The place is The Minstrel. The day is a Sunday. The admission is $9. Anyone can just show up. But anyone who has volunteered for the Folk Project and RSVPs gets dinner and the show for FREE! THE SHOW is the Valentines Extravaganza, now featuring TWO special guest accompanists: Jersey jazz great Grover Kemble and America s national bluegrass saxophone treasure Andy Goessling. The Extravaganza spotlights two dozen Project performers, and our Valentine s Love Trio under the direction of Frank Sole, and our 10-piece Loving Hearts Club Big Boogie Band. THE DINNER will be catered through the generosity of Jersey Mike s Submarine & Sandwich Shop, and the Folk Project Board. We ll serve our extra special Extravaganza desserts, and for the first time ever we ll serve everyone delicious sandwiches, too. Tonight it s three cheers for the volunteers. Great show! Great food! 2 April 2013 The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series presented by Fri., 4/5: Lou & Peter Berryman with Dave Kleiner Rescheduled from cancellation after Hurricane Sandy Lou & Peter Berryman rank with such geniuses as Flanders & Swan, Tom Lehrer, and Alan Sherman as masters of the art of comedic song. Peter especially, who does most of the lyrics, has an uncanny sense of the English language to put the perfect words to music that bring a smile, irrespective of the subject matter. The subject matter can range from flights of fancy, to carrying an unlikely concept to its even less likely conclusion, to simultaneous interlocking dialogue by two people about entirely different subjects that somehow seem to connect to each other. Peter plays 12-string guitar and Lou plays a seeing-eye accordion. (You ll see what we mean.) Dave Kleiner is a perfect opener for the Berrymans. A past Folk Project president, Dave is familiar to Minstrel regulars for his shows with his wife Liz Pagan. Tonight s program will feature mostly Dave solo, focusing on his own wacky wordy songs and offbeat sense of humor. Fri., 4/12: Open Stage This is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. We ve often seen previews of our regular scheduled acts for the first time at Open Stage. Sun., 4/14: Valentines Day Extravaganza SPECIAL 5pm SHOW Rescheduled from the snowed-out February date. This all-folk Project show is a perennial favorite. Twenty-four different members perform songs extolling the joys and woes of love in all its grandeur, foolishness, heartbreak and comedy. Many singers are backed by Project pros, either our ten-piece Valentine s Day Loving Hearts Club Big Boogie Band (including Railroad Earth s Andy Goessling) or Frank Sole s Valentine s Love Trio. This year the trio will feature guest artist and Jersey jazz great Grover Kemble. Audience-composed Messages from the Heart and delicious desserts make this a unique community event. Special admission price of $9 includes refreshments. Fri., 4/19: Annie & The Hedonists with Tumbling Bones Annie and the Hedonists knocked everyone s socks off at the Spring 2012 Folk Project Festival. This great high-energy multi-instrumental 4-piece band features the expressive singing of Annie Rosen with great harmonies and hot guitar, bass, keyboard, and clarinet by Hedonists Jonny Rosen, Peter Davis, and Don Young. They put their unique stamp on old jug band tunes, torchy blues, standards, bluegrass, gospel, labor ballads, and early jazz. Tumbling Bones is a young old-timey (oxymoron intended) trio featuring fiddle, guitar, and banjo, with great traditional vocal harmony. They play old time dance music and country blues with an authentic feel that belies the fact that they re all in their 20 s. Fri., 4/26: Christine Lavin with The Lords of Liechtenstein Christine Lavin is the Folk World s long-reigning Queen of the Intelligently Absurd. The title of one of her earlier albums, I Don t Make This Stuff Up, I Just Make It Rhyme says it all. She has an eye for the ironic and the absurd in the news and everyday life, and puts it into song. And dresses it all up in skillful guitar work, electronic loops, and wonderful gimmicks like baton twirling. She s irrepressible, and ya gotta love her. Dan and Noah Rauchwerk masquerade as The Lords of Liechtenstein. These irrepressible brothers, ages 18 and 24, play surprisingly sophisticated original songs accompanied on guitar, banjo, and ukulele. They create an innovative blend of folk, roots, reggae, and pop music, presented with charming inter-song shtick, bedecked in the latest in GenZ sartorial hipness: sweater-vests. