Kindle. ipad. Athens- Limestone Public Library. You ve heard of all of these, right? You know that all four deliver digital content? No? Well, you re not alone. According to the Pew Internet Project, most people don t know that U.S. public libraries provide ebooks and other digital resources. In fact, the Library offers more books than ever before. At the Athens-Limestone Public Library we began offering ebooks years before the Kindle was invented. In 2010 the library joined CamelliaNet to increase the number of ebooks available. This was not the beginning nor will it be the end of our commitment to reading, knowledge, imagination and lifelong learning for all. Take advantage of one of the ereader classes to learn how to fully utilize this collection. ebooks are not the only changes coming to the Library. There are changes to policy outlined here on page 1. Most importantly, at the end of this month we say bon voyage to Jean Huber. Jean has faithfully served patrons at our Research Desk for over a decade. She is retiring to spend more time travelling with her husband and her grandchildren. It s not good-bye, but see you soon. We are grateful to have Kayren Harbin moving up to become Head of Research. Paula S.W. Laurita Director Change is Coming to the Library January 1 st! VHS fines will now be $.35 a day instead of $1.00. Volume 2, Issue 10 December 2012 Shopping Online? Because of rising postal charges, a $.50 fee will be applied when physical mail must be sent regarding bills, fines, or overdue items. If you work or attend school in Limestone County but do not live here, your card will now be a Complimentary Library Card with a 10 item check-out limit. Your physical card will not change, just its description. Bee Prepared! For those who are temporarily visiting Limestone County and will be here for 6 months or less, either for work or personal reasons, you will receive a temporary Traveler Library Card with a 2 item check-out limit. 2 ereader Classes Saturday, December 1 st, 2:00 pm Thursday, December 27 th, 6:00 pm Additional classes will be held in January and throughout the year. It s Back! The Acropolis Third Thursday Readers: The Third Thursday Readers are taking December off! Join us in January for a discussion of The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett A treasure worth killing for. Sam Spade, a slightly shopworn private eye with his own solitary code of ethics. A perfumed grafter named Joel Cairo, a fat man name Gutman, and Brigid O Shaughnessy, a beautiful and treacherous woman whose loyalties shift at the drop of a dime. These are the ingredients of Dashiell Hammett s coolly glittering gem of detective fiction, a novel that has haunted three generations of readers. The Third Thursday Readers meet at the Athens Senior Center. Date: January 19th, 2013 Time: 9:00 am Address: 912 Pryor St. Athens, AL Have questions about the book club? Call Mrs. Kayren at Page 2 Make Candy Sushi Friday, December 14th, 3-4:30 pm Drop-In Holiday Crafts Friday, December 21st, 3-4:30 pm Stretching Your Entertainment Dollars Have you cut back on your cable to save money? No problem. Your Library offers a wide selection of DVDs, including numerous new releases, for free with a library card. Some DVDs require a $5 deposit, which you get back when the DVD is returned. This encourages people to return the hot, new releases on time. All movies can be checked out for one week. Do note though that if returned late there is a $1.00 fee per day. The selection of movies and TV shows is wide. Did you miss Call The Midwife on PBS? Check out the DVD at the Library! Want a great movie for the family to watch? Check out Hugo at the Library. Friends Of The Library Meeting Have visiting family who only likes mysteries? Check out a Jesse Stone DVD at the Library. You are invited to join the Friends of the Library for their annual membership meeting. Everyone is welcome to join us, enjoy refreshments, learn about how the Friends support your Library, and hear about the future of the Library from Board of Trustees Chair Rod Huffman. Date: Monday, January 14th Time: 10:00 am

The Library Foundation needs to raise about $30,000 more no later than December 31st. Donations continue to come in, but every gift will bring us closer to the goal. There are many opportunities to support the Foundation. Gifts of money, stocks, etc., are accepted. The entire price of your Evening At Athena ticket goes to the Foundation. Quilt raffle tickets go toward the Foundation fund. Your partnership is planting a legacy of community education. All donors of $5,000 and more will be recognized on the new Library s special donor wall. For more information contact Debbie Joyner at debbiejoyner@comcast.net. Need a quick teacher gift? A Library cup with treats is a great gift and shows you care about literacy. Someone You Should Know The Garth Family has come together to plant a living legacy for their family. They have pooled their resources to sponsor an area in the new Library. They are selecting a naming opportunity that reflects their love of community and children. By combining contributions large and small, they are ensuring the continued vitality of our community today and for generations to come.
