2 Click the "New Scre" buttn at the tp f the page t create a scre NOTEFLIGHT HELP: Then chse the initial instrument(s) fr the scre and press OK. Select bjects and measures by clicking r dragging. The prelude t ding anything with an bject in the scre is always t select it. Yu can select a nte, rest, barline r ther ntatins by clicking n it directly: Yu can als select a measure specific t a part by clicking in a blank space: And yu can select a sectin f the scre acrss all parts by clicking in the measure number bar abve the scre: Yu can als select time ranges by clicking and dragging hrizntally. Enter ntes with the muse Click next t the blinking cursr (if yu dn't see the cursr, click the place where yu want it t appear): By hlding the muse dwn after yu click and dragging frm side t side, yu can change the duratin f the new nte, making it lnger r shrter:

3 After entering a nte, click buttns in the Editing Palette t adjust it: Enter ntes with the keybard Use the letters A thrugh G, and the special keys [Space] and [Backspace]. After entering a nte, yu can adjust it: - + = add a flat, sharp r natural [ r ( makes a nte shrter ] r ) makes a nte lnger,. make ties and dts [Up] and [Dwn] adjust a nte's pitch. Add measures Mve the muse abve any measure and click ne f the (+) icns: Delete measures Mve the muse abve any measure and click the (-) icn: Mve ntes r measures frm side t side Select them, then drag them hrizntally and release them in the place yu want them t appear. Fr example: Use the Sharing panel Publish r share yur scre with ther Nteflight users and n the web. Scre Basics Und and Red All changes that yu make t the scre can be undne and redne, including changes t the set f selected bjects r measures. (Und/red f selectin changes is handy in cmplex edits since it can take sme wrk t select exactly the things yu want). The Edit > Und and Edit > Red menu cmmands perfrm these imprtant functins. When yu pull dwn the Edit menu, these menu items als shw the names f the actins that they will und r red if selected:

4 Up t 20 prir changes are maintained in the edit histry. The keybard shrtcuts [Ctrl/Cmmand]-Z and [Ctrl/Cmmand]-Y are als available fr these cmmands. Saving a scre The current scre may be saved using the File > Save cmmand, als accessed by the keybard shrtcut [Ctrl/Cmmand]-S. If there are n changes that need t be saved, this cmmand is disabled. Scres are saved autmatically when yu stp wrking fr a while, r after a predetermined time limit. If yu try t leave a page with unsaved wrk, Nteflight asks yu t cnfirm first, in rder t avid lsing yur changes. Adding and Editing Ntes with the Muse T add a nte with the muse, select the place where yu want the nte t appear and mve the muse cursr ver the area just t the right f the blinking insertin pint (the thin vertical line). As yu mve the muse up and dwn, a gray nte head appears under the muse pinter t shw where a nte will be placed if yu click: Clicking the muse buttn then adds the nte head t any nte r rest at that psitin. If any single nte r rest is already selected when the nte was added, the newly added nte takes n the time duratin f that selected bject. T cntrl the duratin f a new nte using the muse, hld the buttn dwn after entering it and drag t either side. The cursr will change and its hrizntal will start t cntrl the length f the new nte. Dragging t the left makes the nte shrter; dragging t the right makes it lnger: After yu add a nte, yu can als use the Editing Palette t adjust it: Dragging Ntes with the Muse At any pint, yu can drag ne r mre selected ntes vertically with the muse t change its pitch. Dragging mves all ntes ne staff line r space at a time (diatnic transpsitin). Yu can als drag ne r mre selected ntes frm side t side with the muse t change where they fall rhythmically within the bar. While yu are dragging, the cursr will change t a small nte and an range bar r gray utline will travel with the muse t shw where the selected ntes will be placed when the muse buttn is

5 released: Staff selectins Staff selectins are defined in terms f a time range rather than as a cllectin f separate bjects. A staff selectin's starting pint lies n sme nte within a bar, and ends n sme later nte within that bar r a subsequent ne. Additinally, staff selectins (as their name suggests) apply t sme set f selected staves, fr the duratin f their time range. Staff selectins are gd fr apply sme edit t all ntes that lie in a particular time range n sme set f staves, r erasing a time range in the scre. Cpying and pasting a staff selectin is the best way t cpy music frm ne staff (r set f staves) t anther. Yu can make staff selectins by clicking in the staff within any measure, away frm any ntes r ther bjects: Clicking in the staff and then dragging hrizntally selects a range f measures n that staff, rather than a single measure. T select an entire staff thrughut the whle scre, yu can als click the gray "staff marker" that appears t the left f the starting pint f each staff: Duble clicking in any staff als selects that entire staff. The Editing Palette Once selected, a nte, chrd r rest r ther ntatin can be manipulated with the editing palette. This palette is nly shwn when there are ne r mre bjects. Its cntents depend n what kind f bjects are selected. The palette mves arund t psitin itself near the first selected bject, but yu can mve it yurself t any lcatin yu like. The Basic Palette

