Board Members). Absent were Nancy Dugan, Allan Kugel, Scooter Ferguson, Gloria Friedman, Nancy Kelner, Kevin Redden, and Scott Ross. There were three corrections to the March minutes, which were then approved as amended. Treasurer Rachel Streich reported that she received a generous check from an anonymous donor to be applied toward scholarships for Spring Festival Our financial ship is in good shape. In new business: Minstrel chair Mike Agranoff received a request from Scott Alarik to booktalk his newlypublished folk music novel for no charge to the Project. Festival chairs Mark and Robin will approach him about doing a workshop at spring festival. Board secretary Lindsey Meyer moved to create a limited access section of the FP Board wiki that would be accessible to the president and secretary. They would have discretion to create a second limited access area for other Board members. (The wiki is currently accessible to anyone.) In future, documents that are archived on individuals computers can be shared with Board members who have a need to know. Editing capabilities will continue to be restricted. The motion passed. Mark Schaffer presented a proposal to use some of our cash reserves to increase audience numbers at several of our venues by allowing committee chairs to take relatively greater risks without fear of financial repercussions. He then moved to authorize Swingin Tern, the Minstrel, and Special Concerts to invest $2,000 each, from the general funds, to increase their attendance. After much discussion, the motion passed. Robin Schaffer proposed forming an ad hoc group to brainstorm ways to build our FP community with the goal of finding ways to improve the social aspects of our group. Following positive response from the Board, she ll move forward with this project after Festival. In committee reports: Festival co-chairs Robin & Mark Schaffer reported that staff is set for the spring festival and the workshop schedule is posted on the website. Although pre-registration spots went like hotcakes, the actual registration has been somewhat slow. 145 people have registered, leaving 35 spaces which have now been opened up to the waiting list. Fall Festival will be at Camp Bernie Oct. 5-7 and one performer has already been booked. Minstrel needs new head staff volunteers, since Rick Thomas has moved out of state and Mark Schaffer is working on Festival. Contact Scooter. Special Concerts chair Howie Goldman reported slow early ticket sales for the Keith Murphy concert on April 28. He ll send out an blast and also advertise to the dance community. The meeting was adjourned at 9:56 pm. Next month s meeting is on May 1 at the home of Lindsey Meyer in Peapack. Board meetings are open to all Folk Project members. Nancy and Russ Kelner spent a recent weekend in Bucks County where they attended the monthly meeting of the Bucks County Folk Song Society on a Sunday night. After a song circle, the evening ended with several small instrumental and vocal circles. Nancy and Russ said together, We had a great time. Lindsey Meyer celebrated her son Wyatt s 22nd birthday at a Bruce Springsteen concert. Lindsey said, The music was great, Bruce put on quite a show. In a parallel Bruce encounter, Lois DeRitter recently enjoyed a visit to the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, viewing the current Springsteen exhibit: From Asbury Park to the Promised Land. Elizabeth Lachowicz spent a recent weekend in a convent, visiting her sister, Sister Frances. They had a lot of fun and enjoyed their sisterly reunion. Mike Agranoff recently got a tour of the Steinway Piano factory in Queens. He said, It was really interesting. I now know why those Steinways cost so much! Pam Robinson, Bob Safranek and Mike Agranoff attended a private screening in NYC of Rocky Mountain Express, the Imax movie that Connie Crawford consulted on. Pam said, Wow, it was stunning, with amazing scenery and great history. It even had a rainbow! Siobhan Scully decided to change her major from equine studies to large animal science. This summer, she ll be working full time on a farm. (Tip: It ll be impolite to hold your nose when you hear the details of what she ll be shoveling.) And, while Mark Schaffer was out of town on April 2, Siobhan visited his mother to celebrate her 92nd birthday Mark couldn t be there because he and Robin were away in Florida, meeting up with Robin s siblings to surprise Robin s mom with an 80th birthday party. Carl enjoyed a recent performance at the People s Voice Coffeehouse with Gathering Time and FP members Toby Fagenson and Mara Levine. Great music, says Carl! Bob McNally recently sat in the Conductor s Circle as the Philadelphia Orchestra performed Ravel s Bolero at the Kimmel Center. Bob quoted a review saying, Sitting so close to the musicians should appeal to anyone who appreciates intensity and passion. Bob said, It was unbelievable! 13
