This dcument represents the minimum acceptable standards fr audi visual system design and installatin. Fr wrks where Deakin University eslutins d nt prvide designs, all wrks described in cnnectin with the design and dcumentatin f audi visual services shall be the respnsibility f the specialist audi visual cntractr and/r cnsultant appinted t undertake the prject. Similarly, unless specifically nted therwise within this dcument, all wrks described in cnnectin with the actual prvisining f audi visual systems (e.g. implementatin) shall be the respnsibility f the specialist audi visual cntractr and/r cnsultant appinted t undertake the prject. Other stakehlders respnsible fr specifically identified aspects f prject delivery include: Deakin University eslutins Audi Visual & Netwrk Services (DeS) Deakin University Facilities Services Divisin (FSD) Head cntractr and assciated trades sub-cntractrs (e.g. cmmunicatins, electrical, security and heating, ventilatin and air cnditining) This standards dcument incrprates bth technical and peratinal assertins which are based n develped criteria and shall be adhered unless an exemptin is prvided in writing frm the DeS AV and Netwrks Unit Leader. Deakin University has a strng cmmitment t sustainable design initiatives, and these standards will be cntinually reviewed t ensure new pprtunities in this field are incrprated as deemed apprpriate. Influences upn the current versin f these standards include mtin sensing equipment t facilitate the pwer dwn f audi visual systems in respnse t lack f rm utilisatin, and the selectin f lw energy cnsumptin display panel technlgies. Where custmer equipment is being interfaced int an installatin, manufacturer s specificatins shall be adhered t therwise installatin practices shall fllw this standard, prvided that these practices d nt breach ccupatinal health and safety (OH&S) requirements. This dcument has been cmpiled using drawings which may be updated peridically. Where there may be sme dubt as t the interpretatin f an instructin, it is the respnsibility f the cnsultant r any agent r cntractr assciated with the cnsultant t clarify the situatin with Infrmatin Technlgy Services Divisin befre wrk cmmences. 1.2 Plicy This standard applies t all audi visual systems thrughut Deakin University and assciated lcatins managed by Deakin eslutins. 1.3 Standard Dcument Access All Deakin University DeS staff and cntracted persnnel are prvided access t this dcument. 16 3 Audi visual design principles Deakin University s cre principles fr all audi visual design and installatin are: Safety Healthy wrkplace with n OH&S hazards. Standards cmpliance Cnfrmance t all relevant regulatry, internatinal and industry standards as well as Deakin standards, including in particular: Mandatry BCA and DDA requirements. Flexibility Deakin standards and resulting standard designs t be flexible s as t meet the diverse needs f the University s varied business requirements. Cnsistency and familiarity Unifrmity f functin and user interface acrss Deakin and where pssible externally (e.g. by adpting cmmn supplied technlgies unmdified) t imprve efficiency and ease-f-use as staff and students mve arund the University, and as they enter frm ther institutins, and t minimize training, prductivity and pprtunity csts. Ease-f-use A single familiar intuitive user interface device t cver all functins; subject t frmal usability testing; all cntrls c-lcated in the ne place and f the same frmat; n handheld remte cntrllers; n multiplicity f (in particular handheld) cntrllers fr different cmpnents; n cntrls scattered arund in different parts f the rm; in particular a user shall never need t g t anther rm t set a rm feature (imprtant fr splittable/jinable rms). User driven design & functin based specificatin Functinal requirements are defined in frmal Standards apprved s as t meet the business needs f the University (refer ICT Vlume 2.1 Audi Visual Rm Standards and ther standards and dcuments referenced frm Vlume 2.1) while layers f cnsequential technical and implementatin details are specified in subsidiary Standards and their assciated technical Resurces available at Fr example: nt functinality that: must be inferred (reverse-engineered) frm a parts list nr driven by lw-level technical issues, such as a specific cabling system cabling is a means t an end nt an end in itself. Ttal slutin quality includes venue Standards and implementatin d nt fcus slely n the AV technlgies in the space but als ensure a hlistic, quality, and usable result cnsidering all aspects f the space, fr example including interir design and general amenity. High audi and vide image quality Includes HD, digital, wide-screen and stere requirements. Deakin eslutins Page 16 f 63 Versin:

