1 Strand: Dance Level: Grade 3-4 Cntent: 45 minute bradcast + hands-n activity LIVE Arts: Bdy Shakin Bgie Makin Fun! With Heather Camern Heather Camern, prfessinal cntemprary dancer, presents Bdy Shakin, Bgie Makin FUN! This is a high energy prgram that explres creative mvement and the art f chregraphy. Students will be lead thrugh a warm up that invites them t take wnership f their wn physicality and persnal style f mvement. Thrugh games and activities students will be lead thrugh a chregraphic prcess that teaches them the three basic cmpnents f mvement: BODY, SPACE and TIME. Using the tls and skills they have develped thrugh lead imprvisatins, they will wrk in small grups t create unique and cntemprary mvement pieces. Please see page 3 fr Teacher Guided Pst-Bradcast Activities. These activities will give students the pprtunity t apply what they have learned during the bradcast. Abut the Artist Heather Camern hlds a Bachelr Degree in Cntemprary Dance at Cncrdia University (Mntreal). In 2005 she mved t Regina (SK) as a c-funder f the FadaDance Trupe, wrking in cllabratin with her chrts t create riginal and whimsical dance perfrmances. As a sl artist, Heather presented her ne-wman theatrical dance shw, Bney Bnes, at the German Internatinal Festival f Dance and Theatre. In 2011 she created and perfrmed Hney n Wallpaper at Regina s Glbe Theatre. Mst recently, she created and perfrmed the cmedic and quirky sl, Waiting fr the Bus, presented by New Dance Hrizns as part f the Prairie Dance Circuit (2016). Heather has perfrmed wrk by Jhanna Bundn, Bill Cleman, Rbin Pitras, Michele Sereda and Turner Prize. Curriculum Aims & Gals Creative/Prductive: Students will be invited t use the element f chance t create riginal mvement sequences. Critical/Respnsive: The bradcast will explre hw dancers use the bdy, space and time t create mvement. Cultural/Histrical: Students will learn abut Merce Cunningham s chance chregraphy. 1

3 Teacher Guided Pst-Bradcast Activity Using the tls and skills they have develped during the bradcast, students will wrk independently and in small grups t chregraph unique and cntemprary mvement pieces thrugh Cunningham s Chance Chregraphy technique. DURATION: 45min 1hur SKILLS FROM BROADCAST: 1. Each student will have chregraphed 6 mvements that crrespnd with 6 wrds 2. Students are familiar with chance chregraphy thrugh the film clip they watched n Merce Cunningham 3. Students have been encuraged t experiment with SPACE and TIME t enrich their dance vcabulary LESSON PLAN Materials/ Resurces fr Activities - Large pen space fr students t dance in, such as a gymnasium r a large classrm with desks pushed against the wall - Dice (preferable 1 per student, but they can als share) - One cpy f the Chance Chregraphy list per student (page 6) - A cmputer with speakers, r ther equipment fr playing music - Music: Heather has created a list f music that teachers can try- see page Create Sls a) Have students spread ut and sit n the flr. Each student shuld have a cpy f the Chance Chregraphy List and a die. b) Ask students t rll the die 10 times and recrd the numbers they rll n their Chance Chregraphy Print Out. They shuld end up with a list f 10 numbers written dwn. Each number f the die crrespnds with a mvement frm the bradcast: 1) Explde 2) Flick 3) Slash 4) Push 5) Flat 6) Twist c) Invite the students t get up, and t begin creating a mvement sequence based n the rder they have written dwn. Smetimes mvements will be repeated. Encurage students t find new ways t present the same mvements by varying the SPACE r TIME f the mvement. Fr example, the same mvement culd be dne slwer r faster. The same mvement culd be dne lying dwn r travelling acrss the rm. Althugh the rder f the mvements is set, students shuld be encuraged t take creative liberties in hw they present their riginal vcabulary. The students must memrize this sequence, practicing it s that they knw it well. (10 min) d) Once the students have created their sls, invite half f the students perfrm their sls (at the same time) while the ther half watches. Play music while 3

4 students perfrm. Then, invite the secnd half f the grup t perfrm. Play different music if pssible. (5 minutes) 2. Create Duets Divide students int grups f 2. Their next challenge is t wrk tgether t find the best way t create a duet frm their individual sls. Sme ptins include: a) finding a way t share the space s that bth sls unfld at the same time b) learning parts/all f each thers sls s they can perfrm the same material tgether (unisn wrk) c) taking turns ding sectins f their sls, back and frth, like a mvement cnversatin d) mixing up all f these ideas & cming up with mre!!(10 min) e) Optin: If students are dne early, r need an extra challenge, teacher can give ut a SPACIAL r TIME challenge. Fr example: D yur duet in physical cntact the whle time OR Make sure the dancers are always dancing in ppsite speeds OR d yur duet s the dancers are always facing back t back. (5 min) f) Give students a 3 min warning befre they perfrm their duets. They will use this time t practice and rehearse their duet. g) Invite student t share the duets with the classrm, ne at a time. Play different music fr each duet, s that the students are als experiencing Chance Music. The idea is that the music will c-exist with the dance, but the dance is als strng enugh t live n it s wn. (20 min) h) Encurage the audience t watch fr effective mments. What wrked and why? If time permits, allw fr this type f psitive feedback after each perfrmance. i) Optin: If time permits, yu can experiment with watching the same duet twice, playing cntrasting music fr each perfrmance. This allws fr a slightly different utcme each time. 4
