1 September October 2008 Dowtow Pla Dowtow Study Moves ito Secod Phase Tow Builder Studios (TBS), the Village's Dowtow Strategic Pla cosultat, has completed the first part of its study of Gle Elly's Cetral Busiess District. The purpose of the study is to idetify possible opportuities for the dowtow area. This first phase of data collectio ad aalysis, which took place over a period of several moths, ivolved gatherig iput from residets ad busiesses through i-perso iterviews, surveys ad feedback forms, a Tow Hall Meetig ad a ope house "desig studio." The desig studio was held over three days i a dowtow commercial space ad gave members of the commuity the opportuity to offer suggestios about the future directio of Gle Elly's Cetral Busiess District. Usig the iformatio gathered, TBS has compiled a overview of their fidigs, which is beig reviewed by the Dowtow Advisory Committee (DAC), a 15- member ad hoc group of residets ad busiess owers appoited by the Village Board to assist with the pla. The draft plas will the be reviewed by the DAC ad preseted to the public at a Tow Hall Meetig ad ope house this fall. Followig the DAC's review, TBS will move o to the ext phase of the study preparatio of recommeded plas. Fire Compay Fud Drive ad Ope House The Voluteer Fire Compay's aual fud drive will begi i October. Doatios made each year by Gle Elly residets ad busiesses help pay for firefightig ad mechaical gear, vehicles ad other life-savig equipmet. To help kick off this aual appeal, the Gle Elly Voluteer Fire Compay will hold a ope house o Saturday, October 4, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., ad Moday, October 6, from 7-9 p.m., as part of Fire Prevetio Week. 2 Public Meetigs to Address Fudig for Street ad Storm Sewer Program September 9 ad 17, 7:30 p.m., Gle Elly Civic Ceter I 2000, voters approved a bod referedum for the Village's Street ad Storm Sewer Improvemet Program. This program was desiged to correct draiage systems proe to floodig ad to improve A Special Report about the Street ad Storm Sewer Program was mailed to residets i late August. the coditio of Gle Elly's roadways through a more aggressive 20-year cycle of repair, rather tha the former 30- year cycle. I previous commuity opiio surveys, residets had expressed dissatisfactio with the coditio of their eighborhood streets. While the Village has udertake 17 storm sewer improvemet projects ad rehabilitated over 40 miles of the Village's 82 miles of roadways, certai streets still eed repairs ad/or resurfacig. Betwee 2003 ad 2007, however, costructio costs have rise by over 40 percet, ecessitatig a reevaluatio of fudig for this program. The Village's preferred solutio uses reveues freed up from retirig bod issues to address this shortfall i projected costructio costs. This proposal is ot aticipated to add sigificatly to the tax burde of residets. A wide variety of trees are susceptible to Gypsy Moths. 7 September October 2008 Voluteer Profile: Le ad Grace Swaso Throughout their 40 years i Gle Elly, Le ad Grace Swaso have made voluteerig a sigificat part of their lives. Whe their three childre were youg, the Swasos voluteered for Idia Guides, Scout Troops ad PTA. Later, Le served o the Zoig Board of Appeals ad the Pla Commissio where he recetly fiished his term of office. Grace was a member of the Library Board ad served as its presidet i the late 1980s ad early 1990s. A retired trial lawyer, Le's iterest i the law first led him to the Zoig Board of Appeals. "I wated to lear about the process of zoig ad plaig," Le said. "I thik people should cosider their uique talets ad iterests ad choose a commissio accordigly." Later, as a member of the Pla Commissio, Le was ivolved with several high-profile projects, icludig ew towhome projects ad the Daby Crossig Shoppig Ceter. "We had to evaluate thigs like desity, traffic patters, sidewalks ad driveways, as well as etraces ad exits." "As commissio members, we do't eact ordiaces," Le cotiued, "but rather evaluate the project, hold a hearig ad make our recommedatios to the Village Board, which makes the fial determiatio." Grace was elected to the Gle Elly Library Board whe it was reviewig plas for a ew public library ad later served as its presidet. "We were ivolved i both the iitial study ad the costructio phase," Grace said. Later she served o the District 41 School Board at a time whe the school district was addig oto several of its schools to accommodate a growig studet populatio. Today, Grace is presidet of the Gle Elly Library Foudatio, which oversees a edowmet for programs that erich the library. "I've bee fortuate to have worked with may woderful board members," Grace said. "They were great groups that jelled icely ad also very diverse: youg people, seiors, accoutats, lawyers, housewives there were't may groups that were't represeted." Grace stays active today by workig as a Chicago Architecture Foudatio docet. "I have a iterest i architecture ad eed to fid thigs to keep busy ad out of trouble," she joked. Le regularly shops for the Gle Elly Food Patry oe of several teams of idividuals who assist the orgaizatio throughout the moth. "After my retiremet, I had stopped by the Seior Ceter at Grace Luthera Church to get my seior citize pass. The Food Patry is located there as well ad I stopped i ad asked them if they eeded help.