Simplicity Avid cmplexity in all things s as t reduce design cst, system cst, supprt cst, training cst, dcumentatin cst, while imprving reliability, perfrmance, fault rates and repair times. Including preference fr: Single-bx slutins Fewer cmpnents are better, e.g. an all-in-ne Audi/Vide switcher/cntrller (e.g. AMX DVX/DGX family) that reduces the bx cunt, where multiple devices wuld therwise be required. Out-f-the-bx slutins Cmplete slutins delivered as supplied by single supplier, with n r minimal 3 rd party accessries (e.g. Cisc C20). Similarly preference fr factry manufactured cables and leads wherever practicable, instead f hand-made cables n-site. Get mre value ut f the cmpnents Fr example: Make use f Cisc cdec s inbuilt AEC, visin switching and visin cmpsitr functins rather than replicating this functinality by intrducing unnecessary 3 rd party bxes; Use the ne camera fr multiple functins (fr example videcnference, lecture capture and remte supprt). Integrate and custmize nly t the extent necessary While cmplex rms (AV6-AV9) require integratin, thers d nt (AV1-AV4), r nly require minimal integratin (AV3-AV5). In all cases ways t minimize integratin and custmizatin shall be sught. Fit-fr-purpse and Value-fr-mney Slutins are fit-fr-purpse, neither gld-plated nr prehistric, and f a cnsistent quality level acrss the whle University. TCO Reduced Ttal Cst f Ownership thrugh all these design principles including having regard t: Scalability Adaptability Supprtability Maintainability Energy efficiency and sustainability Standard designs Each standard rm type (AVxx) and sub-type (AVxx-y) has an exact detailed design which shall always be implemented exactly as detailed. Please refer t the system designs which are published at As per the flexibility principle: Unusual physical layuts These standard designs can be installed as is equally int cnventinal and unusual physical cnfiguratins; Adaptatins These standard designs can be adapted fr nn-standard applicatins, generally by remving cmpnents frm the standard design. Each standard design nminates specific ptinal cmpnents that can be remved. In sme cases, adaptatins can be by substitutin r additin f cmpnents t the standard design. Deakin eslutins Page 17 f 63 Versin:

Hybridizatin In sme cases nn-standard applicatins can be satisfied by cmbining multiple instances f a standard design, r by cmbining aspects f multiple standard designs. Examples are given in the text. Custm slutins Custm slutins shall always be based n the nearest standard rm sub-type and nearest standard detailed design. The custm slutin shall be expressed slely in terms f exactly enumerated differences with respect t the nearest standard design, and nt as a cmplete recital frm scratch discnnected frm a standard slutin. Nn-standard slutins t be apprved n a case-by-case basis All nn-standard slutins must be apprved by the Des AV and Netwrk Services Manager strictly n a case-by-case basis, befre either prcurement r wrk cmmences, and by using the apprved frm ICT Resurce Custm Slutin Apprval and Waiver Frm. The apprved frm is published at Reduced standard parts-list Fllwing careful and frmal prduct evaluatin, the University selects a reduced set f suppliers (usually ne) fr each range f prducts, and selects a reduced sub-set f cmpnents frm each f thse suppliers ranges as the Deakin standard cmpnents. N cmpnent substitutin N cmpnent substitutin withut apprval f the DeS AV and Netwrk Manager. The list f apprved hardware is amended frm time t time. Fr the currently apprved hardware, please refer t Up-t-date cmpnents must always be emplyed. Quantitative nt qualitative / ratinal nt pininated Precise, testable, quantitative specificatins in all regards wherever pssible, nt vague mtherhd statements. Avidance