7 Overview Precutions On Sfety Operte the unit only with power source s specified in the Specifictions section. A nmeplte indicting operting voltge, power consumption, etc., is locted on the rer pnel. Should ny solid object or liquid fll into the cbinet, unplug the unit nd hve it checked by qulified personnel before operting it ny further. Do not drop or plce hevy objects on the power cord. If the power cord is dmged, turn off the power immeditely. It is dngerous to use the unit with dmged power cord. Unplug the unit from the wll outlet if it is not to be used for severl dys or more. Disconnect the power cord from the AC outlet by grsping the plug, not by pulling the cord. The socket-outlet shll be instlled ner the equipment nd shll be esily ccessible. On Instlltion Allow dequte ir circultion to prevent internl het build-up. Do not plce the unit on surfces (rugs, blnkets, etc.) or ner mterils (curtins, drperies) tht my block the ventiltion holes. Do not instll the unit in loction ner het sources such s rditors or ir ducts, or in plce subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust, mechnicl vibrtion or shock. Hndling the LCD Screen The LCD pnel fitted to this unit is mnufctured with high precision technology, giving functioning pixel rtio of t lest 99.99%. Thus very smll proportion Chpter1 of pixels my be stuck, either lwys off (blck), lwys on (red, green, or blue), or flshing. In ddition, over long period of use, becuse of the physicl chrcteristics of the liquid crystl disply, such stuck pixels my pper spontneously. These problems re not mlfunction. Do not leve the LCD screen fcing the sun s it cn dmge the LCD screen. Tke cre when you plce the unit by window. Do not push or scrtch the LCD monitor s screen. Do not plce hevy object on the LCD monitor s screen. This my cuse the screen to lose uniformity. If the unit is used in cold plce, horizontl lines or residul imge my pper on the screen. This is not mlfunction. When the monitor becomes wrm, the screen returns to norml. If fixed picture such s frme of divided picture or time code, or still picture is displyed for long time, n imge my remin on the screen nd be superimposed s ghosting imge. The screen nd the cbinet become wrm during opertion. This is not mlfunction. With Protection Plte Instlled The protection plte is instlled on the monitor to protect the LCD pnel t the fctory. When viewed from n oblique ngle, the picture with the protection plte instlled my differ in color from tht without the protection plte. With the protection plte instlled, there my be more reflection of light thn without. As the internl het of the monitor increses when the protection plte is instlled, the fn strts to run erlier thn when the protection plte is not instlled. 8 Chpter 1 Overview On clening the monitor screen The monitor screen surfce is especilly treted to reduce reflection of light. As incorrect mintennce my impir the performnce of the monitor, tke cre with respect to the following: Wipe the screen gently with soft cloth such s clening cloth or glss clening cloth. If you wipe the screen using too much force, the screen surfce my lose uniformity or the LCD pnel my mlfunction. Never use tissue s it my scr the surfce of the screen. Stubborn stins my be removed with soft cloth such s clening cloth or glss clening cloth lightly dmpened with wter. Never use solvent such s lcohol, benzene or thinner, or cid, lkline or brsive detergent, or chemicl clening cloth, s they will dmge the screen surfce. On clening the cbinet Clen the cbinet gently with soft dry cloth. Stubborn stins my be removed with cloth lightly dmpened with mild detergent solution, followed by wiping with soft dry cloth. Use of lcohol, benzene, thinner or insecticide my dmge the finish of the cbinet or remove the indictions on the cbinet. Do not use these chemicls. If you rub on the cbinet with stined cloth, the cbinet my be scrtched. If the cbinet is in contct with rubber or vinyl resin product for long period of time, the finish of the cbinet my deteriorte or the coting my come off. On Repcking Do not throw wy the crton nd pcking mterils. They mke n idel continer which to trnsport the unit. On Rck Mounting When the monitor is mounted on rck, the temperture round the monitor my rise due to het generted from other equipment nd reduced ir circultion, cusing dmge to the monitor. To prevent this, keep the spce round the monitor (1U or more spce bove nd below the monitor), nd instll ventiltion fn or tke other effective countermesures so tht the temperture round the monitor is within the specified rnge: operting temperture rnge of 0 to 35 C (32 to 95 F). 