Digital TV Digital televisin (smetimes called DTV) is a newer methd f bradcasting TV signals that delivers higher quality audi and vide. Digital TV is bradcast in tw sets f frmats, SDTV and HDTV. NTSC NTSC (Natinal Televisin Standards Cmmittee) refers t the grup that first established the standards used fr cnventinal analg televisin bradcasts and TV equipment. ATSC ATSCC (Advanced Televisin Systems Cmmittee) is thee grup wh has been wrking t establish the standards frr digital televisin bradcasts and digital televisin equipment including bthh SDTV and HDTV. QAM QAM (Quadrature amplitude mdulatin) is a methd f mdulating digital signals n a cable televisin system in rder t transmit digital cablee TV channels. SDTVV SDTVV (Standard-Definitin TV) is a digital TV frmat that prvides a high quality picture at reslutins that can be displayed n standard TV sets (see mre n reslutins later in this chapter). HDTV HDTV (High-Definitin TV) is a digital TV frmat that prvides the highest quality picture at reslutins that can be displayed n HDTV- ready TV displays, HDTV Mnitrs and, cmputer mnitrs. 6 Intrductin Using either r bth caxial RF cnnectrs n the back f the Digital HDTV Tuner, yu can receive lcal televisin prgrams. T view cable TV prgramming, prgramming subscriptins are als required. What equipment is required t view HDTV prgramming? T view HDTV prgramming, an additin t yur r televisin set. yu will need an HDTV mnitr T receivee digital ver-the-air yu ll need either an indr r (OTA) televisin bradcasts, utdr antenna. T receivee analg and digital cable TV prgramming, yu ll need a cable TV cnnectinn (prvidedd by yur lcal cable TV service prvider). Reslutin and interlacing Tw f the elements that determinee the quality f a TV picture are reslutin and nterlacing. Reslutin Fr TV equipment and bradcasts, reslutin is defined by the number f hrizntal lines displayedd t make up each frame f a vide image. The mre lines f reslutin used t draw each frame f vide, the mre detailed and sharp the picture will be. Standard TV reslutin uses 480 hrizntal lines t make up each f vide. HDTV uses either 720 lines, r 1080 lines t make each vide frame. Interlacing When TVs display vide, they display a new vide frame at a rate that is faster than yur eye can see (frm 24 t 60 frames per secnd, depending n the TV and bradcast). Interlacing refers t whether each f thse frames cntainss all f the lines f vide fr each frame r every ther line. Interlaced signals take every ther line frame 2 frames f vide (each lasting 1/60 th f a secnd), and cmbine them int ne frame lasting 1/30 th f a secnd. In this way, interlacing tricks yur eye int thinking it is seeing twice the reslutin that is actually being displayed. In nn-interlaced vide, (referred t as prgressive scan vide), vide frames are displayed every 1/60 th f a secnd cntaining all f the lines ff vide infrmatin fr each frame. The specificatinss fr vide reslutins are usually stated by giving the number f hrizntal lines, fllwed by either the letter I, fr interlaced vide, r p fr prgressive scan (nn-interlaced) vide. Sme DVDs and nn- HDTV digital TV bradcasts use 480p. The ATSC specificatin fr HDTV bradcasts and equipment requires either 1080i r 720p. One f the enhanced features f is t allw scaling HD 1080i/720p vide up t 60Hz vide quality. The results, vide has mre fine pixels and vivid n many high-end TV display. Aspect rati means the shape f the screen as defined by the rati f the screen s width t its height. Fr analg TV and SDTV, the aspect rati is 4 units wide by 3 units high (usually written 4:3).. Installing Batteries: befre the remtee cntrl can be used, tw batteries (size AAA) need t be installed. First, pen battery cver frm the back f the remte. Installl 2x fresh batteries in the battery cmpartment. Next, snap the cver back nt the remte cntrl. 17 Pwer Up & Initial Setup Pwer Up and Setup After cnnecting PHDPHD VRX with prper input and utput surces surces, yu will need t pwer up the unit and run initial setup prcedures including an autmatic channel scan. This initial setup is required nly during the first time using the unit, r after activating the Reset All feature t set the unit back t its initial stage. T start: 1. Then within a few secnds the TV screen will be blank and PHD VRX frnt panel will shw a clck and red light, meaning that the unit has been turned ff t standby mde. Lcks: In the Lcks menu yu can use Ratings lcks (V-CHIP), (V Channel lcks and Change hange PIN after setting yur passwrd. USB Speed Check This is anther PHD VRX USB utility tl which checks the external USB access speed. The higher speed number, the better recrding recrding perfrmance is. Fr example, NTFS frmat USB device speed is usually abut 5MB/s, 5MB/s but ext2 frmat USB device speed can nrmally reach t 23~26MB/s. Therefre, fr simple recrding (ne channel at a time), yu can use either ext2 r NTFS frmat USB HDD. HDD. Hwever, t recrd tw channels annels frm tw tuners at the same time, yu may need ext2 frmat USB HDD nly. If yu select this ptin, the USB Speed Test screen will pp ut. Select the Test ptin and VRX will start perfrming perfrm a read/write functin functin t access yur external USB HDD. Timeshift Duratin VRX prvides a timeshift functin, which can instantly rewind, fast frward r pause live TV shws shws. Since timeshifting uses the external USB HDD as temprary temprar strage space, the timeshift buffer size (r duratin perid) has t be pre-set pre set in rder t reserve strage