f wrds like satisfactry. Ratinal, bjective decisin making. This quantitative apprach parallels the current migratin frm best-effrt analg t the deterministic perfrmance f digital systems. Within manufacturers specificatins / nt by experiment Design cnstrained fr peratin within manufacturers published Specificatins in all regards, and nt reliant n smething that has been bserved t apparently wrk by lcal experiment. Otherwise n recurse t suppliers when things dn t wrk r stp wrking (including as a result f sftware upgrade) r nt wrking cnsistently, reliably, predictably r t required perfrmance quality levels. Fr example: HDBaseT alng with 10GbaseT require mre than 250 MHz f bandwidth, therefre the minimum cable grade that shall be used is Cat6A. Similarly, shielded cable shall be used if a manufacturer recmmends it. Cabling hrses-fr curses Cabling is a majr cst cmpnent and therefre ptimizatin f physical design is imprtant. This is cvered in Sectin 4 belw, including cnsideratin f: in-rm vs centralized AV as apprpriate Deakin eslutins Page 18 f 63 Versin:

Remte management simple and effective Centralized remte mnitring, cntrl, adjustment, upgrade, fault diagnsis and management (e.g. reprting and statistics) capabilities t be prvided fr all systems. Ethernet management and cntrl All devices that have any level f Ethernet mnitring, cntrl r management capability shall be cnnected t the University s (wired) Ethernet netwrk, even if current AMX cntrl is via sme ther frm (e.g. RS-232) f cmmunicatins. Future-prfed All standards, designs, prduct chices, implementatins and installatins shall be futureprfed t the extent practicable. Fr example: refer Ethernet management abve; refer VGA phase-ut belw; at time f installatin, install additinal cables (N+1) t cater fr changed usage. Cyclic refresh Slutins shall be prvided in the cntext f frmal cntinuus cyclic technlgy refresh arrangements. In this regard, mst AV technlgies are expected t have a service life f at least 6 years, thus an apprximate 6~7 year refresh cycle shuld be accmmdated. Of particular nte in this regard during the current refresh cycle perid: Analg vide. VGA and ther related analg vide technlgies (DVI-A, Cmpnent, YC/S-Vide, Cmpsite) have reached end f serviceable life. As f 1 Jan 2018 analg vide (including VGA) shall nt be installed in new installatins. As f 1 Jan 2019 analg vide (including VGA) shall be retrspectively remved frm existing installatins. Deakin eslutins Page 19 f 63 Versin:

4 Physical design cnstraints and ptimizatin A majr cst cmpnent in a typical AV deplyment is the installatin csts, including the csts f cabling and small cmpnents, in particular cable transceivers and adaptrs. Deciding n a suitable physical layut is therefre imprtant t ptimize the verall system cst. As is cntrlling the number f transceivers and small cmpnents, each f which typically adds cabling, pwer prvisining, installatin, dcumentatin, supprt and reliability csts. In all this, selecting an ptimum physical design is imprtant. This type f ptimizatin, cmmn in varius prfessinal engineering disciplines, is frmally knwn as a Mesh Relaxatin prblem think f a multiply-intercnnected netwrk f springs release the ndes and see where they end up. They cme t rest where the verall average spring length is shrtest, i.e. least extended (hence mst relaxed ). In ur case the springs represent the cables and the ndes are the equipment items. Fr example, if all the AV equipment items serve just ne rm then by this methd they all end up in the centre f the rm. Of curse, there are varius cnstraints that prevent the ndes frm mving t their perfect ptimal lcatins such as: prjectrs need t remain n the ceiling, and equipment needs t be in cnvenient yet ut-f-the-way lcatins. Belw are the varius requirements, cnstraints and ther cnsideratins that need t be balanced in making the right decisin: 4.1 Cnsideratins Requirements Requirements include: Cst ptimizatin The verall design must be cst-ptimized. Aesthetics There shall be n ugly expsed equipment racks in the rms. Instead the fllwing ptins are available: install equipment in credenza (meeting rms) r presentatin desk (teaching spaces); and/r install equipment in a c-lcated r nearby AV equipment rm. And fr very specific cases as