6 Dr Mihael Varner, Perussionist and Eduator Dr Mihael Varner has een Diretor of Perussion at the University of Texas at Arlington for the past 5 years He holds a Bahelor of Musi Eduation from Bowling Green State University, a Master s in Performane from The University of Mihigan, and a Dotorate in Performane from The University of North Texas Varner released his latest CD in 201 featuring his own ompositions With a long history as an eduator and liniian, he has een invited to give presentations throughout the United States, Japan and Europe fousing on developing musial expression In reent past years he has presented y invitation at the European Musi Eduators Convention held in Frankfurt, Germany, and Musi Eduators National Conventions as well as State Musi Eduation Conventions for Connetiut, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Kansas, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia and Minnesota He draws from 0 years experiene as a performer presenting repertoire from every musial style inluding Classial, Contemporary, Jazz, and World eat He rings to eah style of musi an unequalled sensitivity and exuerane Dotor Varner reently presented a series of leture/reital tours throughout Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma Dr Varner's performanes inluded presentations on Japanese marima ompositions, and a demonstration of the development of solo marima literature in the late 20th entury Exerpts from Dr Varner's tour performanes an e viewed and listened to y podast at the Vi Firth Wesite He has performed hamer musi and studio work in the Dallas/Ft Worth area inluding appearanes with the Fort Worth Symphony Orhestra During his time in Mihigan he was prinipal perussionist with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orhestra and Prinipal Timpanist with the Kalamazoo Chamer Orhestra Dr Varner has een a memer of the UTArlington Honors ollege faulty sine 1996 As the only musi faulty memer to e an honors ollege professor he was hosen as honor faulty memer of the year for teahing exellene in 200, the first year the Honors College named a reipient He ontinues to e ative nationally in the field of marhing perussion adudiating and presenting linis Under his guidane the UT Arlington drum line has een nationally reognized performing at numerous marhing exhiitions inluding the 1982, 1988, 199 and 2000, 200, and 2008 Perussive Arts Soieties International ompetitions He has worked with renowned drum and ugle orps, inluding the DCI hampion Chiago Cavaliers and the Toledo Glassmen Dr Varner ontinues his interest in omposition y aepting frequent ommission from university and high shools aross the United States He pulishes many of his own ompositions and has also released works through Southern Musi, Studio Four, and Permus Puliations Varner s interest in world musi led to a saatial in Nigeria and Study-Aroad lasses to Ghana His artile Skin That Speaks was pulished in the 201 Perussive Notes Journal In 2009 he reeived a Faulty Development Leave Grant to aept an invitation from Oafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria to work with their faulty and students He maintains an Artist relationship with Remo Heads and World Instruments, Vi Firth, Yamaha, and Saian ymals