6 When ne r mre ntes are selected, the palette has tw parts: the Basic Palette and a set f Advanced Palettes. Nrmally the Advanced palettes are clsed, and the Basic palette is shwn by itself: Editing actins available frm the Basic palette include: Sharps, flats and naturals Rhythm duratin changes Additin f lyrics, text, expressin/dynamics r chrd symbls Fermatas, augmentatin dts and ties Delete selected bjects Clicking n any f the tabs at the bttm f the Basic palette allws yu t chse an Advanced palette t wrk with. We'll describe these Advanced palettes ne at a time. Advanced Palette: Symbls Select ntes r chrds prir t clicking the actins n this palette, which include: These buttns add an articulatin symbl t the selected ntes including accents, bwing and pen/clsed. The Slash symbl cnverts the selectin t use a slash ntehead and advances the nte entry cursr. The / key is a shrtcut fr this actin. The Segn symbl adds a segn symbl t the musical frm at the current selectin. The Cda symbl adds a cda symbl t the musical frm at the current selectin. The Repeat Ending symbl adds a repeat ending t the musical frm at the current selectin. Yu can dubleclick the number t edit it. Multiple numbers separated by cmmas are allwed.

7 This buttn adds system text at the current selectin. System text is like regular text, except that it is assciated with all parts in a measure, and it always appears abve the tpmst part in the scre. The [Shift]- T key is a shrtcut fr this actin. This buttn tggles the currently selected nte between a plain nte and a duble-dtted nte (ne and threequarters f the length that the nte wuld have withut the duble-dt). Advanced Palette: Nte Styles This buttn creates a caesura n the selected nte, used t dente a substantial pause in the music. This buttn creates a breath mark n the selected nte, used t dente a pause where the perfrmer draws breath r pauses briefly. This buttn adds, mdifies r remves an arpeggi n the currently selected chrd. Arpeggis may be ntated withut an arrw (in which case they are played upwards) r with an arrw ging up r dwn. Nteflight des nt currently supprt crss-staff arpeggis in keybard music. These buttns add/remve a mrdent r inverted mrdent. Nteflight des nt play mrdents, but they are cmmnly perfrmed as a shrt tw-nte trill abve r belw the main nte respectively. These buttns add, mdify r remve a turn r inverted turn. Clicking nce adds a regular turn, while clicking again cnverts it int a delayed turn that is perfrmed a shrt time interval int the nte. Clicking a third time remves the turn. Nteflight des nt play these rnaments. Select ntes r rests prir t clicking the actins n palette, which include: Advanced Palette: Lines A full range f nte shapes, including sme withut stems. The Cue icn allws yu t tggle the size f ntes r rests t a smaller size used fr parts that indicate what sme ther instrument is playing, called a "cue". The Stems Up and Stems Dwn icns allw yu t tggle the directin f nte stems t frce them t always g up r always g dwn, instead f being autmatically psitined by Nteflight.

8 Actins available frm this palette affect a range f music in a staff, usually mre than a single nte. Select the range f music yu want t affect by dragging, selecting measures, r shift-clicking befre chsing frm the fllwing: Repeating Music Hairpin dynamics fr crescend and diminuend Slurs Trills Multiple Measure Rests Lines representing ranges f music fr crescend (cresc.), diminuend (dim.), accelerand (accel.), ritardand (rit.) and let vibrate (l.v.) A wavy line indicating vibrat. Lines that cause the music t be sunded ne ctave lwer (8vb) r higher (8va) than written. Pedal ntatin permitting all ntes t ring indefinitely. General purpse dashed r slid lines. General purpse brackets. A special case f using Cpy and Paste is when a sectin f music is t be repeated, pssibly with sme mdificatin. Repeated music is very cmmn, ranging frm a single nte t a meldic theme t entire sectins f the scre. T make this peratin easier, there is a special Edit > Repeat cmmand (shrtcut key R) which duplicates the selectin and immediately pastes a cpy f the selectin after itself, withut affecting the cntents f the clipbard. Transpsing Music T change the key f ne r mre ntes in yur scre, select sme music and use ne f the entries n the Edit > Transpse menu, which ffers a number f ptins: Up Scale Step and Dwn Scale Step (shrtcuts: Up and Dwn). Mve the selected ntes up r dwn by ne staff psitin, using the current key signature. This type f transpsitin is mst useful fr music with n accidentals. Up Half Step and Dwn Half Step (shrtcuts: [Shift]-Up and [Shift]-Dwn). Transpse the selected ntes up r dwn by a chrmatic step adding sharps r flats as needed. Sharps are preferred when transpsing up, flats when transpsing dwn. If yu dn't get the accidental yu want, transpse ne extra half-step and then cme back in the ppsite directin. Up Octave and Dwn Octave (shrtcuts: [Ctrl]-Up and [Ctrl]-Dwn). Transpse the selected ntes up r dwn ne ctave. Up Interval and Dwn Interval. Transpse the selected ntes up r dwn by the interval that yu chse. This is the nly transpsitin cmmand which will affect the key f selected chrd symbls. The Edit > Enharmnic Change cmmand will "flip" the accidentals f all selected ntes, changing sharps t flats and vice versa, withut changing the pitch f the ntes. It is very useful when crrecting ntes imprted frm MIDI.