set ut in the text: behind LCD display panels; n the underside f tables; and attached t (abve) vide prjectrs. But nt: within flr-bxes; within ceilings; within walls. Serviceability Includes: Easy access t all equipment. Easy access t frnt and rear f all racked equipment, withut intrducing OH&S hazards (e.g. where a small rack must be rlled fr rear access: the rlling space must be flat n slpe r step; max height 24RU; easy rlling with easy stpping/brake/lck). Where an audi mixer r prcessr (DSP) is lcated remtely, i.e. utside the rm: an audi service lp must be fitted frm the DSP t a suitable lcatin within the rm s that a technician in the rm can hear via headphnes relevant audi signals while tuning the remte DSP. In turn this means that the DSP must be remtely manageable via the Deakin Ethernet netwrk. Deakin eslutins Page 20 f 63 Versin:

Flexibility By using TP wiring wherever practicable, AV equipment in rms can be upgraded/refreshed ver time withut significant re-cabling Cnstraints Cnstraints include: Sme equipment types must be installed within the rm Refer list at Figure 1 belw. Sme signal types cannt run ver TP A key bjective is fr all ut-f-rm cabling t be standardized UTP: The cncept f centralized AV is predicated n the desirability f using standardized (lw-cst, structured) UTP cabling fr all (nn-pwer) fixture wiring thrughut the building and the cnsequent benefits f c-lcatin f AV equipment with ther electrnic systems, that als use this same cmmn UTP cable plant, in dedicated cntrlled spaces ( cmms rms ). This bjective is undermined by: sme AV signal types cannt be adapted t run ver TP: cases in pint include cabling between pwer amplifiers and speakers; between pwer amplifiers and hearing lps; RF cables between antennae and radi mic receivers; many AV suppliers recmmend the use f STP nt UTP, hence differentiating AV cables frm the cmmn structured UTP plant used by ther electrnic systems. Cable length limits Each transmissin technlgy has defined maximum lengths (refer Figure 11), beynd which transceivers must be used r equipment must be cnstrained t lie within. Heat dissipatin The slutin must prvide necessary air-flw / cling s that equipment remains within manufacturers specified temperature limits. Particular care is required fr Cisc cdecs s as nt t create a clsed-lp air-path in cnstrained spaces. Fr details refer t Nise islatin Nise frm the equipment and/r fans must remain within the acceptable limits set-ut in Sectin 8.9 f these Standards Other cnsideratins / bservatins Other cnsideratins and bservatins that impinge n the ptimizatin include: Heat and Nise Remval f AV equipment int a separate cntrlled envirnment external t the rm neatly addresses bth the heat and nise cnstraints (abve). Similarly the use f high-efficiency fanless digital pwer amplifiers can assist in all these regards: by retaining equipment in the rm, and hence addressing the speaker cabling requirement, while reducing nise and heat lad, and als imprving energy efficiency and envirnmental impact bjectives. Deakin eslutins Page 21 f 63 Versin:

Shrter cable runs are cheaper While being less at risk f interference (hence imprved reliability and cnsistency and reduced supprt csts) and als reducing the need fr expensive transceivers. Als imprves sustainability bjective thrugh reduced cnsumptin f cpper. Expensive cable vs transceivers The use f expensive cable (e.g. HDMI) must be balanced against the need fr expensive transceivers when using cheaper TP wiring. Cable installatin much cheaper at build-time than at retr-fit Therefre any rm that might need AV shuld be wired fr such at initial build-time. Additinal cable runs much cheaper at the same time Therefre additinal cables (at least N+1) shuld be run whenever cables are being installed (either at initial-build r during a retr-install). Re-use f AV TP cables fr ther purpses unlikely The prmise f re-use f AV TP cables fr different purpses later, r cnversely the re-use f ther TP cables fr future AV use, is unlikely t realise in practice due t the unusual lcatins and large quantities f cables required fr an AV system. Thus we shuld always expect t need t retr-fit fr-purpse cables whenever AV is added t an existing rm. Initial build vs Retr-fit Initial build prvides