2 PROGRAM NOTE Composed or the Boston Pops Brass, American Dances y Roert W. Smith is a multi-movement ork ased on American popular dances and music. The ork as premiered as part o the orchestra s summer season at Tangleood in the Berkshires o Western Massachusetts. This movement, entitled Square, is ased on the olk, country and luegrass music o the Appalachian Mountains and the American West. Rich in tradition, Square is a celeration o American olk music and dance or the rass and. NOTES TO CONDUCTOR AND BRASS BAND Please note the tempo at 102 eats per minute. In order to stay stylistically accurate, please keep the tempo controlled and not too ast. The ensemle must stay relaxed and light not alloing the tempo to ecome rantic. The trumpet section ill e the est gauge o the inal perormance tempo ased upon the rhythmic density o their parts.