10 Chpter 1 Overview Fetures The PVM-L1700 is 17-inch LCD Video Monitor. This is suitble for television sttions or video production houses, where precise imge reproduction is required. The PVM-L1700 fetures flt pnel nd TRIMASTER*, which is new technology developed for three elements, ccurte color reproduction, precision imging nd qulity picture consistency, tht re in demnd for professionl use. TRIMASTER decreses the viewing difference tht occurs due to the individulity of ech pnel. Also, the PVM-L1700 relizes the high picture qulity nd high-trust by the color mngement system with its wide color gmut device, high-resolution/precise grdtion disply, nimtion improvement technology nd signl processing of high ccurcy/clibrtion/feedbck system. * TRIMASTER is trdemrk of Sony Corportion. 17-inch LCD pnel developed for the PVM- L1700 The 17-inch (16.52 inch) LCD pnel ws developed for the PVM-L1700 nd supports the full HD signl. It offers 10-bit driver, high-speed response, high resolution nd high color grdtion. 12-bit precision disply engine for professionl use The pnel is equipped with unique signl process engine developed for the professionl use monitor. This engine incorportes 12-bit output ccurcy t ech process, nd provides high-qulity I/P conversion lgorithm, scling processing, pnel driving nd highly ccurte color mngement system. Multi color spce A color mngement system which uses the unique 3D LUT (Look Up Tble) reproduces the color spce tht complies with the brodcst stndrd ITU-R T.709, EU nd SMPTE-C ccurtely. High-qulity I/P conversion processing A high-qulity picture ner the originl one, in which jgged lines nd conversion errors re decresed by detecting the feture of the picture inside the subdivided block nd processing properly, is reproduced. The signl dely is decresed by judging the nimtion or still picture from the pst video signl. Interlce disply mode The interlce signl is displyed s the interlce picture by inserting the blck line without I/P conversion processing. A picture fithful to the originl signl nd with the sme feel s CRT is gined. For setting the disply, see Selecting Disply Mode on pge 81. lck frme insertion disply mode Motion blur cused by the holding-type disply of the LCD is decresed by inserting the blck frme between the picture frmes in double frme rte (100/120Hz) opertion of the LCD pnel. Avilble to multi signl formt The monitor supports vrious input signls such s /50i to /50P, 60P nd vrible computer signls up to A DVI-D (HDCP correspondence), HDMI* (HDCP correspondence) nd four option slots re equipped s the interfce nd the monitor supports HD-SDI, Dul-link HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, SD-SDI, RG, YPbPr, Y/C nd composite signl input. * HDMI, the HDMI logo nd High-Definition Multimedi Interfce re trdemrks or registered trdemrks of HDMI Licensing LLC. HD frme cpture function The frme of the 3G/HD-SDI input signl is cptured nd sved s picture file in the Memory Stick. This is used to confirm the color tone nd picture ngle of the current scene nd recorded scene by using the multi disply (Picture&Picture) function. * As the frme of the input signl is cptured, the dt nd mrker set by the monitor is not reflected. For the opertion, see Cpturing the Picture of the HD Signl (HD Frme Cpture) on pge 87. Multi disply function Two kinds of input signls re output on the monitor. Side by Side mode is useful for djusting the color or compring two pictures. For the opertion, see Displying Two Signls on One Screen (Picture&Picture) on pge 84. Pixel zoom function As prt of the picture is mgnified up to 8 times without scling processing, this is convenient for confirming minute prt of the signl. For the opertion, see Mgnifying the Picture (Pixel Zoom) on pge 85. Sfe re mrker nd spect mrker functions The monitor is equipped with two re mrkers nd center mrker s the sfe re mrker nd spect mrker for confirming the picture ngle. 10 Fetures