9 Adding Measures Yu can add a new measure t the scre by selecting a measure and clicking ne f the "+" icns that appears t the left r right f its measure marker; this adds a new measure befre r after the selected measure respectively: Anther way t add measures is t make a scre selectin, use the Cut r Cpy cmmand, and then use Paste t insert the scre selectin after the measure cntaining the current selectin. Yet anther way t add measures is t make a scre selectin and use the Repeat cmmand t duplicate it. The new cpy is placed directly after the riginal. Remving r Clearing Measures T delete ne r mre measures frm the scre, create a scre selectin by clicking a numbered measure marker, then Shift-click elsewhere in the scre t extend the selectin t mre measures if needed. Then press the [Delete] key, r use the Edit > Delete menu item. T clear ut the cntents f a measure withut remving it frm the scre, create a staff selectin by clicking in the staff area f a measure and using Shift-click in anther staff area t extend the selectin if desired. Then press the [Delete] key, r use the Edit > Delete menu item. Key Signatures, Time Signatures and Clefs Tutrial Vide Changing Key Signatures T change an existing key signature, click it. T apply a key signature t the entire scre, use the Staff > Change Key Signature... cmmand. (If yu nly want t affect a range f measures, select thse measures first.) A dialg allws yu t specify the new key signature in terms f sharps r flats t apply t the selected range, and t als say

10 what scale yu are using: The labels under each chice give the name f the key fr the scale that is selected, which by default is Majr. Change the scale t anther chice such as Minr r Lydian and the labels will change accrdingly. There is ne special buttn labeled?, which means a key signature with n accidentals and n specified key. This key signature is cnsidered atnal, and will have n accidentals even in a transpsed scre. T change a key signature and all the bars fllwing it up t the next key change, r the end f the scre, simply click the key signature t edit it. Changing Time Signatures T change an existing time signature, click it. T apply a time signature t the entire scre, use the Staff > Change Time Signature... menu cmmand. (If yu nly want t affect a range f measures, select thse measures first). A dialg then appears which allws yu t specify the new meter t apply t the selected range: Clicking the cmmn time r cut time symbl buttns n the right allws yu t specify these symbls t be used fr the time signature instead f the nrmal number fractin frm. When selected, these autmatically frce time signatures f 4/4 and 2/2 respectively. There are three mdes fr time signature changes:

11 Nrmal (the default): the time signature in the selected measures is changed t the specified number and type f beat, and the visible time signature is adjusted t reflect the change. Pickup: a single pickup bar is created with the specified number and type f beats, and cntains the prtin f the selected music immediately preceding the last barline in the selectin. The visible time signature is nt adjusted. Hidden: the time signature in the selected measures is changed t the specified number and type f beat, but the visible time signature is nt changed. When yu change the time signature f a range f measures using the Nrmal r Hidden mdes, n music is lst. The existing ntes in the selected range f the scre are rebarred t fit the new time signature's bar lines. As a result, yu may wind up with a larger r smaller number f bars than yu had befre yu made the change. Pickup Bars (anacruses) and Irregular Measures There are a number f situatins in which measures d nt have as many beats as the current time signature implies. The mst cmmn case is a pickup bar r anacrusis in which the music starts in the middle f a bar. T create such a feature in Nteflight, use the Staff > Change Time Signature... cmmand t change the time signature f the bar t the actual number f beats that yu want t appear in the bar, and select the buttn labeled Pickup. This causes the measure t cntain the desired number f beats, but leaves the ntated time signature as it was befre. Let's lk at these steps in a little mre detail. First, select the measure that yu want t turn int a pickup measure: Next, change the time signature using Pickup mde. Here, we select a time signature f 1/4 because we want a pickup measure cnsisting f a single quarter nte:

12 The result is a pickup measure with a single beat f music, but which preserves the verall 3/4 time signature f the piece: Changing Clefs T apply a clef t a range f measures, a prtin f sme staff, r even a single nte, make the apprpriate selectin and use the Staff > Change Clef... cmmand. A dialg is ffered allwing selectin f the clef t be applied t the range: T change the clef fr an entire staff within the scre, click that staff's clef at the start f any system. T change the clef fr a specific sequence f music beginning with an existing clef change and cntinuing up t the next clef change, click the clef change ntatin at the start f that sequence. Clef changes may be cut, cpied, pasted and deleted. T cut, cpy r delete a clef change, first select the surrunding material (a clef by itself cannt be selected). When pasting, the Scre Editr makes the apprpriate changes, inserting clef changes as needed t preserve the crrespndence f the music and the ntatin.