greater pprtunity fr achieving ptimum layut, and at lwer cst. When retr-fitting there are several cases: Majr refit where the interir is being gutted and cmpletely rebuilt, in which case the flexibility t deliver an ptimal utcme, and the cst-pint, is equivalent t that f new builds and hence equipment can g wherever it ptimally shuld. Minr refit where the designer has t live within the cnstraints f the existing building, which can lead t either: mre equipment needing t be installed within the rm than ideal; r equipment being installed further away in nearest available equipment rm (e.g. BDR); r equipment being lcated in less than ideal accmmdatin, e.g. small rms retr-added in r near the rms serviced. N Flr Distributin tier Due t the generally lw-prfile structure f mst Deakin buildings (small number f flrs), the Deakin netwrk architecture deliberately des nt have explicitly separate Building and Flr distributin tiers. This is a gd thing because it prevents prliferatin f large numbers f prly utilized Flr Distributin Rms that can result frm a frmal FDR/BDR tiered structure, which is mre suitable fr high-rise buildings. Hence the Deakin netwrk architecture defines nly a Building Distributin Rm (BDR), and hence many flrs f many buildings d nt have a cmms rm n their wn flr and are instead serviced frm a BDR n anther flr. At Deakin, where there is a need fr mre than ne BDR in a building, either due t the building s breadth, r its height, additinal BDRs are prvisined, nt a Flr Distributin Rm (FDR) dwnstream f the BDR. Hence, in general at Deakin the lcal BDR is further away frm the areas serviced at (e.g. n anther flr) than fr rganizatins that have FDRs n every flr f every building. Audi DSP/mixer Due t the large number f audi surces and sinks within the rm, and the issues f speaker and RF cabling (refer Cnstraint #2 in previus sectin abve) there is in turn an ptimizing mtivatin fr the audi DSP t als be within r near the rm serviced. Otherwise, where the DSP is remte, there becmes a need fr either a large number f audi-ver-tp transceivers, r Deakin eslutins Page 22 f 63 Versin:

equivalently multi-channel audi multiplexer between rm and remte DSP. Als, as stated at Requirement #2 abve, where the DSP is remte an audi service lp must be prvisined back int the rm fr technician use when cmmissining r subsequently tuning the DSP. AV-quality pwer Given that sme AV cmpnents must be within the rm (prjectrs, etc. refer Cnstraint #1 abve and Figure 1), in turn these require AV-quality pwer (Sectin 8.1) t be reticulated int the rm. Thus with AV-quality pwer necessarily in the rm, this makes it easy (lw cst) t extend AV-quality pwer t any/all ther AV items that the ptimizatin elects t place in the rm. Taken tgether these requirements, cnstraints and cnsideratins lead t the general cnclusin that AV cmpnents shuld ptimally be lcated within r in clse prximity t the rm/s serviced, and generally clser t the rm than the lcatin f the nearest Building Distributin Rm. 4.2 Cases Firstly, there are varius unambiguus cases: Simple stand-alne rms All AV1-AV5 spaces: The amunt f AV equipment is small and can easily and ptimally always be all lcated within the rm, either: behind an LCD panel r in credenza r presentatin desk. Sme AV6-AV8 spaces: Where larger amunts f AV equipment are required t be lcated in the rm, this can smetimes be accmmdated within the larger (2 rack) standard presentatin desk. Splittable/jinable spaces Where a pair (r mre) f spaces can be split r cmbined, they must all be perated frm a single integrated AV and Cntrl system, which can be lcated in ne f the rms r c-lcated in a single lcatin nearby. Clusters Similarly clusters f AV spaces can easily be serviced frm a single cmmn c-lcated AV equipment rm. Hence building design shuld give strng cnsideratin t clustering AV spaces. There are als sme less-clear-cut cases: Larger AV6-AV8 spaces In circumstances where all the equipment cannt easily fit within the rm, in which case a nearby equipment rm needs t be used r prvisined. Retr-fits In circumstances where there is n nearby equipment rm, and hence either ne needs t be prvisined, r alternatively a further away BDR might need t be used, r mre equipment than ideal may need t be lcated within the rm itself.