Scn selection/ntive scn disply function You cn select from under scn ( 3%), norml scn (0%) nd over scn (msk of the 5% over scn portion in the norml scn) for the picture disply. The monitor is equipped with ntive scn disply function which mps the pixel of the signl to the pnel in one-to-one mode. You cn select the mode from 1, 2 or Aspect Correction to disply signl in ntive mode. An SD signl of non-squre pixels (the number of H pixels of the signl system is 720 or 1440) or SD signl of DVI video/hdmi video is displyed correctly by scling processing of doubling for the V direction nd correct spect rtio for the H direction, nd the picture is lso optimized nd displyed by modifying the perture coefficient vlue, filter coefficient vlue, etc. in Aspect Correction mode. For the opertion, see Selecting the Ntive Scn/Scn Mode on pge 83. lck detil mode disply function You cn reduce to dull blck color by bcklight leking nd precisely ssess ny prts with low color grdtion. You cn decrese the blck level up to 40% of the norml disply (100 cd/m 2 t 100% signl). The prts with high color grdtion (higher thn 75 IRE) re clipped by the dynmic rnge of the circuit, but zebr pttern (selectble) is displyed in the clipped portions. For the opertion, see Displying the Picture in lck Detil Mode on pge 86. Aspect selectble function A squeezed nd recorded signl is displyed with the correct ngle. You cn select from 4:3 nd 16:9 spect modes. Remote control function (Ethernet control) The controller controls up to 32 monitors by the Ethernet (10ASE-T/100ASE-TX) connection. Up to four controllers re connected to one monitor in single mode. You cn control individul monitors or monitor groups simply by entering the monitor ID number or group ID number. You cn lso execute the sme opertion on ll connected monitors, or put ll connected monitors into the sme setup nd djustment stte. Closed cption disply function EIA/CEA-608 or EIA/CEA-708 stndrd closed cption signls superimposed on the SDI signls re displyed by instlling the optionl input dptor (KM-244CC). Audio level meter/time code disply function Audio level of the embedded udio nd time code signls superimposed on the SDI signls re displyed by instlling the optionl input dptor (KM-250TG). 3D signl nlyzing function Left (L) nd right (R) 3D video signls cn be displyed in checkerbord pttern on the sme screen, or they cn be switched lterntely by instlling the optionl input dptor (KM-250TG with seril number or higher). Vrible picture djustment functions Auto chrom, phse nd mtrix djustment function re equipped. The white blnce is utomticlly djusted by using commercilly vilble probe (Konic Minolt CA-210, DK-Technologies PM5639/06, X-Rite Eye-One Pro). Other fetures The color temperture is selectble from D65, D93 nd User. uilt-in test pttern for 100% white signl, 20% gry signl, 0% blck signl, PLUGE (Picture Line Up Genertion Equipment) signl, color-br signl, 5 step gry scle signl nd rmp signl. Chrom Up function tht increses the chrom setting by 12 d. lue only function nd RG cut off function to monitor signl noise. A prllel remote of the contct point control connector is equipped. 12 Chpter 1 Overview Options For externl control KM-16R Monitor Control Unit The KM-16R is controller of the PVM-L1700 nd you cn control multiple monitors from one controller. In this mnul, the KM-16R is referred to s the controller. For instlltion KM-39H Controller Attchment Stnd Used to join KM-16R nd the PVM-L1700. SMF-700 Monitor Interfce Cble Used to connect the PVM-L1700 to the KM-16R. Input dptors The input connector pnel is composed by instlling the optionl input dptor into the input option slot on the rer pnel of the monitor. Up to four dptors cn be instlled to the monitor. The input signl type for ech connector of the dptor is set with the Input Configurtion menu, in ccordnce with the configurtion of the connector pnel. When instlling the dptor, be sure to perform the necessry input signl setup with the Input Configurtion menu. If the setup is not performed, the dptors my not function correctly. For informtion bout the Input Configurtion menu, see pge 49. For detils of ech input dptor, refer to the operting instructions of ech model. KM-220D SDI 4:2:2 Input Adptor Includes decoder for seril digitl signls (525/625 component). Input/output connectors for two seril digitl chnnels nd output connector for one monitor chnnel re equipped. The signl from the MONITOR OUT connector of the KM-220D does not stisfy the ON-LINE signl specifictions. KM-227W NTSC/PAL Input Adptor Includes decoder for NTSC/PAL/PAL-M/SECAM