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $8.00 on your way in and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Children 12 and under are free. Lindsey Meyer: Announced that her son Wyatt just got his very first full time job! Allan Kugal: Is looking forward to attending the European Human Behavior and Evolution Associations conference in Amsterdam at the end of March. Jean Scully: went to the Metropolitan Museum s recent show on Matisse In Search of True Painting, which chronicled Matisse s obsessive painting style as a means of progressing. Jean also is heading out soon to her offsprings college in PA to attend a Drag Show complete with students AND faculty. Her offspring also recently received an award in recognition of her work helping out young kids. Mark Schaffer: mentioned his knee is better! Joanne Cronin: is looking forward to getting her Geek on when she attends an upcoming Science Fiction conference. MIke Agranoff: Played at The Flurry Festival in mid February. He also ran a Themes in a Hat session, which went well. Mike will also be on staff at this summers Common Ground Festival in Michigan, where he ll be teaching guitar workshops, and running song swaps Folk Project Bylaws Change... Atttention political animals of all stripes and hues Currently our By Laws say: 3. Expenditures of $50.00 (fifty dollars) or less may be authorized by the President. Presidential expenditures of more than $50.00 must be approved by the Directors. Board Member Eddie Roffman has proposed that the amount be amended to Expenditures of $ (two hundred fifty dollars) or less may be authorized by the President. Presidential expenditures of more than $ must be approved by the Directors. In order to amend the By Laws, the constitution says: Enacting, amending, or repealing a by-law will be done by proposing the action in writing at a Directors Meeting and ratifying it a second meeting, at least three weeks later, by a two-thirds vote of those present. 5 Folk Project Board Meeting March 2013 Board Meeting: The Summary The February Meeting of the Folk Project Board was called to order at 8 pm at the home of Bob Safranek and Pam Robinson. Present were: Pam Robinson, Barrett Wilson, Lindsey Meyer, Bobbie Rosengarten, Lois DeRitter, Allan Kugel, Joanne Cronin, Jim Gartner (trustees); Rachel Streich, Mark Shaffer, Jean Scully, Joe Graziano, Mike Agranoff, Bill Henderson, Sandie Reilly, Elizabeth Lachowicz, Gloria Friedman, Nancy Kelner, Bob Safranek, Leigh Walker, Mike DelVecchio, Lori Falco, and Eddie Roffman. Absent: Pat Brangs, Scooter Ferguson, Grover Kemble, and Bob McNally. There was no quorum, so the Minutes from January and February s meetings could not be accepted. TREASURER S REPORT: I m still learning says Bill. Former Treasurer Rachel reported that Forms 1099-MISC for 2012 have been prepared, mailed to recipients and filed with the IRS. COMMITTEE REPORTS: SPECIAL CONCERTS: In Scooter s absence, Mark Shaffer reported that 11 tickets were sold so far for the Anne Hills/Michael Smith house concert at his and Robin s home on 3/9/13. The Evening of Music is also taking place that evening at the Shaffer s, beginning 2 hours after the concert ends. There will be another house concert at Mark and Robin s featuring Raina Rose, on April 21. Mike A. reports that Scooter s planned ukulele Special Concert event may be moved to Labor Day weekend to accommodate an appearance by Susan Werner at MUF on 8/21/13. SWINGIN TERN: Leigh reports that Swingin Tern is doing pretty well. They are planning 4 big event dances per year, including the upcoming double dance with Perpetual E-Motion on 4/6/13. Mike A. says he saw Perpetual E-Motion at Dance Flurry recently and says they were freaking incredible. There will be another techno contra dance on the first Saturday in September. Fanwood Library director Danny Weiss (Barry s bandmate in Silk City) played with him, and publicized Silk City s upcoming Minstrel appearance on 3/22/13. INTERNAL AFFAIRS: The Valentines Day Show, cancelled due to a snowstorm, has been rescheduled for 4/14/13. Mark is organizing it and is planning to turn it into a volunteer appreciation event. Instead of desserts, they will be serving dinner (sub sandwiches) plus drinks and desserts. Mark is getting the subs from Jersey Mike s below cost.