space frm USB HDD in advance. The timeshift imeshift duratin default setting is 5 minutes. This means that nce timeshift is enabled, yu can always rewind up t 5 minutes back.. When rewinding ing, the timeshift prgress bar will be displayed t indicate the current time line pint. Of curse, curse yu can set a different different timeshift duratin (frm 5, 30, 60, , t minutes) based n yur external HDD strage size. Use this ptin t select a different duratin. Once plugged, PHD VRX will prmptly detect and munt the USB device. Yu can then press QUICK remte buttn t verify USB device status frm the Quick Menu, r the USB device cnnecting screen will pp ut first if sme files are already in the USB HDD. In rder t create timeshift n live TV prgram, PHDPHD VRX will generate and stre a timeshift.mpg timeshift.mpg file le first t the external USB device. VRX als prvides several timeshift duratins duratins (5, 10, 20, 30, and 60 minutes) t chse frm. The timeshift duratin is like a time buffer. Within this duratin, yu can shift the prgram backward, frward r pause at any pint yu prefer. Yu can als chse the prper timeshift duratin based n yur external USB HDD size since larger timeshift duratins will generate bigger HDD strage space. The default duratin is 5 minutes. There are tw ways t adjust timeshift duratin. duratin. Press QUICK remte buttn t bring up the Quick Menu. In this menu, mve t the Timeshift Duratin ptin and then use navigatin keys LEFT and RIGHT t change the prper duratin time. Or, in the menu, select Recrd Timeshift Duratin. The secnd secnd USB device plugged in (assigned as usbb ) will be used as a general media player device. Make sure USB HDD is frmatted as either Linux ext-2 ext 2 r Windws NTFS frmat fr timeshifting. PHD VRX will prmptly detect and munt the USB device. Yu can then press QUICK remte buttn t verify USB device status frm Quick Menu, r the USB device cnnecting screen will pp ut first if sme files are already in the USB HDD. VRX can recrd TV shws n the first USB device plugged in (internal system assigns it as usba ). Secnd USB device plugged in (assigned as usbb ) will be used as a general media player device. Make sure USB HDD fr recrding is frmatted as either Linux ext-2 ext 2 r Windws NTFS frmat. D nt use USB HDD with FAT r FAT32 frmat. PHD prvides n n-screen screen frmat utility tl s yu can directly frmat yur HDD t Linux ext-2 ext 2 fr the best perfrmance. We recmmend using the USB HDD fr regular recrding fr reliability. Fr simple r ne time quick recrding, yu can cnsider using USB flash stick. T start recrding, recrding, PHD VRX prvides three (3x) different recrding methds in general: 1. Recrd Nw: Nw This his is the simplest recrding methd. Press REC the remte buttn, and the Recrd Optins menu will pp up. After highlighted the prgram title, then press REC remte buttn. The Recrd Optins screen will pp ut. It will indicate the current prgram name as well as the duratin f the shw. Use navigatin keys t scrll up and dwn t select the ptins fr this prgram schedule. Active:: Select this ptin t turn the schedule timer active and ready t recrd. Yu can als unselect it t reserve this schedule timer and re-activate re activate it later in the Upcming Recrding list. End Time:: Yu can als set this schedule t finish recrding later. These ptins are: On Time, 1 min+ (late), 2 min+, 3 min+, 4 min+, 5 min+, 1100 min+, 15 min+, 30 min+, and 60 min+ (late). Once yu select Dne and cnfirm, cnfirm, the schedule is set. The clr Type icn will be autmatically appended t the right side f prgram name. T quick search channel numbers r prgram titles, yu can use r key t scrll up and dwn page by page. Inactive prgram schedules will be displayed with grey clr Type icns. If the current schedule verlaps with the previus schedules, the Cnflict lict Schedule Manager screen will pp up. It will list all the verlapped schedules cnflicted with the current ne. The user have a chice t select Mdify ptin t de-activate de activate all the previus verlapped schedules, r cnfirm with Back ptin t g back the previus Recrd Recrd Optins screen and re rechange the settings. Or, the user can select Cancel ptin t cancel this schedule event cmpletely. Fr the cnvenience, cnvenience, the user can quickly view the last three recrded TV shws infrmatin by pressing blue remte key withut leaving this Upcming Recrding Recrding Schedules screen. Once pressed, the Recrding Histry Last 3 Recrdings Quick List sub-screen screen will pp-up pp up in the bttm area. Yu can press blue remte key again t clear ut this Recrding Histry screen r wait fr a time-ut time ut t ccur. Once yu set a schedule frm the Guide screen r manually, it is always gd t check back frm the Upcming Upcming Recrdings screen t cnfirm that yu have successfully set up a timer recrding schedule. It shws the current highlighted prgram gram vide in a smaller preview windw. On tp f this preview windw, it displays this TV prgram full file name. name Vide Time Line Screen appears n the lwer right prtin. This screen gives yu the duratin f the TV prgram selected, prgram vide file size, and the status fr the actin keys. Frm rm the preview windw, the user will be able t play, stp, pause, skip and fast frward/rewind vide by using these actin cntrl keys withut mving t full size vide screen. Mdify Recrded TV Prgram Titles:: User can rename the recrded files by highlighting the desired TV prgram title and pressing remte key. Keypad menu pps up in the middle f the screen.