signls. Input/output connectors for ech one composite signl chnnel nd Y/C signl chnnel re equipped. KM-229X Anlog Component Input Adptor Includes decoder for nlog component signls nd nlog RG signls. Input connector for one chnnel is equipped. KM-243HS HD/D1-SDI Input Adptor Includes decoder for seril digitl component signls. Input/output connectors for two seril digitl chnnels nd output connector for one monitor chnnel re equipped. The signl from the MONITOR OUT connector of the KM-243HS does not stisfy the ON-LINE signl specifictions. KM-244CC HD/SD-SDI Closed Cption Adptor Includes decoder for seril digitl component signls. EIA/CEA-608 or EIA/CEA-708 stndrd closed cption signls superimposed on the SDI signls re decoded nd displyed. Input/output connectors for two seril digitl chnnels nd output connector for one monitor chnnel re equipped. The signl from the MONITOR OUT connector of the KM-244CC does not stisfy the ON-LINE signl specifictions. KM-250TG 3G/HD/SD-SDI Input Adptor Includes decoder for seril digitl component signls. Time code nd udio level of the embedded udio signls superimposed on the SDI signls re displyed. Input/ output connectors for two seril digitl chnnels nd output connector for two monitor chnnels re equipped. The signl from the MONITOR OUT connector of the KM-250TG does not stisfy the ON-LINE signl specifictions. Cution When you instll the following input dptors to this equipment, use those with the seril numbers given below. KM-220D with seril number or higher KM-229X with seril number or higher KM-243HS with seril number or higher KM-250TG with seril number or higher KM-220D: This equipment my not meet the requirements of the electromgnetic interference stndrd if designted input dptors re not instlled. 12 Options

19 Preprtions Chpter2 Environments of the Instlltion Loction Illumintion environments The pprent color reproduction on the monitor is gretly ffected by mbient light or glre. The LCD device controls the brightness by moving LCD molecules with the bcklight lwys lit. For this reson, in drk plce, n LCD monitor screen shows very dim light leks from the blck imge. We recommend tht you djust the mbient light nd use in n environment tht does not degrde the reproduction of blck. Viewing ngle The idel viewing ngle is within 5 degrees (up/down/left/ right) off the center of the monitor screen when the opertor views the entire monitor screen. To connect the AC power cord 1 Plug the AC power cord into the AC IN connector on the rer pnel. Then, ttch the AC plug holder (supplied) to the AC power cord. Press the ON/OFF (power) switch on the rer pnel (ON) to turn on the power. When you turn on the monitor for the first time fter purchsing it, the Select Are screen is displyed. The monitor ID number, group ID number or ALL is displyed in the disply window. s When the monitor with no ssigned monitor ID number or group ID number is selected, the setting is not chnged nd the previous connection sttus is mintined. To perform stble color reproduction, turn on the power of the monitor, disply the white signl nd leve it in this stte for more thn 30 minutes. 1 1 Select the chnnel (CH1 to CH30) to be ssigned by pressing the numeric button of the controller. To ssign to chnnel number from 1 to 9, press the pproprite one-digit chnnel number on the numeric keypd. To ssign to chnnel number from 10 to 30, press the 0 button, then press the pproprite two-digit chnnel number. 2 Set the input signl for the selected chnnel in Input Configurtion menu (pge 49). The required setting is different due to the input signl or picture qulity to be displyed. For detils of the setting, see the Input Configurtion menu (pge 49). Setting the Disply Mode of the Picture Set the disply mode condition of the input signl to disply on the screen. The setting items re following. The dt of Preset1 to Preset5 is set to the chnnel in the Picture Preset menu (pge 51) of the Input Configurtion menu. Adjust the picture utomticlly with the uto chrom/ phse/mtrix function for every signl formt nd signl system to disply the composite signl or Y/C signl from the KM-227W, or nlog component signl or nlog RG signl from the KM-229X. If the picture is not djusted, the picture my not be displyed correctly. 2 Color Temperture (white blnce) djustment You cn djust the dt set to the chnnel in the Color Temp menu (pge 51) of the Input Configurtion menu.
